Hurricane Matthew threatens the East Coast...

I think the "scientists" over at Exponent reach their conclusions pretty much the same way meteorologists do - i.e. by flipping a coin.

Except that exponent "flips the coin" in a dark backroom with no witnesses, and miraculously it always lands on the side that the company who just paid exponent millions of dollars wanted it to land on

So it's gonna pull an Ivan. Damn thing hit Florida twice in 2005.

life imitating art:

I'm worried about losing power while the Patriots play. I live in CT and it will be a category 1 when it hits my area.

Don't be so sure that it will drop to a 1. Also, there is one projection floating around that it could actually loop around and hit Florida twice, which would delay it getting to NE, but would make things even worse..

I agree **** the games. I'm in Volusia County and headed down to Boca in the morning to secure my house. Hopefully it heads out further east but it doesn't look good.

Drive safe..

FWIW, this thing is gonna explode overnight.

By the time we wake up, it'll be Cat4, maybe on it's way back to Cat5 status.

Well Jax Beach was officially evacuated yesterday. Those that chose to stay are taking a very big chance as the flooding alone will be horrible. It should be anywhere from a Cat 1-3 by the time it is up here. I shuttered my house then we packed up and headed inland to my girlfriend's sister's place. I have family and friends in South Florida and they're going to get the brunt of this. It's now expected to strengthen to a 4 when it makes landfall.

FYI, I've been watching the weather and it looks like this storm is going to be extremely dangerous.

Be careful.

Side note: I've informed my children that if I ever see them reporting a storm while standing in it I will disown them.

Sounds like you guys in Fla. are taking this seriously-which you should. Its been a few years since Fla has been hit by a major hurricane(cat 3 or greater). There is NO comparison between a cat 1 and even a cat 3.. Ive been through 6 hurricanes since '96 in southeastern NC--but when we got hit by Fran in '96(wavered between a 3-4)--most of us werent prepared for the devastation-we had been through a bunch of cat 1's and thought we knew.....a cat 1 is basically a glorified thunderstorm-a cat 3 or greater is a killer storm. The area was completely shut down for weeks-power outages lasted for months-people died-hundreds of homes and businesses destroyed. Couldnt drive because most streets were blocked by huge trees-not the little ones you get in a cat1-im talkin big ol trees. Storm surge was -boats ended up in peoples living rooms a 1/4 mile from the coast-but its the wind that really destroys evrything. This storm is not as big as Fran in size-but it is in power- a cat3-4 in south fla-dont underestimate it.

good luck and stay safe! i have family in florida as well though they are not as far out east as you.

Damn, the latest recon dropsonde has the pressure @ 937 MB and dropping. This thing is bombing out and Nassau is getting rocked at this moment. Eye wall peak gust reported @ 133 KTS.

Prayers to all in its path :(

with my buddies, I climbed to the top of Blue Hills during hurricane Bob.......I was not impressed

Family down in Jupiter seems to want to ignore our warnings... He's never been in a hurricane before and seems to think he'll be fine and it won't be that bad... Trying to convince him, but some people are just stubborn as hell. Hope he makes it through ok.

LOl. Dude! You dont get real hurricanes in new england! i grew up there. A hurricanes power is dependent on WARM water-aka gulf stream-that is why it is almost impossible for anyhwere north of virginia to ever get a major hurricane(category 3 or greater). once the 'cane hits cold water or land it starts weakening. With all due respect to the poor folks in nj/ny, sandy was a weak storm-but it carried a lot of rain hence the flooding. The few 'canes that have hit mass. are basically glorified thunder storms. This storm aint no weak-ass rain shower like Bob-or any other storm in new england-its a totally different animal. Thousands of people will lose their jobs and homes-many businesses will be out of business for months-people will die-dont talk smack about something you know NOTHING about. with all due respect bro.

Cat 2 ain't nothing. This projected to be a cat 4 and had a wind gust recorded of 170 about an hour or so ago. Expecting 145 mph winds as it approaches Florida for landfall.

And another important factor is that New England is protected by the JEST fans on Long Island. :D

Agree. A Category 2 is just a reason for a party. It's a really bad thunderstorm. Category 4 is time to hunker down. We already had beach erosion yesterday in Jax Beach and the storm hasn't even made landfall yet.
