Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

I know who he is. Sure, we'd all be ignoring Ed Smith. That's because he'd be Ed Smith. The Patriots would have ignored Junior Smith, too. They didn't ignore Junior Seau.

That's the point.

Junior Seau is the exception to the rule. For every Seau we get three or four guys like Shaun Ellis, Haynesworth, Chad Ochocinco, etc. who end up being exactly what they looked like before they got here - washed up.

No, Rob... but, since you want to make this personal:

My M.O. is to evaluate moves, regardless of whether the homers/haters agree with my takes. Your M.O. is to disagree with me, be wrong, and then refuse to acknowledge it. In this case, safety was a huge need, and it could have been solved moving forward, on the cheap, by making the draft pick. Instead, they chose a project who's weak on-ball skills and lack of size mean he can't play the line, and who's coverage ability is pretty much just hope as of now.

In other words, they drafted a coverage LB who can't cover right now, when they needed safety help. But at least they pissed away money on Adrian Wilson!

Whether it is your MO or not, to say any draft pick is a huge mistake 9 games into his career is silly. He was drafted to replace Spikes in the starting line up when he leaves next year. He was drafted as a guy to develop who has elite potential. Unfortunately, Mayo going down changed that.

Hell, I look at a guy like Dee Miliner who has been awful and injury prone and a top ten pick and I wouldn't label him a "huge screw up" yet. He is looking like a major bust, but he could turn it around. And unlike Collins, he was deemed NFL ready when drafted.

I know what Gregory has been doing. As a player who was brought in to range in the back, he was a miserable failure. As a player who's role is being limited to run support and some help in the back, he's been better. That's the point about him being protected by the other 3 members of the secondary. If Dennard/Talib/McCourty wasn't a good enough trio to limit the outside/downfield passing game, Gregory would be getting exposed again this season.

Gregory has been pretty solid even with Talib being out. He is not an elite safety or anything like that, but he is far better than you give him credit for.

Harmon's skillset should allow him to replicate Gregory's game sufficiently to keep things running smoothly in the back four, at least for the most part. If it doesn't, we'll be back to wondering what might have been with Ed Reed. Unfortunately, even if Harmon can do this, it will still leave the Patriots vulnerable, as Wilson is likely to start getting more playing time. Tavon had better put on his big boy pants.

I said I wouldn't be upset if they got Reed. I just don't think he has anything left.

As for Wilson, you will see more of him this week. Gregory is very possibly back for the Broncos game. It doesn't look like he had surgery. That means he should be able to play with a broken thumb three weeks after breaking it. I bet if the Pats were facing the Broncos this week that Gregory would be practicing right now.

Hey guys, here's a great article on duron harmon.

Leftover Observations: Patriots Rookie Safety Duron Harmon vs. Steelers | NEPatriotsDraft.com - 2014 NFL Draft

It's only 1 game, but hopefully harmon can stay at the strong safety positin for the rest of the year and leave gregory as the 3rd safety. Gregory's ability now is probably better than ed reed's.

The good news about this report is most of his negatives are rookie mistakes and can be eliminated with more experience.

Just my 2 cents.

A huge mistake is drafting a high first round CB that cant stay on the field.

Drafting a coverage LB in the lower 2nd round with the expectation that he will develop in time to take over for when you potentially lose a current starter, is not a huge mistake, its a potential mistake that is WAY to early to call.

Complaining we didn't get ed reed now, or even at the start of the season is like complaining that we didn't sign Asamoguha after the 49's cut him. He clearly has nothing left, the only reason the jets signed him is because they are the funking jets and rex ryan is the coach. if it had been anyone else as hc even the jets pass on him.

Reed's a great pickup by the Jets. They have a kiddie corps at safety - three guys with less than two seasons of experience and Dawan Landry who is a solid, not great safety. At 5-4 and a very manageable schedule down the stretch (Bills, Dolphins 2X, Raiders, Browns, Ravens and Panthers), the Jets look like a favorite for a wild card.

Reed is an experienced veteran in the secondary the Jets lacked. (Cromartie is a veteran, but an immature punk.) The Jets have a terrific but very young defense. Pace and Harris provide veteran leadership at linebacker, but the DL and secondary lacked senior leadership.

It seems like they actually have a brain down there this year.

I'm really annoyed with the implosion of the Dolphins. The Jets basically get two wins for just showing up against Miami, the Raiders are pathetic, the Bills are tough but couldn't close an envelope if you licked it for them, and the Ravens and Browns are at about the same level as the Jets. The Panthers is the only sure loss on that schedule.

The friggin' Jets could go 10-6 or 11-5 if they catch a few breaks (like Shove-it-where-the sun-don't-shine-gate.)

And like clockwork, Jets fans are loving this:

BAM! There it is. Ed is clearly a Rex guy. We're gearing up for a playoff run. Doesn't mean we'll make it but with a players coming back from injury/suspension and adding a guy like Reed the Jets are squarely focused on getting to January. F the rebuilding BS, F the #32 power ranking.....our eye is on the prize.

Anyone still think Rex and Idzik aren't on the same page? Anyone think Idzik is already looking at 2014 coaching candidates? He just got Rex a guy that Rex wants and we're going to make the big push!

Meanwhile, this team is making it. This is the second biggest "win" over the Pats in their franchise history.

Nah. The Patriots don't need Ed Reed. The Patriots are all about getting younger and faster, especially on defense. Don't sweat this acquisition. It just ******s the growth of the Jets secondary, and puts an old guy back there that QBs will pick on. There are good reasons why the Ravens moved on and the Texans released him. I'd rather see Harmon get some minutes and develop along side McCourty than worry about Reed getting torched by Newton or Manning.

To be fair, it's hard to disagree with what you quoted.

Now that he is a Jet, he is by definition the worst safety to ever play football. Glad we didn't get him!

Sounds like he's trying to collect another (in addition to the Texans') paycheck with as little work as possible. Whether the Pats wanted him or not (there are conflicting reports), Reed specifically said that he didn't want to go to NE and try to learn a new system. That's really the deciding factor in what should be (but very well may not be) his last season ever in the NFL?

When you're coming to the team in week 11, it kinda makes sense. There just isn't a whole lot of time left to learn system.

Ed Reed -- Patriots made contact - ESPN Boston

Before we start the pats are cheap talk...

I think some posters/fans tend to overlook the fact that learning a new system isn't exactly an instant kind of thing. I'm not necessarily suggesting that Reed couldn't have picked it up, but this does go hand in hand with my thoughts yesterday that he'd likely be seeing some negative plays and growing pains for the next month or so. That, coupled with the fact that Gregory isn't expected to miss more than a couple of games (he's already going to be 15 days into it when MNF comes) says to me that we probably didn't need him too badly.

I don't think certain positions are quite as difficult as others, but there are a handful of positions on both sides of the ball that are more complex than others, and would take a little while to totally pick up and have success with.

The downside of course, is that we'll have to rely on Wilson a bit more in the next couple of games, and that is what everyone's concern is--which goes along with the thought that Reed could have provided a better S3 option at the moment.

That is way overplaying it IMO ... it's not that big a deal.

However ... it feels like off season again
when we have to hear the jets blowhards proclaim themselves Super Bowl bound.

its over with the ravens so the jets is the perfect fit its the system his been in his whole career, he only has 7 games and maybe the playoffs to get respect back for what so far has been a bad season for a HOF safety,

smart move by reed to sign with the jets and we will see if it works out well on the jets side

1.) Drafting a project LB when there are quality safety prospects available to fix an obvious, and 'immediate' (meaning year one, not necessarily game one), problem at safety is lousy draft strategy. It's sort of like drafting a 5th round safety prospect in the 2nd round when there were other positions with major needs that could have been filled with better prospects. Hey, why does that sound familiar?

2.) I'm not complaining about Ed Reed. I noted that one thing that the team would want to look at would be potential improvement of his hip moving forward, and I noted that he's clearly not playing up to snuff right now. I think it would have been a harmless signing and, therefore, a good one but not a no-brainer by any stretch, and it's only going to be an issue for most people if Reed improves and/or Wilson/Harmon flame(s) out. If Reed flames out in NY, or if Harmon/Wilson get(s) the job done in NE, it'll be a complete non-story.

Let the 17 page pissing contest commence! :rocker:

Guess that leaves me out. I only have enough stamina to go 4 or 5 pages. Perhaps if an adversary were to take the top, I could go 6 or 7.

No, let's adopt a realistic perspective here. He's the greatest safety ever to play football who's a shell of his former self, now playing for the most morally bankrupt franchise in NFL history. The fact we didn't get him ranks a solidly resounding "meh."

Jamie Collins was a highly rated prospect. He was 60th overall on CBS/NFLDraftScout. He got points off for being raw and on the worst team in college football. His ceiling/potential was well worth the pick IMO.

He got $6 million for 7 games with the Texans. I think he was smart to come back.

He should have retired after the Texans released him too. He seems pretty convinced that his struggles were the Texans' fault for not using him correctly rather than his skills though. He might be one of those delusional former superstars who cannot accept the game passed him bye.
My thoughts on the matter can be summed up with the following comment; it's a shame to watch one of the best ever at the position go on for one season too many.
