I believe that lifestyle lends itself to other problems. Many, many sexual diseases which make you sick physically which does not help your mental state. The type of sex they have is not healthy. Gay men on average have an extremely high number of sexual partners. That takes a toll on mental health and how you view yourself. So that level of promiscuity probably lends itself to drugs, and alcohol. Possibly to hide from the emptiness and disappointment in yourself for your life choices.

Edit: Part of it may be that their partners cheat a lot on them? I don't know, but with dozens of sexual partners, I could see that being a big factor in suicides, drug and alcohol abuse.

And we can control them to a large degree. It's how some gays go back to a hetero lifestyle. learning how to control what your eyes fixate upon and what your mind dwells on.
Any sexual fantasy or fetish is strengthened by thinking about it or acting on it. And they can be eliminated or greatly suppressed by guarding what your eyes see, and what your mind dwells upon. Psychology 101.
