Wilfork already told the team to go pound sand, and he took his ball and went home. Now, if he doesn't return to the team, will we see Kraft break out the "It's the agent's fault" nonsense again?
I'm curious. What would you do with a 350 pound, 32 year old player due $11.5 million this year, the final year of his contract, and coming off IR due to a major Achilles tendon injury? I'm not sure there is a 'playbook' for that scenario.
What we don't know as fans, 6 months removed from the injury, is
(1) Can Wilfork demonstrate any football ability at this point?;
(2) Has he lost weight?; and
(3) Is there any reasonable probability he can play at close to his former level?
The Pats management would be crucified by many, likely you included, if they pay $11.5 million for a rehab year in which Wilfork doesn't play and, worse, if he recovers and the Pats then lose his 33 year old version to free agency. I would be very surprised to see Big Vince thanking the Pats for the $18 million in vacation pay and reducing his salary demands next year in gratitude.
That leaves the options as outright release, release and restructure, extend or trade. If you want to critique the Pats, it would appear wise to have those answers above in hand. Otherwise, let me sell you a Ferrari for $180,000, site unseen. It sure looks like a Ferrari, but it may or may not have an engine included in which case it would be completely worthless if your purpose was to buy a car you can drive. I don't see Vince as any different if he lacks a leg to push off on.
I still hope this situation resolves as Vince is one of my favorites. Given Bianca's chatty nature, I suspect the silence is a good thing as I cannot see her remaining quiet if the bridge was completely burned.
