Pats and Wilfork close to a deal for an extension?

Wilfork already told the team to go pound sand, and he took his ball and went home. Now, if he doesn't return to the team, will we see Kraft break out the "It's the agent's fault" nonsense again?

I'm curious. What would you do with a 350 pound, 32 year old player due $11.5 million this year, the final year of his contract, and coming off IR due to a major Achilles tendon injury? I'm not sure there is a 'playbook' for that scenario.

What we don't know as fans, 6 months removed from the injury, is

(1) Can Wilfork demonstrate any football ability at this point?;
(2) Has he lost weight?; and
(3) Is there any reasonable probability he can play at close to his former level?

The Pats management would be crucified by many, likely you included, if they pay $11.5 million for a rehab year in which Wilfork doesn't play and, worse, if he recovers and the Pats then lose his 33 year old version to free agency. I would be very surprised to see Big Vince thanking the Pats for the $18 million in vacation pay and reducing his salary demands next year in gratitude.

That leaves the options as outright release, release and restructure, extend or trade. If you want to critique the Pats, it would appear wise to have those answers above in hand. Otherwise, let me sell you a Ferrari for $180,000, site unseen. It sure looks like a Ferrari, but it may or may not have an engine included in which case it would be completely worthless if your purpose was to buy a car you can drive. I don't see Vince as any different if he lacks a leg to push off on.

I still hope this situation resolves as Vince is one of my favorites. Given Bianca's chatty nature, I suspect the silence is a good thing as I cannot see her remaining quiet if the bridge was completely burned.

He gave Louis Vasquez a lot of trouble in the Broncos game as shown in the video.

I know most of you hate PFF but

3rd-highest of any DT since his Wk 13 debut RT @PFF Patriots DT Sealver Siliga is grading at +7.2 on his 109 run snaps

PFF simply proves that anyone can start a website. Their "GRADES" are meaningless and useless.

He certainly looked good in the majority of that video, however it strikes me more as a highlight real than anything.

I like some of there writers like Steve Palazzolo, but there grades outside of Oline/Dline are terrible.

Except he said the exact same thing during the last contract negotiations, which ultimately ended in Wilfork signing with the team:

Kraft hopeful Wilfork contract gets done - The Boston Globe

He also said he wanted welker to be a Patriot for life.

I'm actually a big fan of Kraft but he can be full of sh.t at times, however that just goes with the territory. Imo he belongs in the Hall of Fame for his work saving football as well as saving the patriots and making the key decisions that turned them into an all time great franchise. He's as far from the cheap bastard some portray him as an owner can be and really is all about winning, however he still does say some dumb sh.t at times, especially when he's drunk.

If ivan doesnt like it, something about it must be worthwhile.

Most of clips were just plays he was run at. I am way to lazy to look for "highlight plays"

well he looks silly throwing a temper tantrum. he was great but reality is a biatchh. I guess pats wont release him untilthere is no other option available. also they remember what he did during his last contract negotiations, so this time they have him by the "proverbial" balls.

instead of dealing with reality, if he behaves like a petulent child, quoting Deus, WV can go pound sand

They once named Kareem McKenzie the best player in football and said tom Brady was the 32nd best player in football when he was unanimous MVP. Sorry, I have zero respect for them and think that they are completely useless. It's always a shame to see anyone cite them as credible. Woody Paige does it frequently, that tells me all I need to know.

If you don't know who Woody Paige is just google "drunken stupor," you should see his name frequently.

Well, if Wilfork leaves and Louis Nix is on the board but the Pats don't grab him, that would say a lot about what BB thinks of Siliga.

Thanks, coming from someone who thinks they could do a better job running the Patriots than Belichick it's high praise.

Sorry to interupt your sh.t fest on Wilfork, I know that's a serious rite of passage for you guys every time a player doesn't heed to the party line. Now get back to your crapping, I'm going to go watch some music,

I don't think Belichick makes his draft decisions that way but i see what you are driving at.

It's "bastard"... "he's"... "riddance"... replace "cheaper" with "less money". Cheap refers to the quality of something. Inexpensive refers to price/cost(s).

That's not counting the missing punctuation marks & capitals.

Folks here talk a lot of smack, and that's fine. Still and all, we try to stay within the bounds of reasonable grammar.

Pound sand

I think that vince has approached this situation incorrectly. I'm one of the people who would like to see him stay a patriot for life, but 11 million dollars is too high a cost based on what we saw to start last year, and how he ended it on IR.

I'm hopeful that they can work it out, But Siligia played very much like someone who is going to be starting here for at least a few years.

Well, I know he did that with Welker, but hten again, i agree with that assessment. That negotiation never had a chance because of ridiculous expectations set early on (and bad feelings between Welker and BB, apparently).

Seems kind of standard in the NFL. Teams give large long-term contract...will not pay out last year...players get mad...teams in damage control because they know it's a business, but some fans won't accept that...

Wasn't taking a shot ya there, champ, just asking.

I don't want to get back into the Welker stuff. As for the others, Manning was a special case, and Bailey had been skating by for a couple of years. Wilfork was an All-Pro in 2012, so it's not as if he'd been coasting to the end of his deal. sorry if you got a bit put off by the "champ" thing. I should have gone with dude, or something, because "champ" does look like a jab in that context. I was just bored and want to add more than a plain line.

Mea Culpa, and I think that's the second time I've done that in answering one of your posts in recent months, so another apology on top of that one. I'll try to be more on top of that moving forward.

I've talked about this before. They have multiple options, and they are all reasonable.

  • Release - **** move, but reasonable
  • Extend with new money - Risky, sentimental (and potentially stupid) move, but reasonable
  • Status quo - a bit constricting in terms of FA moves, but certainly reasonable

The best solution, in terms of protecting both sides, is an extension that pushes money into next year and offers legitimate compensation for VW's talents, but doesn't kick in any (or at least much) new money unless VW shows the ability to play on the field. I just don't know how they'd go about crafting that contract in a way that passed the sniff test, and I don't care to research it. Miguel may be more interested in doing so at some point.

Vince's cost is not $11 million. Vince's cost is a perfectly reasonable $7.5 million. And your choosing to ignore an entire career because of 2+ games isn't really a good thing in a case like this.
