I don't know. I'm tired of the Pats picking up other teams' aging stars and trying to squeeze a few more good years out of them, often with mixed results (which look like this - older guy comes in, looks good in camp, looks like he's going to be great, oops, injury, just can't get back to form, after teasing us for a while). Is it too much to ask that they go into the draft and get a stud that can start young and healthy here and be here for years to come? It's been a while since Rodney Harrison joined the team.
There were some people who thought that after 9 years with the Chargers Rodney Harrison was an aging star with his better days behind him. Granted, Woodson is as old now as Harrison was when he retired, but if the Pats think he has a year left in the tank I'd do it. Even if he wasn't a starter, there are a lot worse backups out there. And his experience could be a big plus in helping some of the young guys along.
Also, the Pats have drafted a great many "young studs". Most of them have been colossal flops. I won't even count the 2012 draft because it's too recent. What about the five before that?
2011: Ras-I Dowling-2nd round
2010: Devin McCourty-1st round
2009: Patrick Chung-2nd round, Darius Butler-2nd Round
2008: Terrence Wheatley-2nd round
2007: Brandon Meriweather-1st round
In five consecutive drafts the Pats spent six first or second round picks on DBs. How have they done with that? McCourty is fine. Dowling can't make it onto the field because he's always hurt. Chung will very likely not be back. Butler, Wheatley, and Meriweather are all gone and none have done much at all after leaving the Pats. So six high draft picks to get one player that's good but not as great as he was projected to be.
At this point I'd rather have the guy that's proven he can play over the rookie that will have a ton of promise and not amount to anything in reality. Sure, I'd rather get a free agent that's under 30 and proven, but no team can afford many of those. So you have to round out the backfield with draft picks and older/less hyped players.
So sure, draft a CB in the first round. We have to hit on one eventually. But in case we don't I'd rather have Woodson to pick up some slack than some of the scrubs we have ended up with lately.
