Maybe I am missing something that the rest of you are seeing, but I wonder if you're not reading a bit too much into this? What's the big deal? All Belichick and the Pats care about is that the injury to Gronk wasn't nearly as severe as we thought on Sunday night. That's huge! Now you've got to properly manage the injury. He's one of the most important keys to our postseason chances, as Belichick has mentioned in the past. Why wouldn't they play it cautiously with him?
As I've mentioned before, since they ruled him out so early this week, one would have a hard time imagining how he'd suddenly be able to practice only 72 hours later on Wednesday; therefore, I think it's always been safe to assume that he's going to miss the Texans game as well. Once you get past the Texans game we have TEN...at home. Why not let him heal up yet another week and make sure that he's 100 percent? This seems like a no-brainer.
The only real question then becomes whether or not you'd want (or need, depending upon the seeding battle) to bring him back in one of the last 2 divisional games to end the season. We don't know what the situation will be in terms of where we stand, how much the starters will play, and all of those factors. That tells me that there may be a decent chance that we don't even bring him back for much before the playoffs, if at all. He doesn't need to knock the rust off as displayed by his 3 TDs in the season opener, but Belichick may want to get him some limited reps towards the end of the year.
