Michael Jenkins released....

I've kinda become used to it. Every year, there's a couple dozen posters at least who figure that Slater's getting cut. Every year, they're wrong. I've stopped trying to make sense of it, except to figure that a lot of people are grabbing a beer and re-filling their nachos during kickoffs and punts or something.

I don't blame folks who feel frustrated by Slater's lack of development at WR. I'm one of them.

God. Please make it stop. This might be post of the year. Just terrible. Dont know where to start.

I joined Patsfans.com in 2005 and not 2010 which seems like yesterday.:snob: Do you know that Two UDFA's are going to make this Team? and probably see significant time...ie WR:Kenbrell Tompkins and TE:Zack Zudfeld. I don't think we all saw that going in. Which probably means some Tough Cuts are on the way. I like Slater but I am not in love with him as a Patriot player.

I saw it coming I NEVER Expected him to stick contrary to the popular veteran opinions.

It's always fun to watch the monkeys at the zoo throw their own feces at the wall and then celebrate when some of it sticks.

I dont even think the sample size is enough to make a determination. And for a garbage time body. He is perfect.

2 words. Fantasy Football. If a guy is not putting up the sexy stats. Running yards, receiving yeards, he is obviously not a good player.

Some fans are just like us and the other great poster there. We truly understand the game, how its played, and the weapons needed.

Some people are just pinkhats. It takes all types.

1.) How is it good news that a player got cut?

Yes. We should all be upset that the Patriots found a diamond in the rough in Kenbrell Thompkins.

Very bad news.

JE and DA are veterans. They can do it.

No need to devote a roster spot to an old WR just so he can give tips to the young guys if he sucks.

It very much depends on who we're talking about. How would you feel about Steve Smith of the Panthers if he gets cut in what is shaping up as a very competitive camp in Carolina?

At 34, Smith is $5.75 million on the cap for the Panthers this year and they have 11 WRs in camp and loads of young, inexpensive burners. See:

2013 Carolina Panthers Depth Chart | Ourlads.com

He is precisely the kind of guy that would jump at the opportunity to get a shot at a ring and be invaluable with the Patriots.

Lets just agree to disagree but I'll say this unlike prior years I think this Final Patriot Roster is going to be difficult to predict barrring injuries.

I agree there are going to be TOUGH cuts. However, there is nothing to disagree about on Slater. The whole NFL, the fanbase, coaches, BB, and just about anyone with 2 eyes thinks he is an elite pro bowl special team player...in the prime of his career.

Could he be cut? sure? Is what you are proclaiming rational? See second sentence above.

Yep, it never ends. "Why would you want an All-Pro ST captain drawing double teams on every punt and kickoff, when you could have a bottom-of-the-roster receiver inactive for every game?"

But hey, the complaints about wasting a roster slot on a long snapper seem to have gradually died out! So maybe there's hope for Slater, too.

Slater is an All Pro ST player and ST Capt whio can play WR in a pinch. He is going

NOWHERE.

Why does this confuse people every year?

BB values ST's more than a lot of fans.

I wish Slater was more of two role player he only does one thing good and that's being a Gunner. He Offers absolutely Nothing as a WR or a Return man...he's kinda fast for nothing. In the Final evaluation it wouldn't surprise me if he gets the axe. I think this Team has people who can do exactly what he can and more. Edelman and Washington makes us very dangerous in the return game on KO's and PR's areas where we were just Terrible at!

Saw this coming more than a week ago. So, it's going to be: Amendola, Thompkins, Boyce, Dobson and (hopefully) Edelman. Or, maybe Slater instead of Edelman, though I really want Edelman to make the team. I wish Slater could show something at WR.

I too wish Slater could be a good WR.

Just like I wish Connolly or Wendell could long snap.

It would be optimal for the Patriots to actually free up 2 captive roster spots.

That's one of his posts that won't stick to the cage.

LOL! I spoke too soon.

FWIW, long-snappers seldom come from the ranks of o-linemen. The typical LS is built more like an OLB or TE.

I agree. Just that it would be nice to find that top 10% guy who does both. Just like I agree with Patsfan2 that it would be optimal if Slater could also play WR.

I'd like to keep 5 RBs this year.....and hated like hell that they had to release Greg Salas last year.

The roster game is zero-sum.

You're saying he has undetermined potential? I think he's been a Patriot long enough to prove he's less than serviceable at WR. He has 28 catches and no touchdowns over five years, 22 of them coming in his first two seasons. No punt returns and only 28 kick returns averaging 19 yards per touch. Clearly, his value is narrowly defined although BB feels it's significant enough to hold onto him. Maybe his stopgap stints at safety are part of it.

Slater isn't a wide receiver. His first couple of years in the league, he was listed as a safety, and he wasn't a safety either. When the WR depth went to hell, he started taking some training camp snaps there, and has been nominally considered a WR ever since. In reality, he's neither a safety nor a wide receiver. If his lack of development somewhere is going to bother you, safety has always seemed like the position that he was better suited for, and he didn't catch on there either.

A lot of fans seem to think that special teams is the unit that you make a pit stop on so that you can stick on the roster long enough to become a contributor on one of the 'real' units (offense or defense). To be fair, for most players that is the case, but there is such a thing as career special-teamers. Apples to apples, they're less valuable than offensive and defensive players of a similar caliber, but if you're talking about one of the best special teamers in the NFL, then that's absolutely more valuable than a third stringer on another unit.

At this point, he's in his late 20s: he is what he is. And what he is is the best gunner in the NFL, a special teams captain, and an All Pro. As long as you believe that that's worth a roster spot, then he's doing just fine.

In other words, you'd rather have Devin McCourty than Matt Slater. I don't think you'll find anyone here who will disagree with you.
