Unless the Patriots have other assets to trade, the Cooks deal has sealed Garoppolo's fate

This argument is based on a false premise. Whether you draft a player with a pick, or trade that pick for a player, you are still getting a player. I don't think Belichick is thinking that players must come from trades or must come from the draft. Plus, established players are probably worth more than the crapshoot the draft really is.

Why must the Patriots trade players for more draft picks if they use that draft capital to get players in other ways (i.e. trade)?

Absolutely agree with this. And in fact if you get the right players, young, they're still relatively cheap and have proved they can play in the NFL like Brandin Cooks. They drafted Brandin Cooks with their first round pick, basically, and I doubt any rookie was going to contribute more than Cooks is probably going to.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm saying that this is BB. When you look at what's been done, one could make the argument that BB is laying the foundation for trading Brady, not JAG.

Bottom line: We can guess, but he throws enough curve balls that guessing is all it will be.
Oh no... so the Browns could be stocking up so heavily... for Brady........ and Schefter has been so adamant that "Jimmy won't be traded"... because it's not JIMMY being traded...

Ugh I'm gonna be sick. Thanks a lot!

The thing with draft picks is we will have to cut players to make room on the 53 for them. That's hard to do with a good team with good players and we aren't an old team either. Plus we have a lot of cap room so we can spend a little for once. Hope Bulter stays and somehow sign HT. Even with that we still have some money to spend to try to get even better. We also do well on later round picks anyways.

With the acquisition of Cooks from the Saints, the Patriots have (at this time) no draft capital in the first two rounds.

The Pats don't pick til 72 in 3rd round and have just 2 picks in first 117 selections.

Meanwhile, the Browns have EIGHT picks within the first two rounds between this year and next year

And with the surplus of draft picks the Browns have, this basically means Jimmy G. is as good as gone.....and honestly I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Nope this move is made FOR Jimmy. Well Jimmy and Josh, times are changing and the ball is going down field a little.

I don't know if this was posted somewhere else already - but it fits here for those who didn't catch it and would like to know the reasoning (and sources) behind two all-important firm beliefs Reiss and Schefter share:

Garoppolo will not be traded.
Hightower will re-sign.

OMF - Mike Reiss talks about the disconnect between the Patriots and Malcolm Butler, 3-10-17

BTW: Pats still have huge cap space - 40M (not accounted Branch & Williams offset by Dola) so they can add whatever they need mid-term in FA instead of Draft.

Also note that what they lost in trades so far is one pick - #32. All others are just moves down, some barely significant.

And they already have a team that (incl. High&Jimmy) looks better than SBLI team (on paper). Well, maybe one DE away but pretty much there.

Keeping Jimmy, getting younger, adding on mid-term quality, having healthy cap .. is far from all-in. They saw opportunities to get better this year and they took them.

Jimmy won't be traded, if Brady gets hurt then all these moves will be a waste meaning we would be a Brady injury away from having a tanked season no way in hell is BB is doing all this with JB in mind as taking over if Brady gets hurt, with JG we still have high chance to win a SB with the '17 roster
So if he was trading JG he just wouldn't bother making moves to improve the team?

Agree. It seems more likely Belichick is loading up to capitalize on Brady's final years. IMO, this is a win-now move by the Patriots

Cooks will be going into next season as a 23 year old. We basically used the 32nd pick on Brandin Cooks who has proven to be a capable NFL player.

Agree with others that the recent moves strengthen keeping Jimmy G

We are looking to have one of our strongest teams on paper and having a backup QB that can win the SB is an important person on the 53. Bill was on the staff of the Giants when they won with Hostetler.

We still have 7 picks in the draft

edit: then again Cleveland does have the picks in 2! drafts to make a Godfather offer. Love their analytics.

If they keep jimmy than idk how you keep him aftter next season. The QB class next season will be very good. His value won't be as high. Idk. Very risky unless he will be our future QB after brady retires

That's if JG can last more than two games without getting injured lol.

To me JG doesn't strike me as a tough guy, sure he is smart, sure he can throw the ball, just his durability is questionable.

Yea only concern really, but that's probably been worked on or been getting worked on if thats the planned heir

As a point of reference, the pats did not get much out of the 1st 2 rounds last year
pretty much. We pretty much traded a bunch of lottery tickets for gold bullion. Who does that and then turns around and says "the problem here is that we clearly do not have enough lottery tickets?"

If the draft is so full of talent then maybe you can get a nice player later and don't need a first round pick.

Yup. That's the advantage of a deep draft. The value comes later.

I'm a draft guy as most of you know so I love me lots of draft picks and I get the shakes when thinking of the potential draft haul we might get from a Jimmy G trade. But to be honest, in this instance and assuming we re-sign Hightower, I'm very comfortable with keeping Butler and JG and riding this team to another SB. I mean, even if Brady gets injured week one (everything crossed against this happening), Jimmy could take this team to the SB it's that stacked.
