He is the best PR on the team...he will be back there
Eric Decker is an UFA after this season, and Demaryius and Julius Thomas are both UFAs after 2014. They'll have to worry about locking up their own receivers before they even consider adding a guy like Edelman. As it stands, my guess is that Welker will be a cap casualty before the end of his contract.
My guess would be anywhere from $3-5M per year with incentives built in to protect against future injury, since this was the first full season he's been able to stay healthy. That's solid pay for a WR3.
Now that is an interesting way to put it. If Welker will be a cap casualty before the end of his contract, then he will be cut in the next few weeks. This is the last year of his contract. What I am suggesting is that Edelman would cost Denver less than Welker, and the their message board can have a Welker discussion for a year.

Yes, $3-5M is solid pay for a #3 receiver. Someone will be convinced that he is a solid #2 receiver who might catch 100 passes for 1000 yards. Didn't we have this discussion last year?
Edelman was actually a WR1 by default this season. In part due to his knowledge and longevity in the offense, in part due to Brady having to break in a few rookies, and in part due to Amendola aggravating the groin injury and missing time followed by never being the same receiver we saw Week 1. Ideally, Edelman is everything you want in a WR3. Dobson may elevate himself to anywhere from a WR2 to a WR1, and that leaves the team still searching for big bodied, athletic threat that can kill defenses outside the numbers. Whether that guy is already on the team (Boyce? Thompkins?) or the team will make a move for him through FA (Nicks? Sanders?) or the draft remains to be seen.
His value on special teams makes this somewhat harder to predict. I think he gets around $4 mm/year and if the Pats don't sign him, I would expect the Texans, Colts, Dolphins, Jets and Buffalo would be in the mix for the AFC and Cards, Seattle and SF in the NFC.
Our major hope of keeping Edelman is that Brady wants him to stay and they have the same agent. However, this kind of influence can only go so far. This is Edelman's first opportunity for real money. Edelman is essentially where good players are after their rookie contracts. There is no guarantee that Edelman will have another chance to sign a lucrative long-term contract with serious guaranteed monies. To put it another way, a guarantee of $6M translates into about $160K a year for the rest of his life.
Wow no respect for mini-tron. He's going to be our #1 WR and make the pro bowl next year. The guy is amazing and in his prime now.
Please don't post another stupid GIF if you respond
Do you guys think he'll re-sign for something like 3-4 years at 5m a piece? I'm kind of nervous offering him too much money because this is the first time Edelman's been healthy for a full season.
The Texans might value Edelman highly.
$3-$5M per year is plenty of respect for Edelman. If he's our WR1 again next year, though, the team is in trouble. I posted that GIF because what you said in that thread was so mind bogglingly ******ed that it didn't deserve words. So here, a GIF for you...
