Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

He's nowhere near as good a receiver as Bennett.

He's a very similar TE. Very good blocker who can also get open and make plays in the passing game, especially in the red zone. I don't expect his receiving numbers to match Bennett's, especially if Gronk is healthy, but this is a very solid signing.

You wanna make a bet this guy doesn't even come close to what an injured bennett did production wise. I know bennett wasn't coming back. Why not just draft a tight end.

Almost no rookie TEs know the first thing about blocking at the NFL level. It takes years to learn. You can get them ready to run and catch right away, but not ready to block unless they are converted O-linemen or elite 1st/2nd round prospects.

This a very good move, I don't see what there isn't to like. It shores up the position with the departure of Bennett. We'll have him at a solid price for at least two years.

One of the things we really liked about Marty was his blocking, something we will continue to have with Dwayne Allen. He can also be decently productive receiver and potentially a strong red zone option.

My only concern is that both he and Gronk are injury prone guys. It's a significant if but if they can remain healthy we may well be set for the next few seasons at the position. Meaning we will be going into next season with largely the same offense, probably upgraded at RB (dreaming of McCaffrey).

Allows us to focus our efforts largely on defense in the draft, where we have a lot of FA's.

Some comments on the comments:

1. Good to see Adam Schecter be right on the money again. Getting harder to believe a guy who is continually getting it wrong thinking the Colts were getting 2 picks. Maybe he should do a better job of fact checking his "sources".

2. Make no mistake, Allen is not close to being the kind of receiver Bennett is, though he will probably end up being about 60% of the cost, since Marty will likely get $7-9MM/yr. Marty is much bigger a target with a wider catch radius. That being said, Allen is supposedly a better blocker (which is saying something) and a decent receiver. Think of him as being a great upgrade over Chandler, and a small down grade over Bennett.

3. Essentially we moved down 62 spots to get Allen. At that area of the draft, keeping that 8th pick was important. It's all a crap shoot down there anywy, so the more bullets you have the better.

4. At $5MM with very little guarranteed money, we probably are getting what we payed for, a decent starting TE. I think the Daniel Graham comparisons are pretty good.

5. I think Allen will work out much better as the #2 TE than he would be as the #1. He will be more comfortable and he won't be under any pressure to give us more offense than he's used to give. 30-50 catches, around 500 yds and 5 TD's would be a productive season

6. Evidently they heard enough around the league to realize that Marty would be offered more than what they were willing to pay him, so they pulled the trigger. If he ends up being signed for 2 years and $14MM I WILL be disappointed. I also wonder if they could have put this trade off until next week so they could actually see what the market for TE's would be.

7. Bennett was a "decent" and willing blocker. Supposedly Allen is one of the league's best both in protection and run. Since we already have THE best blocking TE on the roster, the run game has a good chance to improve next season.

8. Now that we have 2 excellent blocking TE's plus Flemming, I would be much more open to drafting a so called move TE, or picking one up in FA. OR it could be a great opportunity for Housler.

9. I really wanted Bennett back, but if it was not to be, this is a pretty good deal. Kudos to BB for not grabbing the FA with great receiving stats and going after the solid but not flashy guy who will "do his job".

Awful trade. Allen makes a bunch of money and be borderline sucks.

He's nowhere near as good a receiver as Bennett.

This has to be shtick at this point, right? Guy averaged 11.6 yards a catch and looks to get even more opportunities in this offense considering how much 22 personnel they like to run when Gronk is playing. And all they gave up was a 4th to do it. The trade is fine and addresses a need.

This addresses one of our top needs. Kind of surprised we pulled off a deal with the Colts, but oh well, I think he can help us.

Why surprised they traded with the Colts? All the beef was with Grigson, now that he's gone the Colts are just another team to the Patriots front office.

So Bennett 'free' 1 year rental and Allen, swapping 2 4th Rd picks for 2 Sixth's Rd picks and a likely 3rd or 4th comp pick, Jeez talk about value. BB playing chess while other play fanboy GM's.

Please explain how this trade is a big gamble since you disagreed with me saying it was not a gamble.

Did you quote the right post?

I didn't say it was a big gamble.

I like the trade.

Where I'm really excited about Gronk and Allen as a tandem is the running game. Those guys + Develin + the emerging young interior OL = great googly moogly.

This is what Pimp is missing.

And I wish I could winner your post more than once.

Patriots now have the following selections in the upcoming Draft:
Round 1: #32
Round 2: #64
Round 3: #96
Round 3: #103
Round 5: #163
Round 5: #183
Round 6: #200
Round 7: #239

Hoping we will have additional picks if jimmy"s traded. This team need's another pass rusher and a corner.

I wonder if it's the Seattle pick or #32? The way I read the punishment. Is that the Pats couldn't trade #32 AND if they acquired a pick earlier in the round that one would be forefited. So I'm guessing they are trading the Seattle pick and losing pick #32

Post 171 in the thread You must not have sensed the sarcasm there.

I believe that in 17 years under BB we have NEVER traded with the Colts. I might be wrong, but that's my recollection. Of course that would be the time with Polian & Grigson as their GM, two donkey's asses to deal with.

I'm not the biggest Allen fan, but it's hard not to like this deal from a Patriots perspective. A cost certain starting caliber TE for at least 2 years, at age 27, that is a good blocker, and a solid receiver. Good deal for the Pats.
I hear his hands aren't consistent.

While I do like the trade I want to point out a 4th and a 6th are very different. The 4th isa round the Pats have a lot of success in. The 6th is just long shots. Sometimes it works out but often not.

Personally I have always felt there is a big drop off in talent that happens in or after the 4th round. Generally I feel you can reliably say there is a talent drop off there and this year is no exception. That 62 picks is a big drop in talent usually IMO.

I always felt the draft is usually in the following tiers.

1-5
5-15
15-45
45-120
120-UDFA

This draft is a bit different but I still feel after 120 or so the drop off will happen like usual.
