Wes Welker concussion: Broncos player evaluated for neck injury, too
Broncos put Rahim Moore on injured reserve with designation to return - The Denver Post
Welker, the Broncos’ star slot receiver, had a nice catch-and-run for 20 yards with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter when he took a high-low blast from two Kansas City defenders. Welker’s head was snapped back and it was his neck that the Broncos’ medical team evaluated. Aware there was a collision, Broncos doctors did engage with Welker and at that time no concussion symptoms were apparent.
On the sideline, Welker shook off the neck and the Broncos cleared him to go back in. He made a 9-yard catch to finish the Broncos’ drive that ended with a Matt Prater field goal. It was after that series that the Broncos’ medical team became aware Welker was experiencing possible concussion-like symptoms.
At that point the Broncos’ team followed the NFL’s concussion-mandated protocol. And it was decided that Welker should not return to the game.
Don’t be surprised if Welker shows up on the injury report Wednesday with a neck/concussion injury.
To the Broncos’ medical team’s credit, it has erred on the side of caution with concussions this season – Chris Harris couldn’t believe he was held out of the second half at Dallas for what he said was a “mild, mild” concussion.
Again, Welker was treated for a neck injury on the field. Once the Broncos’ medical team noticed symptoms of Welker’s concussion, he was pulled immediately.

Broncos put Rahim Moore on injured reserve with designation to return - The Denver Post
The free safety had been a Broncos "iron man" this season, playing in 98.8 percent of the team's defensive snaps going into their game Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. No other Denver defensive player had approached that type of durability.
As a point of comparison, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had played in 97.6 percent of the offensive snaps.
It took an uncommon disorder to knock out Moore. He underwent surgery Monday morning to repair lateral compartment syndrome, a condition that was restricting the blood flow in the muscles of his lower left leg.
The Broncos had little choice Tuesday but to place Moore on injured reserve with a designated to return. They replaced him on their 53-man roster by signing veteran safety Michael Huff.
"Obviously it hurts to lose Rahim," said John Elway, the Broncos' head of football operations. "He's been playing so well, (and) to have this happen to him is terrible."
Moore will be sidelined without practice for at least six weeks. It's possible he could return for the final regular season against the Oakland Raiders as a tuneup for the playoffs.
Oakland is where Huff made his mark in the NFL. He was the No. 7 overall draft pick from Texas in 2006, benched in 2008, a Pro Bowler in 2010 and released to free agency after the 2012 season.
Huff, 30, was signed by the Baltimore Ravens in March to replace Ed Reed but was benched after the breakout game of Broncos tight end Julius Thomas in the NFL's season-opening game.
The Ravens released Huff three weeks ago. The Broncos still are expected to have Mike Adams replace Moore as the starting free safety alongside strong safety Duke Ihenacho. In time, Huff might compete with Adams and nickel safety David Bruton.
