Michael Jenkins released....

Can't believe Dobson chose the least tight number of all time for his position. Something has to change before the regular season.

Ya, 17 brings up some less than stellar memories...he needs to switch to an 80 number and quick.

Roster moves don't occur in a vacuum. If Jenkins is being cut, it's because other players are outperforming him. Since he's essentially a known quantity, that means that those other players are performing above the known-quantity level. It's good news.

It doesn't necessarily mean what you're claiming it means. It may mean that. It may mean something else (Jenkins could be completely finished, for example). I considered him to be a mediocre/JAG player who might well not make the team, and I hope the reason he was cut is that the team, correctly, has high confidence that the remaining WRs are better than he is. However, it's not good news that he was cut, although the reason(s) for him being cut may (or may not) be good ones in terms of how it/they reflect on the rest of the corps.

I choose to be the optimist. Michael Jenkins as been underrated here, IMHO. He's been a very constant #3 or #4 WR. If you don't count his rookie year, he's averaged over 45 catches and close to 500 yds for the last 8 years He's never going be a "star", or a go to guy, but he has been a very dependable and "professional" WR. Also most of those years he's been working with QB's who will never be mentioned in the same breath as Tom Brady.

So the fact that the Pats felt comfortable letting him go, especially this early in camp, DOES say something positive about how the Pats feel about the 3 rookies and the 2 vet FA's they signed. I guess if you want to twist it into something negative, you can always managed to do that, but, rest assured if BB wasn't completely happy with the progress he's seeing from the youngster's, he wouldn't have cut the 3 competent, if unspectacular, vets he signed in the off season. Especially one who could be a real GL threat.

I've heard on this board (not necessarily from you) that only Kool-Aid drinking, foam finger waving homers don't believe the following:
- Jenkins, Hawkins, Jones were bottom of the roster guys that wouldn't make a significant number of catches.
- Rookie WR never make an impact in their first years.
- Amendola gets hurt every year so we shouldn't expect much from him.
- Edelman has never produced so we shouldn't expect anything from him.
- Gronkowski will probably start on the Pup.

So according to the Non-kool aid crowd Brady is going to throw for something like 2000 yards this year. Great to know!

It's completely fair to say Brady isn't going to have the same success this year as last year when you replace two All Pro talents with a rookie WR and a career hospital case. No one is saying 2000 yards or Brady is going to suck, but expecting all time great type numbers like we've seen the past couple years is unrealistic to expect. People really don't understand how great Brady was last year and how great the offense was last year because we're spoiled and expect it.

And Jenkins, Hawkins and Jones WERE bottom of the roster guys who wouldn't have a significant amount of catches (or any at all).

I thought Jones would have been decent. But alas it did not work out and it seemed like he cut because of a illness as opposed to pure ability/talent.

Or it's because he's old and slow and never was that talented even in his prime?

Jones and Jenkins were both career #3 and #4 receivers who were not good enough to make the patriots team. I think it impressive that 3 rookies beat out career #3/#4 receivers.

Or it's because he's old and slow and never was that talented even in his prime?

The youth movement at the wide receiver position surges forward! :rocker:

I bet you see him play on the big cub this year. Mid October

I agree I think we will see him on the 53 man roster at some point after mid-season, I’m leaning towards him remaining on PUP in order for us to protect him, rather than trying to place him on the practice squad.

Leaning? Why would you expose him at all. Its a freebie. They dont need the body and if they do mid season he is a free look for a few weeks, active, or SEIR

Wouldn't doubt we sign a QB to take some lumps in these next few games.

Isn't that what Mallet and Tebow are for? With Brady's ankle sprain, I doubt we risk him any further this preseason. Expect the young'uns to get a lot of snaps. It might get a little bit ugly before the preseason is over, but I'd much rather treat the 'franchise' with kid gloves and save him for the regular season opener.

I'm not very surprised by the Jenkins cut at all. Kenbrell Thomkins and Aaron Dobson have looked very good by all accounts. Boyce has flashed some talent. And Amendola is our de facto #1 receiver at the moment.

The era of Michael Jenkins in Foxboro was short lived. I doubt we will even remember it ever happened. Well here's to good health for our remaining WRs! *knock on wood*

Ben Volin ?@BenVolin 6m
Assuming Pats WRs are Amendola, Dobson, Boyce, Thompkins, Edelman, Slater, average age will be 25, with 3.167 years experience ...

Ben Volin ?@BenVolin 4m
Which would make this the youngest and least experienced WR corps Brady has ever had, by far. Previous lows were 26.3 and 4.167 in 2002

It's clear that Tom really loves working with young WRs

I was attempting to sound politically correct by leaving a small possibility open. But I agree with you completely.

The point is that it doesn't make them kool aid chuggers to think that one of Jenkins, Hawkins or Jones might have had success here. Everyone knows that Brady will produce and get his yards, but anytime anyone points to a receiver that may have success there is someone to call him a homer because these guys all suck/rookies/injured. Someone has to catch those balls and produce those yards.

However, it's not good news that he was cut, although the reason(s) for him being cut may (or may not) be good ones in terms of how it/they reflect on the rest of the corps.

So it's not good news that he was cut, but maybe it is good news? Or perhaps not?

we all knew he was fodder....but this is a good sign the youth movement is looking even better...than they anticipated......:rocker:
