AFC vs NFC

Funny how we haven't been hearing anything about that dominant NFC lately. That's because the AFC has clinched at least a tie in their head to head matches for the season. If it was the other way around the mediots would have let everyone know about it.

The AFC holds a 31-30-1 edge with one more game left this week. That game is Indy at Minny and this could be the only time that I root for them, though I might be happier with the AFC's tie than seeing them win a game. I probably won't know for sure until I see a score.

Anyone else care either way?

Well people have come around on the AFC as the season has gone on. I think the AFC has more legit contenders while the NFC has more depth after those teams.

Top teams AFC - Pats, KC, Raiders, Steelers, Broncos? NFC - Cowboys, Seahawks Giants?
Good teams AFC - Ravens Titans NFC - Lions, GB, Bucs, Redskins, Falcons, Vikings.

I will say that when looking at the standings and seeing that the Lions currently occupy the NFC's #2 seed, it's an interesting starting point for the debate.

No hate on the Lions, Stafford has been great, but..yeah.

My first post here was wrong. The AFC had already won the season series when Indy went to Minny and won. The final record is AFC 33-30-1.

Another thing to consider is that the AFC is 29-16-2 in seasons won, not counting the 2-2 they went in the first two years when the leagues only played in the SB. The AFC's edge came from two fairly long runs of winning vs the NFC in 1972-80 and 1996-2006.

The total won lost record for the AFC is 1311-1199. That's a lead that won't be made up anytime soon.

The only place the NFC has an edge is in the SB. The AFC is 24-26 and pretty close considering that the NFC had a winning streak from 1984-96 when two of the NFC dynasties (SF & Dallas) were cheating. The AFC closed the gap with 3 out of the last 4 after the NFC had won 3 straight.

And yet, every year starts with talk about how much stronger the NFC is than the AFC.

Yes, I see your point, but I think it's only natural to hate teams that your team plays more often in the regular season and much more in the playoffs.

My distaste for the NFC goes back to the AFL days and still lingers today.

Exactly. All of my hated teams are in the AFC - basically your list plus the Steelers and Texans, so I would just assume the NFC had their way against the AFC with the Patriots as the only exception.

Take away the Pats 3-1 record vs the NFC and the AFC still won more games vs the NFC. And as noted above by @Patsfanin Philly, if you take out the AFCN's 4-11-1 record vs the NFCE it would be a 29-19 blowout.

Of course we should hate the AFC more. Those are the teams the Pats play most and the only teams they compare records with to get into the playoffs. But, once the Pats are out, I usually root for the AFC in the SB. There have only been a handful of exceptions to that in a half century.

If the Pats don't win (say it ain't so) I'd like to see KC, Houston or Tennessee take it all. If the AFC can win the SB this year they would then be only 1 win behind, in spite of the 13 year run the NFC had from 84-96.

Actually, now that I think about it more, there have been more than a handful of exceptions. The two Peyton losses were wonderful but the win was terrible. That cakewalk should have been the Pats revenge game for 1985.

I also rooted against the Raiders in 2002. After all the crying from the year before I enjoyed every bit of that slaughter.

In my defense for not rooting against the Ravens, at the time they won they weren't the Ratbirds yet. A lot has changed and I wouldn't be caught dead (I have to look that saying up) rooting for them now.

I also remember being very disappointed when the Bills went for four years in a row and couldn't catch a break and get a win.

Head to head on the field of play is the best way to judge teams and right now the AFC is way ahead of the NFC. Anything else is an opinion.

Brady is the best QB. That means that the AFC has a more difficult schedule against the Pats than the NFC, who only face Brady 4 out of 16 games, or 5 out of 19 if the Pats make it to the SB.

Now, if you want to talk about garbage, how about those NFCS and NFCW divisions? Six of those eight teams stink to high heaven.

For a team in black and silver with a tough guy image, they sure do cry a lot. I thought that California was known for wine, not whine.

With all of the calls they've had go their way over the years, I'm shocked that they have the balls to complain. But they do... a lot.

Raider fans still cry about the Immaculate Reception, which after seeing it a hundred times still looks like a legitimate, great catch and run. How many years ago was that?

They cried incessantly about a legitimate call in the Snow Bowl vs the Pats in 2001. They cried so hard and for so long that the rule was changed a decade or so later.

Think about this: How sweet would the irony be if the Raiders got knocked out this year by the Pats on a fumble called on Carr because the rule was changed.

I can hear Slater now... Whaddyathink about changing the tuck rule... Ohhhhhhhhhhhh... Yeeaaaahhh!!!!!!!
