Game over for rest of the league: Brissett is back

Or incase Brady goes down in the playoffs and Jimmy winds up getting hurt as well, I would want all 3 QBs active for safe measure rather than just Jimmy if Brady were to go down and being screwed if something happened to Jimmy as well and being left with Edelman as the backup QB, obviously unlikely to to happen but its the NFL, smarter to have Jacoby on the roster as well instead of running with just one backup

Were JAG to get hurt in the playoffs, his trade value plummets. He'll be perceived as not physically suited for NFL level play.

Nightmare scenario of course, but if Brady goes down, the Pats are not dead with Jimmy.

Good points all, Tune, but I mentioned he is very raw. I don't want to see him anywhere near the field in a meaningful game until at least 2019 or later.

Parcel's said the kid is the rare type who takes coaching and can actually IMPLEMENT it. Reiss reported the coaches saying in TC something on the same vain.

Demeanor-wise Brissett holds himself with remarkable poise and maturity. Is he a sure thing? Heck no. But I have not been so impressed with a raw rookie qb in a long time that I have been impressed with Jacoby Brissett.

Whatever he needs to work on, the book on him from Parcells and the coaching staff and BB (the road trip thing) points to him being able to implement in time.
My concern with quarterbacks like this is superior throwing mechanics tend to be a physically innate skill set you either have or you don't. They can be improved by coaching only to a limited extent (re., Tim Tebow and other former Pats QB projects like Rohan Davey), point being that at full game speed they tend to revert back to how they're wired naturally because they're thinking about/reacting to what's happening on the field vs. being deliberately mindful of proper mechanics. Again by example, Tebow would have textbook throwing motion in practice and warm-ups which evaporated in games. Maybe Brissett will be different, we can only hope.

Hey, Just thinking outside the box. Wouldn't have to be permanent, but it could be a way for him to be useful the rest of the year, then go back to being the #3 QB when TC rolls around next spring.

Gwedd, get back in the damn box.

I think I finally get it. This is really BB posting here with his over the top love of TEs.

The issue with Jimmy is i think he is the real deal and probably a few teams do as well. The Pats can offer him a deal after 2017 but other teams will offer more and he will get to play. Why not go? No reason for him not to.

Also Brady has looked as good as ever this year. I do think he can probably play another 3+ years (maybe till 44 or 45 even) at a good to great level.

So after years of looking for the next guy we found him and the times do not line up. That is too bad. Hopefully they can find another Jimmy G but those players don't grow on trees. Maybe 1-2 come up a year and sometimes none.

He can't run the scout team for the SB prep against the Seahawks if he is on IR, right? There you go. BB thinking ahead...

Jacoby will never be better than Jimmy, trading Jimmy is trading our future away, Jacoby is all hopes and wishes, Jimmy is the real deal

Except for that whole not being able to make it through two games without getting hurt thing.

JAG did not impress in his 1st camp. Inaccurate. Slow to release, he was saved by the no-touch rule in camp enabling his plays. But good coaching + hard work brought forth his talent. Brady's 1st camp was decent but unimpressive to the casual fan, but not to BB. In sharp contrast was his 2nd 2001 camp where to the non-professional eye he outperformed The Statue.

So, what we're seeing here is that like in 2000 where 1st camp Brady was pretty much a stealth rookie, Bisquick has shown attributes in his 1st camp admired by BB and the staff.
Garoppolo's mechanics and release were never a a problem, they were/are his strength. What you're referring to in his rookie camp is his mental game, the learning curve processing information at NFL speed at the line of scrimmage. There's a big difference between speed of release and the time it takes to visually/mentally work through progressions deciding where to throw it.

Huh, quite a few posts here calling this a "waste of a roster spot" or even suggesting a short-term position change to make Brissett "useful." It reminds me of the flood of posts when Garoppolo was drafted about how it was a waste of a draft pick -- and then all over again when Brissett was drafted.

In the Brady age, I think we PatsFans have come to vastly undervalue the backup quarterback position. (I would have thought this season might have cured us of it, though!) IMO backup QB is such an important role that preparing JB to take it over next year is absolutely worth slot #53 on the roster.

Watching this kid in TC, in PS, in a couple of games where he was thrown in prematurely, and then simply his comportment on the sidelines and in the locker room I can see why Parcells has said Brissett is the real deal.

What jumped out at me also is his throwing motion. It's Brady! He throws leaning forward over the top like. Jim Palmer pitch. Jimmy G is more like a Drew Bree's slinger from a lower arm slot. I would imagine the Pats WRs see the ball coming at them more similarly when Jacoby is throwing than when Jimmy is.

If he continues a slow and steady apprenticeship I can easily be optomistic with Jacoby Brissett taking over in 3-4 years.

hmmmmmm.....Brissett can make pre-snap reads and has a quick-release like Brady? That's definitely not the impression I got from watching him

His intangible are another thing.....we can only go off the word of Parcellls and the coaching staff, and they seem to love the kid.... but his throwing mechanics are not nearly as fundamentally sound as Tom's, and I certainly feel Jimmy has a better release (and a pretty quick one too!)

Except for that whole not being able to make it through two games without getting hurt thing.

A little contradiction there considering Jacoby hurt his thumb against Houston which was his first full game while Jimmy got hurt halfway thru his second game in the middle of a blowout

I'm not arguing the merits of Jacoby over Jimmy.

I think it's just way too early for any of us to know for sure If Jimmy (or Jacoby for that matter) has what it takes to be a long term starter. Not a big enough sample size. Durability is a HUGE factor in the success of any NFL player, way overlooked IMO.

The fact is Brady is going to play at least 2 more years (or he intends to). There is no way we can keep JG cooling his heels on the bench any longer. His value is high - especially with the dearth of good QB play in the league. Sell high - and Jimmy is high right now. Even if we thought he could be the replacement we hoped, Brady continuing to play makes that moot. And honestly it is iffy at best that he is the QB of the future.

Initially, I never wanted to part ways with Jimmy G... he seems to have a lot of potential. I have no doubt he'll become a solid NFL player... perhaps even a franchise QB someday. However, given the level Brady is playing at this point in his career (and the long-term positional needs of this team) I would gladly trade Jimmy for a 1st round pick + mid-rounders. Even if Jimmy becomes a HOF player...that kind of trade offer is something you cannot pass up on.

I wish Jimmy nothing but the best....and I hope the team can find a way to get him traded to the Bears (instead of the dysfunctional Browns) so that he can play for his hometown team
