Lombardi's Thoughts on Malcolm Butler

He has to be worth less than if he was UFA. Probably a lot less. He would eventually get/take the money. We're better off getting him for whatever the lesser amount is now. It's a built in hometown discount. Whatever that price, based on loss of pick, I think it's cheap enough that they match.

Has NE even officially put a tender on Butler?

Nope, but why would they if there are still negotiations going on ?

Doesn't make a difference if they do it now or on Thursday a minute before the deadline.

NE wants to make sure they don't pull a Denver!

Yes they made the tender... He's gone if there's some smart teams out there

As much as I hate to say it felgers right on this one... A team in the bottom of the draft that needs def help should sign him - Miami, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta... Would be worth it to them....

Hope this doesn't backfire

Smart enough to pay him more than we will match and give up a 1st round pick for the privilege?

Teams almost never sign 1st round tendered RFAs.

If you think big picture its like paying your draft choice 10 times as much.

Makes me think they're not close on a contract

Agreed. I wouldn't mind losing butler for a 1st and drafting a promising CB who will be cheap for the next 4-5 years. Then we can sign Bennett and Hightower again.

I've still have not forgotten about how Curtis Martin left. You kind of have to keep some of your powder dry just in case a contender in the AFC signs him to a deal that's difficult to match. For that reason alone the team has an interest to try signing him now because the money is going to be tied up anyway. This assumes of course Bill feels Butler is more valuable than a low first. I feel like he is.

I think the defense from 2014 to 2016 taught me no one is irreplaceable, especially when there is a cap.

Giardi reporting Butler not happy w his situation in NE....

With the talent at cornerback in the draft this year, I'm not worried. I don't see any team being able to sign him for more than we could/would match and give up a first round pick. In the unlikely event that does happen, assuming Ryan hadn't signed before Malcom, I assume they'd reevaluate their top offer to Logan.

What do you expect? He is a probowl corner who is grossely underpaid. He could make 11-14 million per year on the open market

I expect the team to make more of an effort to sign him longterm

Some of you just don't get it. The Pats have a figure in mind and won't exceed it. It's called financial responsibility in which most teams in the NFL don't have. If a team wants to pay some erroneous amount for Butlers service and Pats don't match, then so be it.

It would stink but at least we would get a 1st rounder to help rebuild.

We as fans need to get over the fact that the Pats are not going to over pay for anyone!!

I suspect Butler wants a massive payday which he deserves, but sorry Malcolm your not going to get it in New England.

Butler is the most important part of our defense and without him it goes back to 2011 awfulness.
