Lombardi's Thoughts on Malcolm Butler

Makes me think they're not close on a contract
They have to tender him whether they are close or not. If they didn't he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Butler will get his money either here or somewhere. He need's to wait. He needed to be tender. I would like him to stay here but i think it's critical that we grab a corner this year.

A team can give him a contract and lose a first rounder. Any idea when was the last time this happened even though i feel it won't happen but you never know.

I can't think of it ever happening with a first. I think Sean Gilbert 100 years ago was signed as a tagged guy and cost 2 1sts. Of course that turned out to be a terrible move.

Its hard to see a team pay a first and a big contract. remains to be seen if this causes issue with agreement on contract next off season. 55 million a lot of money. would seem odd its neither spent on Hightower or Butler. Both deserving of big pay days.

I am confident that hightower will be here. The cap keep's going up. You have to keep in mind as well that amendola hasn't restructure his contract. I love dola but 6 million's too rich for him.

I would have liked to have seen us extend Malcolm, but I expect they'll get an offer and then we'll match because any team willing to give up a 1st is probably not going to be looking at giving him the most competitive deal.

I'm sure Malcolm is annoyed he hasn't made the bajillions yet after all that has gone down, I would be. But I suspect that rolling around in millions of dollars will help with that.

Butler is a top 5 CB in the NFL....gotta sign him...im not buying the "we'll get a first rounder and just draft someone" argument....keep the known commodity

Butler isn't really "deserving" of a big payday because he is in his RFA year.
Hightower is still being negotiated.

But if either won't settle for what the team feels they value them at, different players will get the money, the team will look diffeent, have different strengths and weaknesses but still win.

What if they let Revis go?
And Collins
And jones
And browner
And wilfork
And ayers
And Arrington
And siliga
And mayo

How would you have answered that in 3/2015?
Because they did and 2 years later won the SB with the #1 defense in the NFL.

We are still working on extending him. The tender doesn't change that.

you know what I mean by deserving. Go play pedantic Pete elsewhere.
The Distinction is important.
Players don't get paid because they deserve it, they get paid because it's their time.

like gronk and the prisoner. Butler is a weird case. Not drafted. Older coming off a rookie contract. Negotiations appear at standstill. I wish him well and hope he gets a great deal at some stage. Whether it's here or not.

I'm sure that part of the reason that the talks broke down is that the Patriots
want the 3.9 million RFA year included as part of the overall contract. They
did the same thing years ago with Deon Branch and the remaining 5th year
of his contract. Seattle was willing to tear the last year up.
Signing with the Patriots is like going to college. Four or five years and hit the road.
