Moving Butler would be ridiculous.

He wants 10 mil per...he isn't a top 10 in my mind and you can't pay 2 CB's 10 million.

Personally I think Malcolm is deserving of 10m AAV but thats not the way the NEP operate. They only break the bank for 1 player in a unit.

BB did not get rid of him. He negotiated on a contract based on Butler currently being under contract. Seems Butler and his agent are forcing the issue. They risked having their leverage eliminate and that happened. BB was only protecting his interests.

that's a large, presumptive if

They were negotiating. BB, based on the actual contract situation [rfa], butler, apparently wanted to rip up that year. Butler forced the issue.

Which is why they're currently doing it for TWO players in the unit. 3 if you want to make the defense the unit as opposed to the defensive backfield.

I mean the corps. CB, Safety, OL, LB, DT

I don't thinks it's a rule btw, they're getting ready to do that at QB soon...
Its a philosophy.

The only exception when BB has paid players who play the same position was when he doled out big contracts to Gronk and AH.

Ok so there is no rule then. If the players are worth they're worth it.

Again its not a hard and fast rule but it is very, very rare for BB or any NFL team to pay top dollar to two players who play the same position.

I'd argue Gronk and AH played different positions but thats splitting hairs.

Of couse he did. defoe cant stand the way this team does biz. This was his post below in another thread.

It's so demoralizing following this team. It feels like watching The Walking Dead (which I quit at the beginning of season 7- don't miss it) There is absolutely no point in getting attached to any of the characters because it's inevitable that they will meet an untimely demise. Kind of like Pats players. At what point does this affect player morale and loyalty. The Pats must have a well earned reputation round the league. I'm surprised we are able to attract any free agents at this point.

Don't be shocked when Bill resigns Garopollo and trades Brady next offseason for a second or third round pick. He is stone cold and this organization is obsessed with long term contention rather than short term greatness.
Wow

Seattle pays Earl Thomas and Cam Chancellor. Denver paid/pays Miller/Ware Talib/Harris. And those are championship teams. Not paying 2 great players just because they play the same position is a foolish philosophy if it indeed exists.

Thank you. So glad someone is finally saying this

I hear you but take a look at how Bill has paid the players since 2000.

With the exception of AH and Gronk he has not paid top dollar to players who play the same position.

I agree that it's likely, but I don't think it's 100%.
I disagree that it is likely.

I happen to think that one low first is nowhere close to appropriate compensation for the player Butler is. A top 10, maybe top 5 cornerback does not come cheaply. Butler is good, young and a champ, and all of those things make him far more valuable than a single lottery ticket.

I have to think that Belichick is not going to be cheated here and is going to hold onto Butler, putting the ball in his court about whether or not he decides to sulk about it
