I have a problem with the OP speaking in absolutes when all we know is what we don't know (if that makes sense).

And even if what the OP think will happen happens, things don't happen willy nilly with this FO. There is ALWAYS a reason for everything. We may not find out immediately, and it may not be to our satisfaction, but there is always a reason. I'm not going to bash something that hasn't happened yet.

I can understand why they wouldn't want to give Ryan a huge deal. He had one good year out of four. There is definite risk there. Paying Allen 18.3 instead of 21 to Bennett and giving up a draft pick was stupid, but I can live with it. I can even live with letting Blount walk (if that's the case) and handcuffing Brady with no running game. I'm numb to it by now.

What I cannot accept is throwing Butler away when there is absolutely no good reason to do so. If Bill deals him away, to me, it takes the wind out of the sails of what has otherwise been an excellent offseason so far. There is no excuse for getting rid of a very good corner and handicapping what could be a dominant defense next year for the 32nd pick in the draft. We have a chance to field the most complete Pats team ever. And instead we are going to throw Eric Rowe, Cyrus Jones or some other awful player out there so we can move up 30 or 40 spots in the draft? That's crazy.

Make him play for the 4 million and then let him walk next year if you don't want to pay him. There is certainly no reason you can't pay big money to two CBs. But if they don't, they still get a 3rd round compensatory pick. Giving up a year of dominating secondary play is not worth moving form the 3rd round to the very bottom of the first. I just don't understand the thinking here. Talk about overvaluing draft position. Their last two first rounders were Dominique Easly and Malcolm Brown. You can't get a guy of that caliber in round three?

The problem with losing Butler is Pats already lost Ryan, who was a very solid cb last year. Gilmore/ Butler is a wash. I think Rowe can be decent #2. But now big ? mark at the #3.

Fortunately, the Pats are strong enough that they'll still be the best team in the league. But damn, with Butler/Gilmore/Rowe plus Dmac/ Chung/Harmon- that's the best secondary in the NFL. This would be maybe the scariest team I've ever seen.

I agree with most of the post (not really the bottom part), it's one thing to say we don't want to re-sign him and pay him 10+ this season but to say no to paying him 3.9 this year (remember we only traded Chandler Jones in his pricey option year, we didn't trade him within the four cheap years)? C'mon son. Plus he'll be playing as hard as he can in a contract year. If we don't win the SB and lose him for nothing, so be it. I'll take that risk. This team is loaded and the AFC is trash. We have a very very very very good shot at a repeat and a second dynasty with another 3 in 4.

Yes, this thread is kinda jumping the gun here. IMO odds are he stays and plays hard for that big money UFA contract while still making 3.9mil which for him is not chump change.

It's hard to say what's really going on but to me it sounds like the Butler camp doesn't really understand that the RFA year isn't your UFA year.

I don't know how you can evaluate a trade that hasn't happened.

Multiply that times ten for a hypothetical trade without knowing what the team receives in return.

Same holds true for a evaluating an extension (hypothetical or real) without knowledge of the terms of that contract.



(To be fair, far too many sports writers and 'analysts' are also guilty of this practice, praising a signing or condemning a team for permitting a free agent to walk - and never once bringing into discussion whether or not the contract signified a good or poor value. Salary cap evaluation does not lend itself well to five second sound bites.)

It's so demoralizing following this team. It feels like watching The Walking Dead (which I quit at the beginning of season 7- don't miss it) There is absolutely no point in getting attached to any of the characters because it's inevitable that they will meet an untimely demise. Kind of like Pats players. At what point does this affect player morale and loyalty. The Pats must have a well earned reputation round the league. I'm surprised we are able to attract any free agents at this point.

Don't be shocked when Bill resigns Garopollo and trades Brady next offseason for a second or third round pick. He is stone cold and this organization is obsessed with long term contention rather than short term greatness.
