Wes Welker concussion: Broncos player evaluated for neck injury, too

Welker, the Broncos’ star slot receiver, had a nice catch-and-run for 20 yards with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter when he took a high-low blast from two Kansas City defenders. Welker’s head was snapped back and it was his neck that the Broncos’ medical team evaluated. Aware there was a collision, Broncos doctors did engage with Welker and at that time no concussion symptoms were apparent.

On the sideline, Welker shook off the neck and the Broncos cleared him to go back in. He made a 9-yard catch to finish the Broncos’ drive that ended with a Matt Prater field goal. It was after that series that the Broncos’ medical team became aware Welker was experiencing possible concussion-like symptoms.

At that point the Broncos’ team followed the NFL’s concussion-mandated protocol. And it was decided that Welker should not return to the game.

Don’t be surprised if Welker shows up on the injury report Wednesday with a neck/concussion injury.

To the Broncos’ medical team’s credit, it has erred on the side of caution with concussions this season – Chris Harris couldn’t believe he was held out of the second half at Dallas for what he said was a “mild, mild” concussion.

Again, Welker was treated for a neck injury on the field. Once the Broncos’ medical team noticed symptoms of Welker’s concussion, he was pulled immediately.

Broncos put Rahim Moore on injured reserve with designation to return - The Denver Post

The free safety had been a Broncos "iron man" this season, playing in 98.8 percent of the team's defensive snaps going into their game Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. No other Denver defensive player had approached that type of durability.

As a point of comparison, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning had played in 97.6 percent of the offensive snaps.

It took an uncommon disorder to knock out Moore. He underwent surgery Monday morning to repair lateral compartment syndrome, a condition that was restricting the blood flow in the muscles of his lower left leg.

The Broncos had little choice Tuesday but to place Moore on injured reserve with a designated to return. They replaced him on their 53-man roster by signing veteran safety Michael Huff.

"Obviously it hurts to lose Rahim," said John Elway, the Broncos' head of football operations. "He's been playing so well, (and) to have this happen to him is terrible."

Moore will be sidelined without practice for at least six weeks. It's possible he could return for the final regular season against the Oakland Raiders as a tuneup for the playoffs.

Oakland is where Huff made his mark in the NFL. He was the No. 7 overall draft pick from Texas in 2006, benched in 2008, a Pro Bowler in 2010 and released to free agency after the 2012 season.

Huff, 30, was signed by the Baltimore Ravens in March to replace Ed Reed but was benched after the breakout game of Broncos tight end Julius Thomas in the NFL's season-opening game.

The Ravens released Huff three weeks ago. The Broncos still are expected to have Mike Adams replace Moore as the starting free safety alongside strong safety Duke Ihenacho. In time, Huff might compete with Adams and nickel safety David Bruton.

As was the case last week with Talib, the fact that Gregory is talking is cause for optimism when it comes to possibly playing this week.

Is it time to bring McCourty down to CB one last time?

Defense 1:

S: McCourty
S: Gregory
CB: Talib
CB: Arrington
CB: Ryan

Defense 2:

S: Gregory
S: Harmon
CB: Talib
CB: McCourty
CB: Arrington

I like McCourty better at safety in this game.
If you play McCourty at safety (and assuming a nickel base which is a nobrainer) we have 4 dbs with corner skills on the field. If you play him at corner you have 2 safeties that do not have corner skills.
My game plan would be to play zone, take away the short stuff and make Manning beat you down the field. I want McCourty back there to defend that.

I also prefer McCourty at Safety if Talib can play. If he can't we'd probably have to make the move. But with Talib, Arrington, Ryan, we have 3 CB who can play decently and still give us McCourty who should be able to make some plays; if we can force Manning to go downfield there should be plays to be made with those ducks that come out of his hand.

Is Gregory actually gonna play on Sunday?

Is Gregory actually gonna play on Sunday?
I'm betting he does. He will have broken his thumb 21 days ago come Sunday. This is the first time he's practiced since and he was talking to reporters which is usually not "allowed" until a player is ready to play.

I prefer McCourty at FS too wouldn't want D. Thomas or E. Decker turning him everywhere and loose. We should play Cover 3 - 2 deep or Cover 4 to keep things infront of us that bend dont break and let them pay when they catch it.

Defense 1, all the way. McCourty and Arrington can clean up a lot of what the CB's miss. I like Talib on DT, Arrington on Welker, and Ryan on Decker. Decker doesn't worry me nearly as much as DT or Welker and Ryan with safety help over the top should be able to handle matters.

Is Gregory actually gonna play on Sunday?
I expect he will. I read some (unnamed) Patriot official saying that Gregory is one of those "all in" types who'll play with pretty much any injury they'll let him on the field with.

Boy, it'd be nice if Julius Thomas decided to rest a week.

He makes an enormous difference out there, and will pose us some of the tougher matchup problems of the day.

Great news on dennard practicing...I wonder if that means he has a chance to play?

Either way it seems like talib and Gregory will be a go at least

Arringon on welker (if he goes didn't practice today)
Talib on thomas

Yeah, that's what I was saying over at the Broncos forums. He's the wild card, especially with Mayo done for the year.

Injury report: Wes Welker, Peyton Manning and Julius Thomas did not practice for Broncos | masslive.com

Denver quarterback Peyton Manning (ankle), wide receiver Wes Welker (concussion/neck) and tight ends Julius Thomas (knee) and Joel Dressen (knee) all were forced to sit with injuries. There's little doubt that Manning plays, and interim head coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday that the team is still holding out hope that Welker can play.

Peyton Manning not at Broncos practice; Michael Huff, John Boyett debut - The Denver Post

For the fifth time of 2013 — and of his Broncos career — Peyton Manning was not present at the team's practice on Wednesday.

The quarterback has been battling ankle issues, although he's yet to miss a game. Interim coach Jack Del Rio said he doesn't want to characterize Wednesdays as always being Manning's rest day, but said that's simply how he chose to approach things this week. However, Manning missing practice shouldn't be a sign of anything more serious; it's just the Broncos' attempt to keep their quarterback fresh and ready for Sunday.

Also missing from Wednesday's practice were tight ends Julius Thomas and Joel Dreessen and receiver Wes Welker. Thomas is day-to-day with a knee injury, and Welker is battling a neck injury and a concussion. Both players sustained their injuries during Sunday's victory over Kansas City.

Due to his concussion, Welker must be cleared both by the Broncos' physicians and an independent physician before returning to practice. There is no standard timetable for returning; each player is different.

"I really haven't had a lot of dialogue with Wes," Del Rio said. "He's a competitive player, so I'm sure he's looking forward to playing, seeing his former teammates."

There were also two new faces at practice Wednesday: safeties Michael Huff and John Boyett. Both were signed — Boyett to the practice squad — to compensate for the loss of Rahim Moore, who was placed on injured reserve. Moore must sit for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery for compartment syndrome Monday.

Safety Mike Adams will likely absorb the bulk of Moore's playing time.

New England Patriots practice report: Steve Gregory, Alfonzo Dennard return | masslive.com

Either the New England Patriots’ secondary is getting healthier or there are some smokescreens taking shape at Gillette Stadium.

All members of New England’s banged up secondary were on the field during practice Wednesday, including Steve Gregory (thumb), Alfonzo Denanrd (knee), Aqib Talib (hip) and Kyle Arrington (groin).

Gregory and Dennard did not play Monday night against the Carolina Panthers, and Talib and Arrington both had their injuries flare up during the game. He is not expected to play this weekend.

Dennard reportedly underwent a minor meniscus procedure on his knee over the weekend and was spotted moving gingerly by reporters during Wednesday’s practice.

Tight end Michael Hoomanawanui was the only player missing during the session. He suffered a knee injury Monday night.

I wonder with the very cold weather and the Broncos playing the Chiefs the next week if they sit Peyton down Sunday night.
Will Sunday night be the coldest temps Peyton has had to face since he signed with the Broncos ?

Bahahahahaha are you serious? That has to be a joke.

No way, not in this game.

Not a chance.

How Manning's throws over 15 yards look . . . that's a legitimate question.

Manning has missed practice like 3 weeks in a row

Yeah, Manning will sit out and Y. A. Tittle will fill in. Not a chance.

Dennard is not only going to miss the Broncos game due to having a minor knee surgery today, but he's also expected to miss at least the next game or two after that. There's no way in hell that Dennard is going to play for another 2-3 games.

Everyone's pretty much expecting Welker to play, which is exactly what I thought when they were trying to make a big deal about it on Sunday night.

Welker in a bracketed coverage scheme with Arrington/LB may help to limit him somewhat (hopefully).

The major wildcard and player with the most ability to do damage vs us is their TE Julius Thomas. He has the potential to have a field day, and that's if Talib is actually able to play well enough to help to limit D.Thomas.
