Running Backs on the Bubble

The Mike Reisses of every team at ESPN did an outlook of the player most likely on the bubble.
The running backs, per their analysis:

• Daniel Thomas, Miami Dolphins - Miami drafted Kenyan Drake, Jay Ajayi is the starter
• Knile Davis, Kansas City Chiefs - behind Spencer Ware, Charcandirck West, and Jamaal Charles
• Roy Helu Jr, Oakland/LV Raiders - Oakland drafted DeAndre Washington and undrafted Jalen Richard, Latavius Murray is the starter, Taiwan Jones is third-down back
• Andre Williams, NY Giants - added Paul Perkins to Rashad Jennings, Orleans Darkwa, Bobby Rainey, Shane Vereen
• Tre Mason, Los Angeles Rams - he's unproductive and a turd, behind Gurley and Benny Cunningham
• Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks - three rookie backs in the draft

Most of them are just low ceiling players who had early productivity or are just plain garbage, and the most tempting one (Helu) had been passed on by this team last offseason.

Were it not for the arrest issue, Tre Mason would be intriguing.

Two years ago he averaged 4.3 ypc and only lost one fumble all year, with a few receptions too. But as mentioned, he seems to be a turd, character-wise.

Since we strangely didn't draft a RB in this draft, I wouldn't mind trading for one.

I love Vikings' Jerick McKinnon. He will never be used by being behind AP, but the guy is a beast. 3rd season, we can get him for cheap, play him with the comitee this year, extend him next year and watch him explode, making Lewis and McKinnon the best backfield in the NFL, behind the GOAT QB. Man... Wait, why do I have an erection right now?

As much as the BC alum in me loves Andre, he's been awful in the NFL and I have no idea how he's still on the Giants other than Coughlin's absurd loyalty to BC players. He basically takes the handout and slams at high speed into the backs of his blockers and falls over. It's ugly.

All of these players are terrible. I like the McKinnon suggestion someone had here but the Vikings probably won't part with him since Peterson is old and injury prone.

I still think Andre can play in this league. Gmen line gas been sucky as well

No, thank you, on any of them. The draft was the time to get a RB. That time has come and passed. Let's hope the decision to not draft one doesn't come back to bite the team this season.

BB values good D players more than RB's......given a choice, I'll venture to say he'd go D player and grab a RB later or as a UDFA.....

Certainly. CJ Prosise would have fit this offense perfectly. He was recently converted to running back, but he has experience at multiple positions (played receiver and special teams prior to his season at RB). Big, versatile, shifty in the open field but not a dancer, can run with some power. Not an overwhelming talent, but a very solid player who can do a lot of things. Similar play style to say, Matt Forte or maybe Fred Jackson. He went 90 overall, so we would have had ample opportunity to take him. The QB and Oline we nabbed in that area could have been had later, most likely. I would have used 78 on him with no problem.

Jonathan Williams was my other target. He went in the 5th, and I would have been more than happy to spend 112 on him (although I do like Mitchell, who we took in that draft slot). Williams is another solid player who doesn't excel at any one thing, but can lower his shoulder to pick up tough yards, and displayed pretty good vision and balance. If he hadn't been injured I think he was a second round lock.

Others have mentioned Dixon. He would also have been a solid choice, although his tape wasn't as impressive to me as these two. The bottom line is that there were options, many of whom the draft collective here liked, and the Patriots had a different set of evaluations. It happens. We'll just have to hope that our guys stay healthy, and that the line play is improved, which will lead to increased production at the RB position.

Yes; yes they are.

No they're not. Hell, Daniel Thomas was on the Patriots practice squad once, and the Patriots didn't want Helu last year. These guys are no better than Bolden, and none of them are special teamers.

The running back crop in this past draft was pretty horrible too after Elliot and arguably Henry.

I posted this in my thread about the BB dinner but it seems relevant to this conversation. And maybe explains why he has drafted one in a few years. I still wouldn't be shocked by a veteran signing but any here was what BB said:


one of the better technical questions came when someone asked if the growing weight on the oline combined with shrinking weight from LBs that are becoming more and more hybrid and if that could lead to a resurgence in the running game.

His response IMO was pretty telling as it relates to the way he has built this team.

He said that it continues to be harder and harder to run the ball and went onto to say that rather than a resurgence he sees more of a progression that comes from the QBs running the Ball and not just scrambles which has always been there but with the designed runs for the QB it's like adding an extra runner to the attack.
He did wonder if it will continue or if it's just a new trend like the run and shoot.
He continued to talk about weight on the oline saying back on the giants you hardly ever saw 300 pound linebackers and now they almost all are at least 300. But he also said that it's kind of topping out and that with such a spread out game these days a bigger guy on defense gets replaced by 2/3 of the game with a DB. And when he came in they hardly ever ran nickel.
