Martellus Bennett Says Goodbye

When Gronk went down his play saved this teams bacon.

If Gronk is healthy he won't be missed.

If Gronk is not he will.

Don't let fans let you believe Allen > Marty

I really like Bennett and thought he was an important part of their Lombardi, and going into the season I thought I would want them to re-sign him, however the combination of his contract demands and his diminishing athleticism made me think they needed to go younger at the position. I thought it was going to be the draft, and it still could be a position they add in the draft, but this move made that s luxury instead of a need, and that's where you always want to be. Allen has had problems staying healthy and was underperforming in Indy but this trade was a steal, as they only drop down about 45 spots and his deal is really team friendly. While Bennett was the better player I won't be surprised if Allen is better over the next three seasons.

I think it's a good deal as well. At $7.4m it's probable he won't see the last year of his deal here and if he's a great fit they'll redo it. He's got to be durable and that has been a challenge for him in Indy.

Not sure I agree Martys athleticism was diminishing due to age but rather it was attributed to injury. He is 30 so who knows. Seems reasonable to think for sure.

I still think they are drafting a TE reasonably early in the draft.

Think his stay was over rated

Sure as **** not worth 10 mil a year

Overrated stay? A run blocking, pass blocking, TE with good hands that actually played through injury. #87 excels at the first 3, but not the last one. Look at his 1 game healthy with TB12 behind center (Cleveland). Thanks Marty!

Marty played through the pain barrier and helped us get a ring. One suspects that he would have done even better if he had two feet, but he was effective enough catching, blocked well, and teams ALWAYS had to account for him. Without him, we don't win the SB.

Thanks, and good luck. We are onto Allen.

If he plays well 7.4 will be a good deal in 2019, we will just have to see how healthy and productive he can be. Whether or not they spend a high pick in the draft atcTE will depend upon the rest of their free agency as well as who is on the board at those picks. Overall I think their draft will be about defense.

Well he played when he was Hurt, was a good solder accepted the roles given him by the coach. Getting his last BIG contract, grats Marty.

I NEVER get bothered when players cash in short carer, limited time to make the money and set their families up.
Don't understand fans who don't get this.

Plus he is gonna fetch us a 3rd or 4th rd pick.

I don't get bothered when we play rent-a-player and they leave, but I don't necessarily feel that I should like them either, even if they were good soldiers like Bennett. They left. He's much better than Revis though.

Sad to see him go, first we lose Evan Turner now Marty. Sucks to see great personalities leave Boston.

I'm going to miss one of those rare football players with an ironic sense of humor. ...

I don't think the Patriots would have won without him. So, Thanks, Marty!

Great work with the community, children's book author, animation studios, hilarious interviews with his brother...You don't get too many football players like Marty...

What a fun ride. Marty was a blast to watch this year on and off the field. Thanks for your part on 5!

Loved having this guy this year, quintessential example of a mutualistic relationship. Really glad he got to win a ring, I don't think we win one without him...Hope he gets a huge pay day somewhere in the NFC, he deserves it. Him dancing with the cheerleaders was top 5 moment of the season for me...

Marty was/is a great personality. A good fb player and very unselfish team/goal oriented. ...IMO It is a shame the team needs and his came to a fork in road, but wish him all the best. He's a good guy (and more imp, good father / role model from all what could be seen).

Agreed. He came here and signed a one year 'prove it' deal. He 'proved it'. Now he sees that there's a big market for his services and it's time for him to cash in, which has been the plan all along. If that wasn't the plan, he would have taken the Pats offer of an extension. That's just how the NFL works.

We all know BB doesn't like to set the market. The odds of him doing it for MB were pretty low, given how many years he's been in the league already.

On a personal level, it's a shame seeing him go, but on an intellectual level, it was totally expected.

Bennett didn't sign a prove it deal, he was acquired in a trade

I agree. I think it'll be mostly about defense as well but if there is a promising player that represents the "best value" at WR, RB or even o-line they won't hesitate to draft him (or they might trade the pick entirely)

I agree, as fans we place much more emphasis upon needs than they do as a staff. They definitely take needs into account but they won't pass on a player they see as clearly superior.

Exactly. Its how BB operates. With the exception of injuries decimating a position (see RB or OT) he is never in a position of desperation to fill a position in the draft.

Its why you see him signing/trading for quality players/vets leading up to the draft. That way the rookie has time to learn and be mentored and not thrust into a critical role if he is not ready.

He's going to regret not taking the Patriots' $7 million offer.

Hope he gets a monstrous ovation from we faithful "Mass-holes" should he return to Gillette with another team. To echo what someone else said, this is how you part ways. Great sense of humor, and on good terms. Thanks for #5 Mah-ty. I hope you get paid.
