Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Pat Kirwin commented on Reed on Sirius this afternoon. Spent time with him in the Texan's training camp. Talked to a Raven's teammate of Reed. Kirwin's assessment: Reed is D-U-N, done. Finished. Nothing in the tank. Just signed with Houston to pocket their $5 million.

The problem I see with Reed is that his style of play doesn't lend itself to going in for a few snaps a game. You have to build your defense around what he does. And, he can't do THAT anymore.

Wasn't he injured in texans training camp? So i don't know how much play kirwin would have seen from him.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

And to continue the James Bond / Ed Reed car analogies...

I say it doesn't matter so much what kind of car Reed is.. we just need Q to go to work and give him a right jolly tune-up.

Yes. Reed was still "rehabbing" during training camp. According to Kirwin, he was just hanging out, shooting the breeze with the Sirius radio folk, and enjoying life (and his five million). I remember listening to Kirwin's interview of Reed back in the Texan's training camp, and thinking, "this sounds like a guy who isn't planning to start practicing any time soon..."

I can easily see why Kirwin thinks Reed was just taking the Texans' money.

Kirwin said he asked one of Reed's Baltimore teammates if he had anything left in the tank. Kirwin said the teammate just looked at him and laughed...

I get the impression that it isn't a big secret in the NFL that Reed is done.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Good post. He hasn't been able to do anything on the field this year, that's why Houston dumped him. Too many fans here are looking at his name and seeing the Ed Reed of 2012 and prior. I will only be mildly surprised if BB signs him, though. I'll be REALLY surprised if he is signed here and contributes anything significant.

It's not impossible, per se, just very unlikely. Darren Sharper was thought completely washed up in 2009, and then was pretty much exclusively the entire defense on a Super Bowl team for one glorious year before promptly falling off the face of the Earth again.

Reed was the greatest safety - and one of the greatest defensive players, period - to ever play the game in his prime... which wasn't that long ago (though he was a liability last year). But it doesn't look good, and you're taking possible development time away from a rookie.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

He just turned 35, with the proper rehab, maybe an investment for the next season, 1 year deal. SB shot.

Is he really willing to go there and play football? That we don't know, I think it's more a motivational than a physical thing.

Bring him and trade Tavon Wilson for a 7th

Bring him and trade Tavon Wilson for a 7th

What good would a 7th round pick be for a core special teams player who was taken in the 2nd round just a year ago?

We're already likely to have 4 sixth round picks this spring, along with a seventh rounder too. Those 5 picks in the last two rounds will already be somewhat of a waste, although I imagine that we'll trade one or two into future years and start the "round up" process all over until it pans out as the 3rd overall pick in the year of 2019.

Tavon Wilson looks lost in certain areas, and doesn't do anything to give us much (if any) confidence at the moment, but I wouldn't totally give up on him just yet either. I think he earns at least one more year to try and improve on his weaknesses.

OT: Ed Reed released

Sign him and make him captain for the Baltimore game.

Fair enough. My personal opinion is the reporter's making a bit of a story there. I mean what is Reed supposed to do if he has an injured hip? I thin Kirwin is reading a lot into that. He could be right but i think it's more speculation than anything.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I'm sure he's wrong from time to time, but listening to Kirwin's show every afternoon, I feel like it's closer to what you would hear in a real pro-personnel meeting than anything else in the media.

When Kirwin says a guy is done, I think there's a very good chance the guy is done....

BTW, Kirwin spent a few minutes today discussing specific formations that the Pats can use to isolate Gronkowski on the Panthers safeties (their weakness and a big matchup problem). Heads and shoulders above the talking heads nonsense on ESPN or talk radio or the newspapers.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Reed has barely played at all.

He missed the first 2 games and Phillips demoted him to back up and special teams the last 2 games. Reed was supposed to be one of the missing pieces for a Super Bowl contending Texans team that has totally imploded.

Reeds criticism of Phillips was the last straw.

Ultimate Texans » Outspokenness, lack of production lead to short stint for Ed Reed

Great story. Reed essentially started his retirement with the Texans and should head to the Maryland eastern shore to kick back and enjoy the rest of his money.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

He said not getting the necessary repetitions in the offseason program, camp and preseason was affecting him on the field.

That quote is likely to give other teams pause about bringing him on board in a limited role.

On the other hand, BB can sit down with a guy, explain what gives him pause, and wind up hiring him anyway. Corey Dillon is the classic example, even though that was a trade.

We need to sign T.O. now.

[edit] whoops, wrong thread

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I literally have no idea why people are so far against this idea. If he makes it through waivers, he comes to the Pats significantly cheaper than he came to the Texans. Gregory is injured so we need some depth regardless and, even if Reed can't supplant Harmon right away due to injury, he'd at least ensure that Tavon Wilson doesn't see significant reps if Harmon went down. If he does come in and doesn't have to play a high amount of snaps, he has time to rest up and heal what ails him in time for the playoffs, where a veteran presence in the back end could not hurt. I don't see any downside whatsoever.

To complete your metaphor of Ed Reed as Bond's Aston Martin:

It will buff out.

It's also worth taking a shot at the lottery chance the Texans misused him and the 2012 Ed Reed is still there. McCourty-2012 Reed would be so beast.

I just don't see the Texans cutting a player like Ed Reed with 5 million dollars guaranteed after JUST signing him for slight reasons. It's the canonical deal that's too good to be true.

A competitive player criticizing a 2-7 team that was picked by many to be Super Bowl contenders and that has failed before injuries to critical players? That's just crazy.

And I agree that the injury issue may possibly be a slow recovery rather than he's done. If the guy is capable of reaching 80% of what he had at the height of his career as a result of age and injury, then he will be a step up from some of the options on the Pats. Since the Texans nicely funded his season already, it's a low risk, high reward acquisition.

That doesn't answer his question of what's the downside in signing him.

Swearinger has played well, compared with the rest of Houston's defensive backfield, and Reed is more than likely still nursing an injury. Take into account what Houston was still on the hook for and it's a relative no-brainer. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have value in New England.
