Will the Patriots trade Ryan Mallet ?

I think we do trade Mallet we don't really need him and there are teams out there who could use him, just look at Buffalo.

whoever drafted tebow in the 1st round needs to be punched in the face......

The phenomenon of fans thinking the backup QB is the greatest thing since sliced bread is nothing new, but it never ceases to amaze me.

With Mallet we've got a QB who has barely shown himself to be better than Tebow - and while everyone seems to hate Tebow, salivating at the thought of him being cut, for Mallet some seem to think he's going to bring a substantial draft pick in trade

Last month one fan here proposed franchising him next year so that we can secure a first round pick - but advocated retaining both he and Brady if Mallet did not command a first round pick (to go with his franchise salary) as Brady's contract would make Mallet's franchise tag salary affordable. (I kid you not.)

I find both the Mallet love and the Tebow hate kindof creepy.

The whole thing has been kind of strange with both of our backup QB's lately, huh?

One thing's for certain--at least with Mallett we have a shot at actually moving the ball downfield, unlike Tim Tebow. While I definitely agree with everything that you've said, I still think that Mallett has significant enough value to us simply due to the fact that he knows how to run the scheme.

That alone (not taking talent into the equation) is likely enough for him to hold the position should something happen to Tom Brady for a month or so. I just couldn't imagine someone else immediately stepping in and actually learning the playbook. Mediocre at best, Mallett is probably still our best choice as a backup this year.

can one hope Belichick cuts Tebow and trades Mallet at the same time? :nono:

Only if we'd be bringing back Brian Hoyer at the same time.

It'd be hard to imagine someone else stepping in and being able to understand and pick up the scheme in terms of a journeyman QB.

(I do understand that you were joking of course ;) )

I honestly don't know who would be interested. I just don't think he's shown enough the last two years to garner any real interest.

FWIW, as I've said before, the biggest problem with trying to figure out what Mallett is capable of is the fact that he's never really had the chance to run with the 1s at any point (even on the rare cases where he "started," he wasn't playing with Brady's starters).

I don't see why people assume that Mallett has no value or is only worth a 6th round pick. Brian Daboll was the Chiefs' OC a year ago and said that Mallett would have started for them. Cassel is now in Minnesota, about half a step behind Ponder for the starting job. You people are telling me that the Vikings wouldn't give up a mid-round pick for an upgrade on the Ponder/Cassel duo? According to a guy who has seen a lot of Cassel and a reasonable amount of Mallett, it sounds like that's what Mallett would be.

At this point, all we really know is that no team has offered enough for Belichick to be willing to trade him. What he wants, nobody really knows.

Why trade mallet? does he have any value at all? i dont think so...cut tebow.

1# - brady 2# - mallet and lets get going.

Fair points, Sciz--I think that Mallett could potentially bring a mid round pick (meaning 4th rounder) if the right suitor came along, sure. The disagreement comes from those who think that 1st and 2nd round picks are tossed around the NFL like the are in the game of Madden, which we know isn't true.

Daboll may have said that, then again so did Lombardi too...it doesn't necessarily mean that 1) that's how they currently feel now after seeing another period of mediocre play or 2) that their employers would agree with them when it came time to pull the cord on a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

Until Mallett has proven that he can do some of the things that another backup can do (Nick Foles is the current hot backup who probably still wouldn't command a 2nd round pick) we'll be having this debate for quite awhile, or at least another year.

In the meantime if I'm Belichick I still wouldn't trade him even if someone did offer me a 4th. He has too much current value to the team and is experienced with our scheme. He's worth more to us than anyone else right now in my opinion. If the pick became a 3rd, I'd have to pull the trigger.

Re: Will Ryan Mallet get traded ?

If Brady goes down we are completely done for the season

If Brady goes down, it's season over, anyway.

The team didn't make the playoffs in 2008. So yeah, the season was over in Week 1.

A point to ponder: "Brady starts all 16 games" and "Brady goes down for the season" are not the only 2 possible paths.

Suppose Brady suffers a mild injury that will knock him out of, say, games 3-8. And suppose you've just cavalierly dumped the team's backup QB who could have kept them competitive in those games.

That was an incredibly unfair cut to my quote, which said the following:

...If Brady goes down, it's season over, anyway. You find a veteran backup who might be capable of not killing you for a week or two, and then you hope you never need him...

If you think Mallett is any more than that at this point, I've got some bridges to sell you.

Re: Will Ryan Mallet get traded ?

Ivan and Belichick90210 acknowledge that Tebow should be on the roster.

Tell you what, I dropped it at the request of 2 members i respect, but if you guys really want to keep it going then I will jump right back in. Teb ow is the worst QB I have ever seen in my life and the only possible reason that i can come up with for Belichick keeping him is that he has madde the decision to retire at the end of this season, is turning them over to McDaniels, and is keeping Tebow because McDaniels still thinks he can turn a high school QB into a good pro QB and Belichick is allowing him to use the 53rd roster spot to keep his pet project around. Other than that it would make no sense at all because Tebow is without any question the worst player that has ever attempted to make any roster at any time. he is a fumbling machine who can't pass to save his life, he is worthless, and the only reason his supporters want him here is because they love him, there is no other reason because he is worthless as a football player.

The people crowing for Tebow to be on this team are doing so at the expense of the Patriots, because they will be cutting a player who can actually contribute in favor of one who can only hurt them on the field, but since 99% of them don't give one sweet sh.t about the Patriots the team's interests don't matter, only that Timmy has a home on a roster.

Pas have to trade Mallet and the time is now.

Thank god you are a Tebowite, please post your support for him as often as you can, they need someone with your reason and judgement on their side.

At this point I don't think Mallett has shown enough to bring in anything on the trade market and I don't think he will. My prediction is he walks in FA for a team where he can compete for a starting job.

Or is he an RFA or something this year? I can't be bothered to google.

You don't think teams like the Bills would trade for Mallett?

Nope. He's our #2 for the foreseeable future. Why trade him? He looks like he's a competent backup (at least after that last game) and he doesn't cost that much. He also gives you the luxury of not having to carry a 3rd QB.

The Tebow supporters don't care at all what happens to the Patriots, only that Timmy gets to be on a team, hopefully the QB's in front of him get hurt so he can play, and it doesn't matter to them whether they win or not, only that he gets to play. If they go 0-16 with him at QB they will be happy regardless, and would be crowing for him to return next season, and telling us he deserves another chance because how he actually plays doesn't matter, he is Timmy and he is a nice guy, so he should be on the team.
