Final round cuts (Non-Patriots)

Antoine Winfield, the Pro Bowl cornerback who was expected to add to an already deep Seattle secondary this season, has instead decided to call it a career.

The 36-year-old Winfield informed the Seahawks today that he plans to retire, according to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports.

OJOMO!

He has potential at DE. Cut by the Giants due to the sheer number of DEs they have I assume.

It's not hard to figure out, really. He's been lousy, for the most part.

It's hard to say what we have in Mallett, but three years in training camp (two with McDaniels) and familiarity with the playbook are valuable. We saw him with the second stringers against the Giants' starters on Thursday and it was a credible performance. I'm comfortable that the Patriots have a solid backup, but I am not convinced they have the next franchise QB.

Sorry DI,

Mallett has been just would you would expect. A very inexperienced but talented QB candidate who is making progress. Hoping he doesn't have to play this season. But he will improve next preseason just like he did now, and he should be ready by next Training Camp.

this may have been covered but hopefully the release of Dwyer increases the likelihood that Winn makes it to the PS

Word here in Pittsburgh is that the Steelers were tired of Dwyer's poor work ethic and failure to take his job seriously enough.

While it's certainly possible for any team to give him another shot, the specific reason for his cut doesn't seem to bode well for him. I'm just pissed b/c when L.Bell went down it seemed like Dwyer would get some good reps, so I took him as my 5th choice at RB in the fantasy football draft. He went from potentially starting to being cut in about a week.

I would think that Winn should be fine making it to the PS myself.

My opinion would be smack in the middle of your two thoughts, but I'd probably lean more towards goheels22002 in this instance. I agree that just his knowledge of the scheme alone make him the obvious choice at this moment in time.

I also think that Deus has a valid point too though. Mallett has underachieved so far and hasn't done much to make us feel super comfortable about the situation. I do think that he'd be a better choice than anyone else at this point, and I wouldn't condone cutting him and bringing in someone else on any level.

I think the best of both worlds situation would probably be to take a chance on a developmental QB for the practice squad, and/or take another shot in the draft next year. In the meantime we're going to have to live with Mallett as the backup for another season, if not two.

I hope you're right on Winn - despite all my Tebow talk, Winn was my binky. Was much more disappointed he and Sims got cut than Tebow. Still think he can BJGE+.

Last year, the patriots made 12 transactions between the final 53 and Game (not counting Practice Squad transactions).

This year will likely be no different, especially given that we started with 51 players. We MIGHT sign players at any of the following positions,

QB (Belichick might really want to develop a back to compete with Mallett in 2014)
TE Dan Gronkowski and Silvestri say hi
OG/C - Kline is not the answer.
DE - We could use a veteran backup.
DT - We could use a veteran backup.
LB - We could use a coverage linebacker.
CB - We could use a veteran backup.
S - We could use a veteran backup at strong safety.

Mallett has been fine. You're completely overestimating what it takes to be a backup QB. Tanney has given two chances to make NFL rosters and has failed. If he were worth bringing in as a backup, he would have already secured a spot as one.

I judge a player based on what I see, not what incompetent teams like the Cowboys and Chiefs do.

Well - I see plenty of guys who were cut today that could help the Patriots, including on the offensive and defensive line, as well as the strong safety position.

Based on these cuts that the Patriots went through, it is clear that Bill is not happy with how training camp went.

Salas waived by the Eagles, I'd prefer him to a 6th RB.

Amen. Cut develin, bring in Salas. He had good rapport with Brady and BB thought he could stash him on the PS before Philly snatched him up.

Regarding that need for a veteran backup at DE:

shalise manza young ? @shalisemyoung
aw maaaaan...not Andre RT @AdamSchefter Raiders released DE Andre Carter, LB Omar Gaither, CB Joselio Hansen and T Tony Hills.

I think I can. There is a reason why there are depth issues at certain positions and why there are certain positions that have extra personnel.

Considering the team looks solid at the top and they had a successful preseason, I doubt that.

The pieces to round off the roster are out there. We'll see how it goes.

I think it might have had more to do with injuries than whether or not BB liked what he saw.

Francis, Zus, Cunningham, A. Wilson, for example...add those four back and we're where we expected to be. The good news is, none of these guys, other than maybe A Wilson, was supposed to be a difference make and can be replaced.

I want to see where this team is depth wise soon on the front 4 of the defensive line because right now, it frankly it is not adequate to last the first half of the season, nevermind the entire season.

Also, I don't know how anyone can be satisfied with the offensive line depth either. Kline was not good this pre-season other than the occasional showing in the running game.

This may be a quarterback league but as of right now - the depth on the offensive and defensive line has to be questioned.
