Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

I want a tight end that could give you at least 700 yards receiving. Idk how gronk will play. I am hoping he's the same gronk. Still hope we draft an athletic tight end.

Please understand this. The Pats do everything they can to fill out the 2-deep prior to the draft so they don't have to draft based on need. That way he can draft the BP'sA in each round.

In part that's because the draft is a cr*p shoot. One of the "stud tight ends" you speak of have a small chance to produce to the level of a #2 tight end. The Pats don't want to leave a hole in the roster by taking the huge risk of filling it only with a college player.

We will see them methodically acquire players to replace the FA's that are leaving. Probably none of those players will be exciting names. All of them will be able to play reasonably well if called upon. Remember, the Pats value dependability over athleticism.

This fact has been posted on the Board more times than can be counted.

So what you hope happens next? It's a done deal. I will hope he works out for us. Maybe he can resurrect his career here.

Just a guess. O line improved last year and will improve this year. Maybe get a bigger center (Mangold?). Reportedly the draft is RB deep. Get Blount (or better) signed/drafted and you will be looking at one ball busting offense.

He's been pretty average... Colts fans for the last 2 years have basically wished that they never extended him and kept Fleener instead.. they were very worried about losing Doyle because they already gave him a big contract..

I'm nervous about this trade, I guess it will depend on what was given up... because he already has a pretty big contract...

For us to take Colts fans word for anything is crazy since they think the last 2 years were justified (and some think it should have been WORSE!)

Forgive me if I bypass Colts fans' knowledge about anything.

I hope we don't get 700 yards out of our TE2, because that probably means Gronk is hurt again. But if he is hurt, and Allen is thrust into the TE2 role, I'm pretty sure he could get 700 yards. The only reason he hasn't done it multiple times already is because he and Fleener were teammates for four years.

He's not solid. He's mediocre which is why Indy is getting rid of him.

Not sure why you're getting so many laughs, Allen has been the definition of mediocre and has underperformed his contract to date with the Colts..

I really hope that's because they've been misusing him.. but even homer Colts fans have been harping on this guy for YEARS...

Just seems like way too much money for him, but who knows... The Colts are a dumpster fire, so hopefully we can utilize him to his strengths and have him earn that contract

Colts have been a dumpster fire. Allen may find some energy here in NE, or get cut.

Just saw something that Dwayne Allen is in the top 5 since 2012 in converting red zone targets to touchdowns. I'm sure that's been shared here already. I like Allen. Good enough to be atleast what Tim wright was for us. I don't think he will be as good as Bennett though

The contract that the Colts signed him to was bad, but we're not inheriting that contract. The guaranteed money--which they gave him too much of--stays on the Colts' cap because they already paid it out. What's left--what we did inherit--is actually a good deal for a solid TE.

I agree with the Daniel Graham comp that scott99 and patfanken mentioned. I think Graham is his floor because we don't know what the "Brady effect" will do to his receiving stats.

Having Graham 2.0 as your *second* TE is a great situation however you want to slice it. We just got spoiled because having Bennett as the 2nd TE was an insane luxury.

Regards,
Chris

The Colts offense wasn't even that bad it was actually putting up similar numbers to the Patriots offense, Allen was just outplayed by Doyle.

I don't hate giving up a 4th but i'm just not a big fan of the player, hope he proves me wrong.

The biggest concern for me is Luck is a guy who puts up big numbers offensively and his receivers get nice stats and both Fleener in the past and Doyle last year have had decent years but Allen didn't work at all.

It'd almost be better if he was coming from a game manager type offense and you could expect a massive jump in targets but the Colts throw it as much as anyone.

This is an example of how Colts fans feel about him:

He thinks visiting Children's Hospitals is a BAD THING!

I'll be glad to welcome any player who gives his time to get in line at Children's Hospital.

Not even sure what he's trying to say there. They'll grudgingly allow you to be a good human being, but only if you're a really good football player and promise to never get hurt?

They have us now at 48 million of cap space. No news on hightower

Sure but they have more coming likely. One way or another they will save 5M-6M from Amendola, Also a few other very reasonable cuts they can make.

Freeny/McClellin make sense.

Don't care much for the opinion of a welcher...

And just like that, Greg Scruggs will disappear in a puff of magic, in much the same way he arrived, and no one will ever truly know if he really existed, or was just a figment of someone's imagination, made up to scare misbehaving children.

Since the two of us were so touched by his mysterious presence .. Id say Pats owe it to us to at least meet with the guy..

(his story here might not be over though)

Didnt chicago fans basically say similar stuff about bennett on his way out? Often injured, only had one really good year and rest ok

Unless you would rather have bennett for 9million $ and allen is basically a younger bennett

I trust bill

Was expecting a lot more from Bennett, seemed always to be going in half speed, didn't have great hands for me .
Allen, I don't know, but you know in BB we trust . Have a feeling that he will at least work harder, maybe even train a bit with TFB in the offseason

Allen: 57 games, 126 catches (2.2 per game) on 199 targets 63%, 11.5 yds per reception, 3 fumbles (0 lost)
Bennett: 135 games, 403 catches (2.9 per game) on 600 targets 67%, 10.6 yds per reception, 4 fumbles (1 lost)

By all accounts Allen is a better blocker. So anyone think that difference in production is worth a couple million in cap space?
