NFLN morons: Patriots will "take a step back" this season

Ummm, have we really even identified what base defense we are running this year ? In a number of threads, that still seemed to be in question.

Its only in question because they are in training camp. Do you know what their base defense was last year when Chandler Jones was healthy?

No, there is not. Not yet. We won't know until the team starts playing. People are looking myopically at WR/TE and not considering other very important aspects as part of the overall team picture.

they started running a base 4/3 with multiple front variations and 3/4, 5/2 principles thrown in back in 2010 I believe. The person to ask is Jays52 when he's around. There really is no answer to your question Demosthenes, since defensive alignments vary from game to game and even quarter to quarter to play to play. They line up in a 4/3 pro set one play, play 4/3 under the next, go to a 5/2 package on long yardage...it's all very flexible.

Demos - it is an irrational position to take if guys like Sanders have no knowledge of what the Patriots are going to utilize as an offensive philosophy.

If these guys at NFLN were smart, their overall and assumptive evaluation would take into consideration what offensive weapons that they do have to replace Welker, Lloyd, Hernandez and the other guys that are not on this years' roster.

Statistically, the passing game will regress some but not to the extent that they probably believe. With that said - this defense, granted against a weaker schedule, was a top 10 NFL defense after Talib was acquired.

As long as this team stays healthy on the defensive side of the ball, they are going to help the offense with TOP which will lead to better than expected results.

I think that the Pats will be fine. Brady will put up Brady numbers like he always has. Amendola might not do exactly the same kind of things as Welker, but he'll put up a lot of production. My memory is somewhat faulty, but I don't recall Welker being an "All word receiver" until he got up here and had Brady throwing to him. If Amendola can make it through the season and not get injured, he'll put up good numbers. Edelman and Boyce have also looked good according to most reports I've seen.

It looks like Brady will have some receivers with size and speed this year. Dobson and Thompkins have been having a good camp so far, from what I have read. Can't wait to see how they do in preseason games.

I like the fact that Brady has new guys around him and think that he'll distribute the ball more. To me, this is a plus. Reasoning, I look at Detroit with Megatron putting up stupid stats, and noticed that Detroit sucked. Arizona also came to mind with Fritz putting up nice numbers, yet they have sucked as well. Spreading the ball out more means that we won't be slowed down as much by opponents trying to take certain targets away, or that injuries would be as harmful.

TE situation could be better, but Fells has looked pretty good as has Sudfeld. Won't compare to Gronk and Ahern, but will be fine especially if/when Gronk comes back healthy. Haven't read all that much about Hooooooom.

RB situation is all to the good. Pats were 7th in rushing last year with Ridley and Vereen. Have heard good stuff about Bolden, haven't heard too much positive about Blount.

That covers the skill positions. Good enough ?

His 1st 2 seasons as a starter look like typical growing pains numbers, Wes has always been very productive going back to college. He had a couple 1050+yd receiving seasons, even had 550+yds rushing, also produced around 1200 yds with Cassel throwing him the ball.

All world? idk but he has a chip on his shoulder and plays like it...

More often than not - they ran a hybrid 4-3 especially after Talib showed up.

You are going to see a lot more aggressiveness out of this defense this year.

The days of vanilla fronts are over.

Ok - that is fine. Lets just put it this way. By the end of the year - one of the most important players that will be on this roster is going to be Jamie Collins because of the running backs that they will have to matchup against.

As we all saw last year the obvious weaknesses on the defense were against the TE, the RB, and the WR3. Hopefully we have addressed at least a couple of those areas with the addition of a guy like Collins and the somewhat revamped safety group.

If Jamie Collins can prove to be worthy of his first choice draft selection on any level whatsoever, we may be in a much better position. Fletcher is obviously another to keep an eye on as a much better coverage LB.

Kudos for helping out some of the new guys with these questions/comments, as they seem to genuinely interested in knowing more about the team. Everyone has to start somewhere. That's all I'll say about it because it's none of my business.

Guys, this is like the difference between a survey 101 course and a 400 level course in college. It's TV. It's a 101 course.

Other teams added big name players. Texans got Reed, Broncos got Welker. The Pats ? They lost 85% of the production from their passing game and brought in Amendola and some rookies through the draft.

I'm going to have to do a lot of reading/studying on defenses. I know a fair amount of the basics, but am a newb on the more advanced aspects (at least what I consider to be advanced).

Thanks, every single poster was new here at some point in time. People should be more accepting of anyone who's willing to support the same team. I am still learning more about the team, but I am sure I am not the only poster here in that boat. Anyways, I give my opinions when I feel necessary.

One thing we know for sure--Belichick loves to have versatile personnel, and the ability to have the same guys on the field will help in the hurry up situations too. That's just one more aspect that we can hope for in terms of seeing some of these "new" players work out, particularly in sub packages. We want the ability to obviously be able to stop both the run and the pass when we won't have the time to substitute due to playing teams like Denver.

Joker let me clarify my post on Talib a little.

In that thread it was about who do you expect to be cut. I was basing my OPINION on who I preferred to be cut from the team. In response to Brady6's 5 picks. I posted that I agree, except I would add Talib. However, if he makes the team I will support him.


In other words we all have our preferences on who we don't want to make the final 53 on the roster. So I stated who I preferred to not make the final roster. However, I wanted to make it clear that if the 6 that I wanted off the team ended up making the final roster than I would support them. Just like every Pats fan should support every member on the final roster even if they preferred that they didn't make final roster.

That is why I made the comment. I wasn't going to go into my reasoning except to say it was based on my preferences.

It's also why we hope like hell that at least one of A.Wilson or T.Wilson will be able to have some success in both the run and the passing game, although at this point in time both seem to have a somewhat glaring weakness in terms of the pass.

If that can be improved upon (the odds are probably just as good/bad either way, we have an older guy who's lost a step and a younger guy who can't cover too well) then the hybrid role may prove to take us a long way towards improving the defense.

You'll see plenty of links to sites that breakdown different assignments etc once the real games get going. There will be plenty of discussion in threads that are started.

Some of the front seven guys played both one gap and two gap responsibilities last year, which can be somewhat confusing in terms of knowing who was playing what and specific assignments etc, but for the most part there aren't too many "stupid" questions aside from the meaning of life, why my wife is in a bad mood, and things of that nature.
