Thank You Amendola

As with any WR, Cooks has yet to prove he can be on the same page as Brady. I like the signing, but assuming Dola will get cut is premature IMO.

Have you considered expressing opinions and predictions as things you believe are probable instead of using such an authoritative tone? Such an approach will likely lead to more congenial responses and less negative ratings thrown back and forth.

Also, throwing a dislike @karguy85 seems a little harsh. He was adding some much needed levity to the thread.
Appreciate the support! Some people can't take a lighthearted joke unfortunately. I thought it was funny, and apparently a bunch of others did as well. That's all that matters.

With the addition of Cooks, I can't see how the Pats keep Amendola at all. They have Edelman, Cooks, Mitchell, and Hogan ahead of him. Not to mention Gronkowski, Allen, White, and Lewis.

I can't see the Pats keeping Amendola when they can free up 6.4M by cutting him outright..

And yes.. I don't care for this deal because I feel the Pats gave up too much and I feel that having Cooks will cut into Mitchell's development since they have Hogan as well.
Cooks deal is totally awesome

Cooks and Hogan are both insurance policies for Edelman.

It would be awesome if Danny agrees with you. That's the rub. We'll see.

Chris
Any reason to think that Amendola wouldn't agree to the same deal as last year, or something quite similar? If so, we get a helluva "WR5"/possession receiver/Edelman backup/special teams player who is very familiar with our system.

It's definitely crowded at WR and it would be tough to see Danny go.

He has been the IDEAL 5th wide receiver.

1.) Brady trusts him.

2.) He makes clutch catches in the limited chances he gets.

3.) He knows and has accepted his reduced role (ie, not a young guy looking for more).

4.) Continues to take pay cuts to stay with the team.

5.) Plays big in big games.

I love the DA support group here. Clearly this group, along with the "Tag and keep JG in 2018", believe Belichick has entered a bizarro universe where $$$ is no longer a limitation. (except for Butler)
Soon to be #5 WR..........the 2016 #4 WR managed 23 catches (1.5/game) in the 2016 regular season.....Lets keep him at full salary, or knock a few hundred grand off (my personal favorite) because only DA makes the playoff catches?
I'm guessing the same faction believes Gronk is underpaid and deserves a bump in salary despite the slight inconvenience of rarely seeing the end of the season.....why not.....Bizarro BB is just givin it away.
What makes a 1.5m dollar salary so prohibitive, specifically for a guy who knows and produces in the system when needed? And in multiple roles, no less.

No one is suggesting keeping him at his current salary. No one. I haven't seen one person. But why wouldn't they want to keep him with such a cheap deal? Sure, he only caught 23 balls, but he's huge in the postseason, and those numbers would've doubled or tripled with an injury situation.

I don't know what makes Danny tick. I'm sure every player has their own take on getting paid vs. playing for a winner, with their idea of where the equilibrium exists. Does two titles shift things more towards the money at this point? We'll find out.

I don't understand. Many teams, including the Patriots most years, carry five wide receivers. I am not sure why their tight ends and running backs would have anything to do with Amendola.

I have a feeling the poster was looking at how the Pats entered the 2016 season with only four true wide receivers (Slater doesn't count). They entered the year with Edelman/Hogan/Mitchell/Amendola. The speculation is that the Pats can afford to do this because they have a surplus of pass catchers at other positions (TE and RB) that could make up for the lack of a 5th wide receiver. As such, BB probably felt a 5th wide receiver to be less valuable than maintain a spot at another position.

That, of course, is not to say that he'll do this again in 2017. But let's keep in mind he did do this in 2012 as well. IN 2012 we had the most WR competition that we've ever seen with the following receivers having been on the team at some point in the offseason with........Brandon Lloyd, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth, Julian Edelman, Deion Branch, Chad Ochocinco, and Anthony Gonzalez. It seemed like 5 wide receivers was a lock that year but they went with only 4.

So I too, hope they stick with 5 WR, but I wouldn't be shocked if they do only go with 4 (and that would be bad news for Amendola).

Think of the matchup problems McDaniels can create against ANY secondary if he puts Brady in the shotgun with Cooks, Edelman, Hogan, Amendola and Mitchell running downfield at the same time. What secondary in the NFL can match up with that? And that's with Gronk, Allen, White and Lewis catching their breath on the sidelines.

For most teams, the idea of keeping Amendola as a 5th WR would be an unaffordable luxury. But BB is not typical, and he's proven he'd rather devote his cap space and cash on his 52nd and 53rd player than splurging on his top 10.

Roster-building with an eye to the certainty of injuries.

Rather than something to be avoided, I think that we're approaching BB's ideal roster situation at WR. Five affordable, proven, quality players deep at WR that fit the system. All guys that inspire confidence. Each one has starter-caliber talent.

Danny's on record that he'll take a reduction to stay with the team, Belichick trusts and respects him. As mentioned, he contributes on ST, and he makes plays in big games. There's cap space made available for just this type of situation. So unless Danny wants more money than fair value for his contributions, I don't see the problem.

Maybe they can restructure Dola and keep him over J. Richards.

And Amendola probably will need to restructure in order to stay

No one is paying him big money.
