And how can the players not feel they have the discretion to call a time out to get out of an obvious terrible play?????

(Actually, taking delay of game is better than a TO in that situation, but I'd understand a non-Pats player not having the guts to make that particular choice.)

Don't play the poor sucker....er player... for that.

Pagano was STANDING THERE 5 feet away from the 9 guys who were lined up illegally - NOT ON THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE.

d'ya think HE could have called a TO at that moment?

The whole thing boggles the mind.

.

The Buttfumble was funnier and the Snapfu was dumber. So it's a toss up and strongly depends on how we're grading each.

I agree. Even so, if it were the Patriots or some other well-coached team, the guy in the "QB" role would probably have called a TO anyway. Patriots players have the discretion to go against what they're coached to do; the onus is just on them to be correct in the decision.

My favorites:

"Go on and cash in your ticket if you had Brandon Bolden getting a sack tonight"
Seems it should be a sack stat-wise but it wasn't recorded as one.

You know how people were wishing we could hang 70+ points on the Colts? That's not really needed. We have already done the "beat the colts in blowouts" thingy. It's boring now. In any case, people will just complain that the Pats are running up the score again. This is the best outcome. The Colts made a fool of themselves and this is the main talking point. People are less likely to think of deflategate when they hear Pats Colts. They now think... SNAPFU. We need this to happen. Remember.... we remember the painful loss to the Jets in the playoffs. But everyone just remembers the buttfumble. It's glorious.

Snapfu may be the worst play, but I still think the buttfumble is funnier, so I have to bow out of the poll. I feel as if I'm being asked to choose a favorite child ( and I wrote that without having read Patchick's post)

I prefer the spontaneity and pure hilarity of Buttfumble to the contrived, weirdness of Snapfu. I don't know who coined the term Buttfumble, but within just a couple of hours, every NFL fan referred to Buttfumble by name. It's fitting that the naming of the planned, bizarre gaffe that was last nights fake punt is so deliberate. Sure, hardcore NFL fans will remember Snapfu for decades, but Buttfumble will be universally known by casual fans for generations.

Exactly.

In the context of Deflategate, what will be now part of the picture remembered by the nation (especially those not inclined to be everyday football watchers) is the VISUAL ineptitude and Barney Fife-ness of the main accuser.

Don't forget, longterm, visuals are everything. And The VISUAL of the Colts doing something so outrageously stupid trying to outfox Belichick, is something that adds to the frame of the whole story.

Basically, the Colts feel a need to pull out a grenade with their shaky little hands every time they play the Patriots.

And Belichick and the Patriots are simply Cool Hand Luke , keep their heads, assess the situation, study up on physics, hold Mona Lisa Vito press conferences, don't lose focus and STILL WIN a SB over the Legion of Boom......or stay in their lanes, keep their heads, don't panic and easily tackle the confused Colt Anderson to take over 1st down at the Indianapolis 23 yard line to eventually score the winning points.

.

How can anything beat the Buttfumble? The quarterback ran into his lineman's butt and fumbled, leading to a touchdown for the Patriots. I never laughed so hard in my life. The Snapfu (someone needs to come up with a better name) was surrealistically stupid but nowhere near as hilarious.

By the way, Pagano should be fired.

Might have to tune into MNF early tonight, even with their Patriot hate that has to be the c'mon man of the week. Bet it makes worst of the week until start of next season like buttfumble.

Shmessy sorry I can't vote because I see it as tacit support for the name Snapfu; has to be a more condescending name for the play yet to be discovered. The name Buttfumble achieved that perfectly.

Also, I've heard that the Colts don't know who yelled "hut, hut", does anyone know if it was in fact one of the Patriots who yelled it? That would just be beautiful if that were the case.

What is the name snapfu even about? Is there a joke I'm missing about the -fu part?

Context.

The visual of the Buttfumble is funnier. But Rex survived 2.5 more seasons in his job. Hell, even Fireman Ed is back in the fold this year.

Whether it is next week or sometime in January, Pagano and/or Grigson are gone - - and THIS moment will be the video replayed over and over and over again during the reports.

The meaning of Snapfu is far larger - - especially given the psychology of Framegate and the fighting between Grigson-Pagano.

Visually, you're right. Meaningfulness, however, Snapfu by a mile and it isn't even that close.

Doesn't matter.

The important thing is who should have called "TIMEOUT!!!"

I would imagine it was the Head Coach who was standing there for 12 seconds in that video (head to the left of the 4th down marker) 5 feet away from his NINE players who were lined up illegally.

But that's just me.

Ryan Hannable?@RyanHannable
Colts P Pat McAfee's face following the botched fake punt says it all

I think the more people read about what happened in that play, the more people will understand how Snapfu (and, yes I agree an even better name can be conjured) is FAR AND AWAY more devastating to the team that foisted it on the football world. But yes, I do love the Buttfumble.

The only way context is significant for Snapfu is if there's fallout. If Pagano is fired as a result (as he arguably should be) then I'll probably agree with you. Otherwise it was, as I said, just a surrealistically stupid play.
