Know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em, Christian.

In other words, sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie. Not every little small detail or pissing match is always going to be worked out right at that particular moment in time. Respect is earned over time buddy.

Otherwise, we'd all be women...

(no offense to the great women posters here, by the way )

You'll see plenty of links to sites that breakdown different assignments etc once the real games get going. There will be plenty of discussion in threads that are started.

Some of the front seven guys played both one gap and two gap responsibilities last year, which can be somewhat confusing in terms of knowing who was playing what and specific assignments etc, but for the most part there aren't too many "stupid" questions aside from the meaning of life, why my wife is in a bad mood, and things of that nature.

Cool. Am looking forward to it.

I understand, but when you, Joker, and the other vets were new to these boards I am sure that you would have asked the same thing.

What these mediots don't seem to remember from year to year is that just about every Patriots/Belichick built team slowly builds upon itself over the course of the season.

From about mid-late November on, many of our schemes and specific assignments for individual players have grown, and the team has addressed many of its weaknesses and are playing together more coherently.

As many have pointed out, it's not necessarily about the record we end up with; it's more about building off of the mistakes, playing good focused football down the stretch, and hopefully mending some of these broken games that have been taking place in Jan/Feb.

Many of us are to some degree, especially compared with the incredible knowledge of many of these excellent X/O guys.

I'm here to learn more about these complicated nuances as much as possible, just like you.

One thing we know for sure--Belichick loves to have versatile personnel, and the ability to have the same guys on the field will help in the hurry up situations too. That's just one more aspect that we can hope for in terms of seeing some of these "new" players work out, particularly in sub packages. We want the ability to obviously be able to stop both the run and the pass when we won't have the time to substitute due to playing teams like Denver.
jays52 and Zeus must post more often. Selfish bastards keeping their football intellect to themselves.

Same here.

I get what you're saying.

I'm just reminding you that rarely are pissing matches solved at that particular moment in time, so specifically asking someone questions or stirring the pot so to speak, isn't necessarily the best approach sometimes and it can even have a way of backfiring. Not everyone is going to like you, that goes for all of us. Sometimes those who initially don't have a way of coming around if and when you earn their respect down the line---just like regular life.

And that's my Dr.Phil lesson of the evening

Oh man--Zeus cracks me up with that writing style. He should be a professional writer if he isn't already.

Both of those guys are brilliant, especially when it comes to defensive breakdowns.

okay thanks for the advice. I just believe treat others the way you want to be treated.

You really stepped into that one.

One of the arguments for the Pats taking a step back which I can't understand is that the odds of the rookies like Dobson to perform are against them. That is bunk. The odds of Dobson being a 1,000 plus yard, 8 plus TD WR is low. But the odds of a rookie WR like Dobson being a solid #2 WR are relatively high.

Not saying Dobson will be a solid #2 WR right off the bat, but rookie WRs do become solid #2 WRs right off the bat all the time. What rarely happens is to see a stud #1 WR right out of the gates.

The way I see it, as long as Amendola stays healthy, he should be at least 80-90% of Welker, maybe more, maybe much more. And the receiving corp looks to be better from #2 on than it was last year where it really was Brandon Lloyd and not much else (Branch barely contributed except for a few games). I think this corps depth can be the closest to 2007 than any year since then where the Pats had four WRs who could contribute on the field.

I see Edelman (as long as he is healthy) and Dobson capable of being consistent contributors. I think Thompkins can be in the Stallworth. Stallworth became a guy who only caught one or two balls a game but one of them usually being a big catch. I think Boyce can be solid as a guy rotated in and out. This receiving corp could 5 deep with guys who can actually make an impact on the field in some sort of way.

Again, I can see why people would think the Pats would take a step back this year. From the outside looking in and not paying attention to what is going on in practice, the Pats look like a much weaker team without Welker, Hernandez, and possibly Gronk. But the signs from camp are encouraging with Dobson and Amendola clicking fast and Thompkins looking like a steal. But we won't know for sure until we see the Bills in about a month.

Nah, he gets respect by being so damned good at being inventively disrespectful. Disrespect with a twist of lemon, if you will. I, for one, can appreciate his creative aptitude & freaky styley. It's called personalitahh.
Oh, you know, like Alfalfa's hair spike or something.

Beats the Hell out of being just another sheep in the flock, that's fer farking shur.

The offense may not score as many points, but I believe they will be more versatile and dynamic. The defense will play a much larger role in the team's success than it has in previous years. Lots of rookies from last year will have more of an impact this year. They've been playing together for a while now and the scheme will be more complicated.

A tumultuous offseason, key components of the offense gone, question marks at WR, question marks at TE, health question marks along the OL, question marks at RB, question marks in the pass rush, question marks when it comes to coverage in the intermediate area of the field, and health question marks in the secondary. Any analyst that gets paid to give an opinion would reasonably give the opinion that they think the Pats may take a step back. That's to be expected. The success of the Pats season depends on how many of those question marks are able to be erased.

I think the biggest problem with BSPN and NFLN's "experts" is that they go for the big name players too often. They want familiarity. Give me Matt Chatham, Matt Bowen, Ross Tucker, or Tim Ryan any day. Those guys know football, they get the x's and o's and how it relates to each team as well as their scheme, and they are not biased despite who they work for or played for.

I guess reasonable does not sell in today's tv market.

Good points, particularly regarding Dobson. It seems as though some in the media, particularly radio people, are just taking it for granted that Dobson and Boyce will be recreations of Taylor Price and Chad Jackson. Well, they could be, theoretically, but they could also end up being good players, perhaps even stars. It remains to be seen, but some just seem to be dismissing any possibility that they'll be good.
