WEEI.com to cut back on Pats coverage

As an out of tower, I listen to 3 podcasts for Pats coverage:
1. D&H
2. Zolak & Bertrand
3. Kirk and Callahan

Any other suggestions?

Sirius Radio Channel 88. There is no alternative.

Sportstalk radio used to be something I rarely missed, now it is something I rarely listen to.. except Toucher and Rich who make me laugh out loud.. I want to listen to Zolak, but he is overshadowed by Bertram and rarely asserts himself..

The need to be a contrarian overwhelms the need to be a good sportscaster.. Callahan and Angry Kurt, Bombastic Ordway , conspiracy guy Bertram and then Felger the Cheesehead..

Not sure if you hearD the story the other day, Toucher and Rich interview Brandon Meriweather weekly, it is humorous and they get a lot of mileage about it.. then Matt Light called in with this story about Brandon and the probowl.. laughed my ass off.

Matt Light tricked Brandon Meriweather into giving his bar tab to Bill Belichick

“It’s a table full of veterans. All the guys are cutting up, having a good time. This is right around the pool. [Meriweather]’s kind of the young guy, kind of the odd man out, and he’s not saying much. He’s just laughing, joining in the festivities, and I walked over to him and — I [had seen] him order a drink from the waitress — I said, ‘Hey man, you do know that you can put all this on Bill’s room, right?’ Now you’ve got to remember, Belichick and the entire staff were coaching the AFC.

“Now I go up there saying that just busting his chops. I didn’t really know what was going to happen, but I figured I’d plant that seed. He looks at me and he says, ‘Are you serious?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, man. You don’t ever pay for your drinks when your coach is here coaching.’ I’m like, ‘Come on. Come on, rook.’ So I walk away; I’m not thinking anything of it.”

“Fast forward like four or five hours. I literally witnessed him walk up to Bill with his check, like the little card that has your bill in it, and hand it to coach Belichick and say, ‘Hey, thank you coach. I appreciate you,’ in a way only that he could do it. Like you could imagine what that conversation looked like.

“And I’ll never forget — Bill’s looking at him like, ‘What are you talking about?’ But Linda’s like, ‘Go ahead, take care of the tab. Help him out, right?’ It was the most uncomfortable awkward moment I’ve ever witnessed with coach.”

From Chad Finn's Globe article today about the CSN moves (article doesn't talk about WEEI). Looks like the crap just rolls on:
There is a strong belief with the CSN staff that this will have a major effect on its own programming. “SportsNet Central” — that show Neumeier and McAdam were just on — is not expected to survive much longer in its current form as the network shifts away from featuring a news/highlights program.

The staff was told Thursday that much of the programming in March will be infomercials and reruns of staff-produced documentaries (such as the recent one on the 1986 Celtics) as new shows get a “test drive.” Those shows will be opinion-driven, not information- and highlight-driven.

Not a bad thing.

I must have watched the 86 Celtics docu about 9 times.

The Baseball Show was decent but McAdam just drones on....

That's terrible news.

Who they really need to drop is that irritating harpy Trenni Kusnierek.

The fact that guys like Price and McAdam are deemed expendable and guys like Tanguay and Minihane not only survive, but seemingly thrive, speaks volumes about today's media priorities. Simply stated, it's idiot-centric. Honest, fact-driven, non-bombastic opinion is dismissed and contrived, phony, vitriol is not just desired, but admired. In that business, if you hold to your principles and continue to be genuine, your shelf life is limited. Either change or expire. In my opinion, a good example of this is Lou Merloni. When he began on radio, I considered him enjoyable to listen to. He obviously knew baseball and seemed genuinely interested in the other sports, although less knowledgeable which was to be expected. But, he worked at it and got better incrementally. Then, he figured it out. He morphed into Angry Lou. Pissed off about everyone and everything. He discovered that John Farrell, rightly or wrongly, had detractors and he pounced on that fact to a point where he daily excoriated Farrell all summer. Lou, likewise, became a serial alarmist about the Patriots, the o-line and defense (which were admittedly easy targets) in particular because he sensed that those topics were red meat to those angry mutts in the kennel. He's just one example, but the overall state of local sports radio and TV is just pathetic.

I live in metro New York (Long Guyland). WFAN dominates sports talk here, and is hands down more actual-sports-oriented with waaaaay less (if any) hot-takes-steaming-pile-of-anti-home-team-crap morons. I can listen to that station talk New York sports (!) FAR longer than I can tolerate the yucksters on either 98.5 or WEEI (with a few exceptions).

That IMHO is just wrong.

I guess you can check out PFW In Progress

PFW In Progress

I don't listen to it as much as I used to, because Andy and Paul (despite knowing their football really well) never seem to give this team their due respect. They really are prone to nitpick and complain.

John Rooke is more lowkey than PFW....though he might be a snooze lol

Since defamegate my listening to either of them has gone from frequently throughout the day to basically just the Holley and Dale show occasionally. Listening to them toss a should be celebrated once in a lifetime legacy in the trash can in trade for clickbait ratings was just too much for me. So now it's just the H&D show, NPR and some music.

It is what it is.

Couldn't agree with you more, OR. Here in Metro West, 6:00-10:00 am on TV offers Toucher and Rich on Comcast, WFAN/Boomer and Carton on CBSS and Mike and Mike on. ESPN2. At the beginning, my priorities were 98.5, ESPN2 and then WFAN. Over time, those priorities have been reversed: WFAN, ESPN2 and 98.5. I despise every New York team with the heat of a million suns. But, I've found that Boston teams get more respect on WFAN and ESPN2 ( unbelievably) than they do on 98.5.

If you use the (free) TuneIn app, listen to 96.3 WJAB "The Big Jab" in the morning (Shoe and Joe). They're out of Maine... a lot of interviews with Boston writers... a lot of calls... and they TALK ABOUT THE GAMES.

thanks for the link. The x Pats podcast is very good. Lots of good insights and stories by Koppen and Mayo. Giardi tries keep it moving and funny. BTW- I sometimes find Giardi very annoying, especially when he's on TV, but he DOES know football. IIRC he was a very good WR at a division 3 WR (Trinity I think). So he gets a bit of a pass from me, because he's not ignorant about the game.

Anybody ever heard this guy's podcast?

some of you rich guys should buy an FCC license and put ME on the air.... Joe Kerr's Goodell Hour...sponsored by Westinghouse electric chairs, Dow chemical lethal injections and Louisville Slugger.

I promise the show and the station will be a REAL HIT...within hours

I thought the fact that 98.5 has to do a decent amount of Bruins and Celtics coverage that WEEI not having to do much of it at all was their competitive advantage. Sure Bruins fans are rabid, but they are not nearly as many as Patriots fans.

I don't get why WEEI would cut down on the Pats coverage and dump one of their only pure football guys. Tom Curran is getting more time on the air, but I don't think he will replace Price.
