I saw a rumor couple days ago about alshon jefferys to the patriots. Who knows i am just shocked about this trade
Yeah, I doubt we're going back to the idea of paying a WR who will see limited touches 15m dollars a year, but if he goes that route Alshon Jeffrey is a fine selection.

Lombardi spitting knowledge on the Herd.

And we will NEVER know what truly happened as the team does not reveal anything off the field unless you find sources like....

1) Asking the fly on the wall that was present at the time of the decision
or
2) Asking Almighty God himself to send you down the answer from above

Also #1 assumes you speak "fly".

Still in his prime but i don't think pats would offered 15 million. I rather go after a guy like kendall wright who might not cost as much.

Yeah, you lost me a bit there, but let me try one more time for those who don't understand:

Goodell punished us by taking away draft picks, but he cannot stop the team from acquiring picks through trades. The one issue is that we cannot select any pick acquired via trade higher than where we would've originally picked.

No, what Goodell said is that he is taking the lowest 4th round pick that the Patriots have, so if the Pats only have their 4th (then they would not be able to trade it), he will take that. If they aquire additional 4th round pick(s) he will take the lowest 4th round pick they have. So let's assume that the Browns end up with the worst record and both the Pats and the Seahawks make the playoffs.

There is no way the NFL issues 8 3rd round comp picks, so the Browns are not going to get a third round comp pick, so just take that thought out of the equation right now. So the Browns are going to trade the Pats there 4th round pick which should be someone around pick # 102. Pick # 102 for Collins, that sounds terrible, but wait IT GETS WORSE!! That pick is GONE, stolen by Goodell. The only compensation the Patriots are receiving for Jaime Collins is their ability to keep the 4th round pick that got from Seattle in exchange for pick #147 in 2016, which they acquired from Miami for their picks #196, 204, & 250. That is provided the Patriots go farther in the playoffs than the Seahawks. So basically they traded Jaime Collins for a late 4th round pick.

If I told you this am that the Patriots were going to trade Collins for a late fourth round pick, would you have liked that?

Interesting:

"Bingo!!! We've got bingo!!!"

This exactly. How could they only get a 3rd?

Well Jones went for a late 2nd and that was with the Cardinals getting all of training camp and all 16 games of the 2016 season barring injury

This would be getting Collins half way thru the season with no training camp, so I understand the lower compensation (not that much lower tho, seeings how the Browns will most likely have the 1st overall pick)

What I don't understand is why they traded Collins away when we're in the middle of a championship run.. we would have received a 3rd rounder anyways if he left via FA, granted it would have been at the very end of the round but the value that Collins provides this year would make up for that IMO

Really shocked about this... obviously they felt they just couldn't realistically get a deal done with him, but I was hoping they would get Hightower done and just make him highest paid MLB, then franchise Collins to keep him around 1 more year

Dont feel good about this trade.. we have a stacked team with the best chance at a SB that we've had since 2007, so to lose an elite player like Collins is just devestating, especially a fan favorite like Collins

Ouch... it will take me a few days to get over this one

I don't see this as a cap move. If it were, why not wait until after the season? This has more to do with Collins playing within a scheme and "doing his job." It bums me out to read that he's gone, but I'm not pessimistic that the Patriots can't make adjustments.

Whatever. We need to focus on what the Patriots will do to replace a gifted athlete in both the run game and the passing game. There are some good linebackers on the team, and lots of flexibility with the players they have. It will be interesting to watch the front seven when they get back in action against Seattle in two weeks.

The timing makes perfect sense to me with the trade deadline and the bye to make adjustments.

We just traded away one of our best defensive players and I have never seen so many "WTFs" in one day on this board. Add one more receiver to an already potent offense without improving on defense and I bet people here will compare us to Colts (adding more offensive weapons when there is a clear need to improved on D).

I'm unsure on who the specific player may be, but I'd definitely agree with you that Belichick enjoys his value pickups.

I think it would be very exciting to have a franchise, downfield WR here, but it may also be impractical for value purposes and lack of touches.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Collins trade just yet, but why does trading Collins = Pats not winning the Super Bowl to some of you?

That would be due to the sky falling I believe.

Something tells me this guy was not giving it 100 percent. I really hope that wasn't the case.

Not saying "Collins Sucks" at all - just presenting this FYI :

Collins has played 1,109 snaps and missed 387 snaps in the regular season since the 2015 opener. There was virtually no difference in the opposing quarterbacks' Total QBR scores when Collins was on the field (53.8) compared with when he was off it (54.6). The Patriots' opponents actually fared better with Collins on the field across a range of categories: yards per play, yards per rush, yards per pass attempt and third-down conversion rate.

Why Collins trade makes sense for Patriots

Not gonna read all 37 pages but.....

How many times has a big trade where we lose a guy turned out to be a crusher? Zero?

I don't like it either but I trust BB

The bottom line is that Goodell can't stop us from acquiring picks via trades, and can only take the higher pick in that round. It's the exact same scenario that we discussed all offseason when debating whether or not we could actually trade someone for a 1st and still pick (which could've happened.)

Whether they use their original pick or Seattle's shouldn't really make much of a difference since they'll both likely choose in the bottom third of their rounds. Any speculation as to how many third round comps the NFL will hand out is just that--pure speculation. While you may end up correct, I doubt that it's something Belichick hasn't already considered.

I
I don't know if I agree that the defense has been terrible, but Lombardi definitely makes a good point that it's not where it needs to be.

It has sucked on some 3rd downs. The lack of rush still scares me. How long can a secondary hold up. Don't play much man.
