Yup, Upshaw is a UFA. All depends on the money, if it's anything too significant I'd rather the Pats paid it as a premium toward locking up Collins and Hightower. If he comes cheap, though, on account of not putting up gaudy stats? Definitely, I could see him being a great value pickup.

There are a couple of points to your post that I just can't get my head around.

1) Offering Upshaw the cap space you might have saved on High. What space would that be? High will be paid $8m this year and he most likely will consume ~$1om AAV (signing bonus, guarantees, salary, etc) with an extension here. Are you saying Courtney Upshaw is worth $10m a year?

2) Courtney Upshaw is not as good of a player as High so with him joining the team the defense is now worse.

Hightower was paid 2.5M last year though. Are you thinking of next year?
