OT: Chiefs punished for tampering

Big fines too. Damn.

Chiefs need to appeal. They can bring up the only $100,000 fine the Jets got for tampering. Of course, it will go to the commissioner so chance of success is low. But it will bring the BS out to the public and the media.

On the contrary, Clark Hunt needs to hold a press conference and tell everyone how lucky and privileged he is to be part of the other 31, and that for the good of his 31 friends he'll drop the case. That always goes well and creates future goodwill within the league office.

So stupid. What about all the other teams who were "tampering" early last year? Dolphins with Suh? Eagles with Maxwell? Several more. What about all the teams clearly doing it this year?

That was just a day or two before FA began though. Even worse was in mid-December, the Jets tampered with Revis, yet they only got a $100k fine. Not only did the Cheifs get a total of $350k in fines, they also lost a 3rd and 6th.

That's the NYFL for you!

Absolutely insane.

I still think the Jets succeeded in turning the attention around off themselves and onto the bogus claim that Kraft had tampered as well, which may have lessened the importance of the whole situation in the league's eyes.

How much longer are the Jets going to get away with tampering without a real punishment?

Jets were cleared for repeated tampering with Deion Branch. DeSean Jackson and Darrelle Revis. But, no, it's us being paranoid. Ha, I swear, the NYJFL* just makes it up as they go along. So infuriating.

I f'n hate the NFL front office....

..And the Jets.

Statement from Clark here - says completely inconsistent with other cases and NFL conmunications aren't clear:

Clark Hunt: Tampering penalty inconsistent with past discipline

Gee, where have we heard that before? Certainly nothing to do with cameras anyway....

Leaving the Jets out of the equation for the moment, he's exactly right. Previous cases have usually resulted in no more than a 4th round loss and a swap of later round draft picks with the affected team. Not a 3rd rounder and flat out removal of a 3nd late round pick. Way to go Goodell!

If you're trying to detect a pattern in the NFL's punishments for tampering, all of which occurred under Goodell's watch:

49ers - Baseline punishment
Lions - Reasonable increase in punishment
Jets - Noticeable decrease in punishment
Chiefs - Significant increase in punishment

Remember, though, the league applies it's rules evenly, to all teams.
