I OWN a copy of the 1989 NY Post cover...Park Punk Goes Bananas...with a picture of Kevin Richardson or Kharey Wise on the cover..the five were convicted of "wilding" and raping and beating a jogger into unconsciousness. They served almost ten years in jail unti the REAL rapist confessed in 2002 and DNA confirmed it was he and he alone that raped the woman. These five kids were savagely attacked by the media and convicted in the press, headline after headline. They sued aftyer being released...the city of NY refuses to pay. The NY Post torched their cover from 1989. I have it and I HAVE uploaded it on occasion, to the supreme dismay of certain media types.

The five were exonerated in 2002 when Matias Reyes, who was doing prison time for murder and rape convictions, came forward and confessed and his DNA linked him to the crime. The five were released and since have launched a $250 million lawsuit against the city for their wrongful convictions. The city has so far refused to settle.

Back in 1989, the Central Park five did not have much of a chance after the city’s celebrated journalist Pete Hamill turned his Bible-thumping prose against them to avenge the jogger. This was his Post column two days after the rape:

“They were coming downtown from a world of crack, welfare, guns, knives, indifference and ignorance. They were coming from a land with no fathers. . .They were coming from the anarchic province of the poor.

And driven by a collective fury, brimming with the rippling energies of youth, their minds teeming with the violent images of the streets and the movies, they had only one goal: to smash, hurt, rob, stomp, rape. The enemies were rich. The enemies were white.”

It was a good story. None of it was true.

so far, the same thing seems to be happening here, internet message board style...the Uncle Meats of the world are banging away at their keyboards with their blind, hate filled stories of "what if, suppose,could have,maybe, orange proves apple" theories...EXACTLY like Pet Hamill did 23 years ago. We've learned NOTHING as a society.

Yeah they do. And there's a little slice of it for every media consumer who rushes to tweet, retweet, link, etc., to every bit of speculation. They make a product. To the extent that the demand for said product is enormous, they'll keep serving the same recipe.

Murdering animals is illegal??? Cripes, I've shot a ton of animals. In cold blood, too. Stalked then, laid in wait and blew them while they walked down the trail minding their own business. Nothing illegal about that.

I think VIck was sentenced for dog fighting, not killing animals.

I'm 100% in favor of killing certain animals, like cows, chickens, pigs, etc. The taste so good with BBQ sauce.

But seriously, I understand your point. People go nutso over animal cruelty (cute animals, mostly, like seals) while kids the world over die of malnutrition. I don't understand it.

The media just gives the people what they want. It's fun to bash the media and all, but they wouldn't be in such a rush to publish news and wouldn't go with false/shaky/unchecked leads if there weren't a huge demand for the 24 hour news cycle.

As much as people love to complain about the media, people also love instant news on Twitter (et al). People whine about sensationalism but millions of people buy it. It sells. We, the consumer (on a societal scale), have told the media "it's OK to report crazy, false and over-the-top stuff because we'll pay for it with our clicks to your website".

In today's society, you don't have to be right, you have to be first. That's what generates clicks and page views and thus that's what puts money in the "journalist's" pocket. What are the repercussions of posting something false? Nothing. Just ignore it and keep pumping out "news" before someone else. There are a few who legitimately hold erroneous reporting against a media outlet/news agency but the vast majority of us are gluttons for our instant gratification. We refresh Twitter, refresh our preferred news feed, check the news from our phones while at work, on the toilet, while driving or in bed.

We want it, they give it to us. You don't want to sift through the nonsense and false stuff? Stick to straight press releases. You'll be waiting days (or weeks) for stories to develop but you won't be a hypocrite.

These media outlets are for-profit, not for-integrity. As with any for-profit company, as long as putting out a shoddy or outright incorrect (or deceitful) product remains profitable, there will be no desire or need to change. It's the free market at work. We wouldn't want to be anti-freedom and suggest that a for-profit company such as CNN or FOX or NBC should hurt their profits for reasons such as "integrity" or "accuracy" do we?

A warrant for the arrest of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has reportedly been issued.

According to ABC News and FOX-25 in Boston, the arrest warrant is for obstruction of justice involving the murder investigation of Odin Lloyd.

Lloyd was found dead near Hernandez's home in North Attleboro, Mass., on Monday night. Police have already met with Hernandez twice during the early stages of the investigation.

On Thursday, FOX-25 cited a law enforcement source as saying that Hernandez and Lloyd were with two other men at a bar in Boston on the night of the homicide and left together in a vehicle driven by Hernandez. The report said it is still unclear as to what happened afterward.

However, FOX-25 has also reported that Hernandez's neighbors heard gunshots between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. ET on Monday morning.

I'm not claiming that any media outlet has been perfect, or near to it. I'm pointing out that ABC screwed the pooch too. They've got plenty of company.

When you look back at recent coverage of big stories, you see the incompetence is spread around pretty well. From this story, to the bombings, to the CT school shootings, to the recent tornado story, etc.... And that doesn't even get into the ridiculous biases they all display.

All the major outlets have screwed the pooch. They've pissed away quality control and turned themselves into what amounts to little more than well funded civilians spouting off on Twitter and the like. That's why they're probably doomed.
