The 2013 Prospect Thread

Nice find. Rice is a pretty underrated academic school in the Northeast. He should be able to handle the complexities of the playbook. He may well be an UDFA replacement for Edelman, if he walks in FA. It seems that despite his highlights, in 2012 pretty much shifted from a rb to a wr.

Carries YPC Receptions YPR
2008 (Michigan) 118 4.1 19 9.2
2010 197 4.5 39 9.8
2011 (7 games) 38 4.2 9 8.0
2012 5 3.2 54 11.2

Rice is in Houston.

And, in any case, McGuffie could carry on the recent tradition of short, white skill players.

Mayock said today that Alec Ogletree would be a top 15 player if it weren't for his 2 arrests and 4 game suspension for drug use.

Ogletree has Ravens written all over him at 32.

All he has left is commit murder and he will fit right in.

I know where it is, I lived in Houston for 8 years. It is not underrated at all in Texas. If you live in Houston, it is easier to get into Stanford than to get into Rice. It is underrated to many people in the Northeast.

Ah. Missing antecedents for the win!

I'd have to think long and hard on using a top 10 on Ansah. 15-30 seems like a worthy risk on a guy from a small school with his freakish measureables and production. Albeit his production is against very weak competition.

This might not even be an issue by draft day, even if we somehow did make the Mallet for #6 trade. He is moving up so fast and is expected to blow up the combine, so I wouldn't at all be surprised to see him go to Detroit at #5, Oakland at #3 or even Jacksonville at #2. I think he could easily jump Damontre Moore and Bjoern Werner on some teams boards (although I wouldn't agree with it).

It sounds a little crazy, but if this Mallett for 6 thing (or any variant) works out, Cordarelle Patterson would be awfully tempting, even over all of the defensive linemen.

Yikes. Whilst Patterson might be the love child of AJ Green and Wes Welker and his upside is incredible, he'd scare me to death picking him in the top 10. He'll go there or pretty close but he'll either go down as one of the biggest busts ever or one of the greatest players in the NFL. I don't see any middle ground with Patterson.

I've mentioned him a couple of times as an intriguing later round prospect...unfortunately, maybe not. Russ Lande thinks Armonty Bryant is a 2nd or 3rd rounder:

Russ Lande, a Director of Scouting for nationalfootballpost.com and a former scout for the Rams, wrote that Bryant was the best player throughout the week of practice at the Texas vs. The Nation game.

“Possessing quick feet and agility, he showed the ability to change directions in a flash to beat a pass blocker inside and outside,” Lande wrote. “His excellent use of his hands and long arms show up in his wide variety of pass rush moves. His play this week proved he should have been at the Senior Bowl as he has legit second/third-round talent.”

Those Tennessee WideOuts do bring a lot of Beta to the table, don't they??

After what I said about Patterson being risk/reward, this might seem a little ironic but I'd take Ansah at #6. Below is one reason why.

I'd love peoples feed back on this play I've linked to

Ezekiel Ansah 2012 Highlights [HD] - YouTube

Note how he stops his downhill movement as soon as he sees the RB start to leak out and tracks the RB to snuff out a screen.

Either he has outstanding instincts or shows very good discipline and ability to take to coaching. Maybe it's just me but I'm fascinated by that play - it shows a maturity you don't normally see from College DE's that when given a clear path to the QB would just pin their ears back and go for the seemingly unprotected QB.

Excellent Choice, Sir. :snob:

In my mind, there's never really been any question about Easy Ansah.

...If you'll pardon the expression.

It's only a matter of hoping something cataclysmic happens to make'm fall to us.

I have a new favorite prospect (outside of Michael Williams).

Vince Williams- MLB- Florida State- 6'1" 247lbs
This guy is a flat out beast. He is physical, instictive, athletic and plays the game hard. He uses his hands well to disengage and get throught traffic and has the power to absolutely stone RB's at the line. He is a solid athlete with a decent feel for dropping into coverage and I think he will be a stud in the NFL. Spikes is a free agent next season and I don't know if we can afford him, but Williams would be a fantastic replacement.

Just look at the 2nd play! (and the guy he chases down on the first play I believe is Chris Rainey, so he has some speed).

Good UDFA possibility

Brandon Hepburn, Florida A & M

6'3", 242 lb

Via ESPN:

Brandon Hepburn, LB, Florida A&M
6-4, 235 pound senior
Hepburn has great range and strength and can cover a lot of ground with his athletic ability. He can play the run, drop back into pass coverage, and he does a great job of reading the play. He has 30 solo and 50 total tackles, including 3 sacks.

Brandon Hepburn - College Football Nation Blog - ESPN

But here's why I think he's a good candidate:

He'a the Team Captain but more importantly he's about as good a candidate intangibles wise as you are likely to find:

In many ways, Brandon Hepburn is an extraordinary human being. He walked on to the Florida A&M football team while carrying a full academic load in biochemistry. During his summer internship, he successfully found a way to kill certain cancer cells in rats using copper-loaded nanoparticles. He dreams of owning a biochemical company so he can lead research that will eradicate deadly diseases.

For Florida A&M coach Joe Taylor, Hepburn is a godsend. A devoutly Christian student-athlete who chose the school because of the academic offerings, Brandon serves as an ever-present reminder to Taylor’s other student-athletes of all that’s possible.

“As a coach, you always tell guys that whatever they want to become, there is somebody who is already it, so I tell them to do a lot of reading and research,” Taylor said. “But with Brandon, here’s a role model who is right in the midst of these guys. He’s a perfect example of what can happen once you put your mind to it.”

While Taylor waxes poetic about his star player, Hepburn merely says it’s a “privilege” and “a blessing” to be an example for his teammates.

“I know oftentimes in the black community it’s hard to find a father figure or a big brother to talk to,” he said. “Coming here to this program, I knew I had my coaches to talk through any of my life problems. It’s awesome that I have the chance to give back when I’m still playing.”

Have no idea whether he's good enough but a) I wouldn't bet against that type of character succeeding and B)I'd want him in my locker room.

Edit: Played in the Texas-All Stars game and had an interception and will be at the Combine so one to keep an eye on.

What's really awesome about this board, is that several people have been aware of guys like Ansah since the very beginning. This board has been on top of every prospect since day one. Media outlets catch up a couple months later. That's pretty cool. If I want up to the minute analysis on who's new, then I come to this board. Thank you all for that. :rocker:

A guy on the offensive line that nobody is talking about is Chris Faulk from LSU. Here's a kid, prior to the injury that a lot of mocks had in the top 10 last summer. If his medicals check out, he could be a steal. Measured in a 6050 331lb with 34 1/4 inch arms. I think the workouts will mean more for him than most since he missed a lot of time.

From tony Pauline:

Menelik Watson/T/Florida State is getting a lot of 1st round mention from teams at the combine. O-line version of Ziggy Ansah.

I'm still tempted. But at the very least, another prospect probably drops to us.

I'm very intrigued by Watson. Interestingly, Kyle Long was his team mate at Sunnydale (or whatever the name was) JUCO and influenced Watson to go to FSU. Give Scar a few minutes with Watson...he could be very very good.
