Brian Hoyer foiling the Browns tank-it plans

Re: Re: OT: Brian Hoyer foiling the Browns tank-it plans

1 mistake away from sitting for a year Josh Gordon.

Make it a conditional pick then. If he plays 16 games for us wothout suspension its a fourth. Otherwise its a 7th.

If he plays 16 games for us wothout suspension and learns the offense in three days its a fourth. Otherwise its a 7th.

This is a team that once traded a 5th rounder for Albert Haynesworth, who turned out to be a complete bust. But at the time it seemed kinda smart.

I don't mind risks, as long as it's for the right price. We desperately need playmakers on our team. We can't keep feeding wins off these weak teams forever.

But I get the feeling Aaron Hernandez might have given Belichick a zero tolerance for potheads though

The team traded for Haynesworth at the end of July, where he had plenty of time to pick up their defense. The move wasn't made in the middle of the season. The position itself of DT isn't exactly rocket science even in our defense. They brought Haynesworth in to pair him next to VW and help stop the run and eat space, and even then they gave him plenty of time to try and learn some of the nuances and responsibilities of the system.

What you and anyone else are suggesting is to take a risk on the 2nd most complicated position on our entire team, outside of quarterback--in the middle of the season, so that we could then make him inactive for a month or so while he attempts to try and learn some semblance of the system here and develops some kind of chemistry with Brady....

The move if made, would be one for the future, and not one for the current season. Even Gaffney completely sucked when brought in during the season until he finally had a good game or two in the postseason. I couldn't imagine anything different from a brilliant player like Josh Gordon.

Mike Lombardi once made the famous comment that "either one of the Pats backup QB's could end up potentially being starters on an NFL team." Obviously that comment included Brian Hoyer, as he was then currently our QB2 at the time. This comment is what led many here to speculate that Lombardi and the Browns would be the team who'd part with a high pick for Mallett's services in the future.

Of course Lombardi is now experiencing some of the highs that he envisioned with those comments, so one would have to assume that any trade talks for Ryan Mallett in the future from Mike Lombardi are now pretty much out the window....and the fact that they currently have 2 firsts and 2 seconds in next year's draft proves the point even further since they'll be targeting a high pick at QB with the good draft class that is coming out in the spring. I doubt they parted with the 3rd overall player in last year's draft for any other reason other than putting themselves in position to move up and take the best 1-2 QB's available.

If Hoyer can prove to be anything close to a capable NFL starter then they just hit the jackpot, as they could then wait until a bit later on in the draft to address a young future QB next spring. This could enable them to add another important big name player on either side of the ball which could help their rebuilding state very nicely.
