Charles Woodson expected to be released by Green Bay Packers

One could debate that, sure. I'm not positive I believe that myself, but we've disagreed on more important issues.

Talib is better is certain aspects, but I'd probably still rather have Bailey due to his other attributes such as experience, durability, work ethic, intelligence, and overall ability to use those traits to his advantage.

Just the fact alone that his durability has allowed him to average 15/16 games in his fourteen year career tells me that we'd be guaranteed something, unlike the gamble that is Aqib Talib.

I surely wouldn't want to pay him what Denver supposedly is going to this year, but that's a different subject altogether.

I'm not factoring in durability or leadership or any of those things. I'm just saying that Baileys skill level is average at best now, due to age, and Talib is better than that.

I think Woodson would be a good 1-year fit for NE. He's not what he was, but he can still make big plays and he brings tons of leadership to the locker room. He can't cover like he used to, but one thing Woodson has always been is a sure tackler who also excels at the safety blitz.

Packers' front office let him go because they couldn't afford his 9 million $ contract. Pats can sign him for a lot less.

Word from Packers' insiders is that they wanted to clear cap space and continue their youth movement. They probably will keep Jermichael Finley as their TE for one more year, trade back their #1 pick a little bit and try to grab Matt Elam early in the 2nd round. Makes sense for the Packers.

Woodson finally got healthy at the end of the season. I think it's worth a risk.

I don't know. I'm tired of the Pats picking up other teams' aging stars and trying to squeeze a few more good years out of them, often with mixed results (which look like this - older guy comes in, looks good in camp, looks like he's going to be great, oops, injury, just can't get back to form, after teasing us for a while). Is it too much to ask that they go into the draft and get a stud that can start young and healthy here and be here for years to come? It's been a while since Rodney Harrison joined the team.

Yep, Have you heard of the expression..."I like to hit myself with a hammer because it feels so good when I stop"...?

It is documented and proven that BB can do better trades with FA pick ups or Trades. than he can drafting.

I disagree with that proven fact.
Look back at the # of FAs signed & subsequently cut. It exceeds that of the draft picks greatly.
Bottom line is that both are sources of talent, each route has its pitfalls. Some years one way works out better than the other. Last year had decent results from both with starters and notable failures in FA.

Brady, Wilfork, Seymour,Warren, Mayo, Jones, Hightower, Spikes, McCourty, Mankins, Light, Solder, Koppen, Vollmer, Ridley, Gronkowski, Hernandez, Dennard
wanna compare your trade and FA list to that?

Man, an easy solution to their safety problems fell right into their lap. Belichick better not miss this chance.

There are lots of other team who will bid for service of Reed and Woodson. We have no special rights to these players.

Not to mention that the team may feel better about potentially addessing the situation for the forseeable future with a player like William Moore or Jarius Byrd rather than just slap an expensive band-aid on the position that will likely rival in the same ballpark of cost for the couple years that he'd be here.

Yeah...there is about 0% chance that the Pats will sign Moore or Byrd to the massive long-term contracts those guys are going to get. Meanwhile Woodson's market will be very limited since he's old, declining, coming off a poor year, and is only considering signing with SB contenders.

I don't know..you're surely correct that the chances are probably not too good, but safety is a position where the franchise tag is only coming in at 6.7 million. Only the positions of kickers/punters and TEs have lower top 5 average numbers. It's actually a position where Belichick could make a big splash without having to spend the huge #'s that WR or CB would cost.

In that sense the potential deals may not be quite as "massive" as you are imagining, however that point can also be turned around to where their current teams are in a much better place to keep them too, so that will likely limit the market due to the possibility of more franchise tags for that position.

Dashon Goldson or someone in the same category for 5/35 would have the potential to be a very good argument instead of spending that kind of money on Talib. That's what Michael Griffin got last year as one of the top players at his position. It will all depend how they approach the secondary positions in the draft and FA.

As far as Woodson, he and Reed will still likely be looking in the range of 6-7 million a year, so the aav would be the exact same, although it would be a much shorter range deal so that would be the benefit of doing that. The problem no matter what, is that many teams will likely be in the market for these guys, so it will all depend on what Belichick sees as the best choice.
