Butler For Cooks Deal Being Hashed Out Between NE-NO

I'll be wicked pissed if we lose Butler over a few dollars.

I am guessing the Pats are tired of dealing with an inexperienced agent/lawyer and want to move on.

Like I said in another thread, it speaks volumes the Belichick hashed out a huge deal for Gilmore with Jason Chayut (was Deion Branch's agent in '06) within probably an hour or 2. Yet supposedly hasn't spoken to Butler's agent in awhile.

So what are the titans offering? They offered number 18 and the saints turned that down. I think the saints are asking for alot.

Mccourty could be offered by Titans and who knows who or what else

I think McCourty and number 18 would be alot. I think butler for cooks straight up's a good deal unless the saints think butler's not a good corner which is asinine

Totally agree with Howe.

What did Lombardi say about Butler? I went back through his twitter feed and couldn't find anything.

Never mind I found it:

Why They Did It
Stephon Gilmore, CB, New England Patriots (five years, $65 million)

Getting huge contracts done with talented players is always difficult, right? It’s even harder for an undrafted player who never received a modest signing bonus as a college free agent. The Patriots kept trying to sign Malcolm Butler to a long-term extension and kept coming up empty?—?the underpaid hero of Super Bowl XLIX is looking for the moon and then some. Who could blame him? The Patriots’ model during the Belichick years, though: If you cannot get a deal with one key guy, find another. That’s Gilmore. They finally heard the word YES from a young defensive starter (26 years old) who fits their defense well and ensures they still have a top-10 corner. Bill Belichick isn’t Stephen Stills?—?he doesn’t believe you “love the one you’re with,” he believes you love the one who will say yes.

Could be a longer time until all of this is resolved. Even if the trade gets agreed upon Butler still needs to negotiate something with the Saints.

Not saying it will take long but it has the potential..

Butler's agent rebuffed the "looking for the moon and then some" Lombardi statement....but.....nothing Lombardi said disparages Butler as a player or teammate.
The reality.....Butler's agent did ask for the moon. He wanted NE to give up their RFA rights ....and NE does not give away that which they don't have to.
Howe is sounding a bit melodramatic on this one.
And Lombardi has just offered a clinical explanation of how most teams approach contract season

Another reason Pats might be miffed/impatient with Butler.

NE will need to keep upwards of 20M or so unspent against the cap just in case someone makes an offer for Butler and they have to match salary or guaranteed monies.

So obviously they want a quick deal or a quick agreement to sign the RFA offer sheet. ASAP.

It has more to do with cost certainty and unspent capital than anything else. In fact this might be the only leverage Butler and agent have.

Maybe they are using it?

Although NE can always deem it's no big deal, and roll the savings into next season. Still, they can't be happy having their hands tied on the matter.

It's so demoralizing following this team. It feels like watching The Walking Dead (which I quit at the beginning of season 7- don't miss it) There is absolutely no point in getting attached to any of the characters because it's inevitable that they will meet an untimely demise. Kind of like Pats players. At what point does this affect player morale and loyalty. The Pats must have a well earned reputation round the league. I'm surprised we are able to attract any free agents at this point.

Don't be shocked when Bill resigns Garopollo and trades Brady next offseason for a second or third round pick. He is stone cold and this organization is obsessed with long term contention rather than short term greatness.

Oh woe is you. I'm so sorry meanie Belichick keeps trading away your binkies. The absolute horror you must endure following a team that's won 5 Super Bowls in 16 years and goes to the playoffs every year.

Perhaps you'd prefer a team that overpays players, keeps them past their prime and battles for the 1st overall pick every year.

Gang Green is that way ----->

What a disgrace. You don't deserve this team.

I'm thinking this agent isn't doing Butler any favors. Not because he is trying to get him paid, but because he seems to be making 2 mistakes:

1. Not understanding how the CBA works, and asking for something no team would ever do because of the precedent it would set (treat an RFA as a UFA)

2. Overestimating his clients's market value and advising based upon that false assumption. If Butler were worth what the agent seems to think he is, other teams would be signing him to an offer sheet despite the #1 pick cost. Why? Because if Butler is truly a top 5-10 CB talent in the eyes of the 31, then a big contract AND a 1st round pick is a no-brainer especially for a bottom of the round team. Now if we see it happen then the agent was correct but so far it hasn't. Reminds me of the Welker situation from 2013 in a way where the agent misjudged the market badly.

Which is why they signed Gilmore and are ready to move on from Butler.

I think that's what happened in the Deion Branch situation. He wanted them to rip up his last year of RFA and get a new deal. BB said we pay you your last year of RFA and add on years. He just won't do it.
