Three Pats consume 35 percent of cap | ProFootballTalk

You would almost certainly think that in order for NE to have a chance to get some veteran help that is not on the scrap heap this year and/or to keep at least 2 of Welker,Talib or Vollmer,it would make sense to try and negotiate to restructure Brady,Mankins,Wilfork's contracts........going to be a hard issue to deal with this summer as restructuring isn't so cool with some.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Mankins as a cap casualty, given his injury issues this year, if he will not restructure. That would necessitate drafting O-line.

There's a 0% chance that Mankins is cut loose as a cap casualty. If Mankins were to be cut, it would be for other reasons. His cap value is $10 million but, if he gets cut, he would count $12 million against the cap.

thanks- I didn't know his dead cap situation

No problem.... it's tougher to get the real info now that Miguel's no longer doing his cap work. We have to rely on Jason (who seems to be pretty darned solid, btw). Here's his site, in case you ever want to look at cap items for any of the AFCE teams:

Cut Mankins ass. Overrated and so overpaid. Sign Donald Thomas at 1/20 the cap hit. Ultimatum to Logan, you either restructure or take a hike, you are not worth this kind of money, we can use that money where it's needed.

Pro Bowl? What a joke.

Yeah I'm not positive, but I think that the situation with Mankins improves dramatically in the Patriots favor after 2 more years, should they choose to let him go then and forego the last 2 years of his remaining 4.

In the meantime I think they are pretty much on the hook for all common sense purposes for 2013 and 2014, although I would imagine that 2014 would be much lesser of a deap cap hit but I don't know that for sure.

That Jason243 guy from the NYJ forum that Deus mentions seems to really know his stuff inside and out, so I'm glad that we have a permanent link for reference.

see you later tom ... time to float on his rubber duck in his moat.

JK .... easy now ..... JK.

Todd McShay has the Patriots taking Jonathan Cooper as a value pick in the first round. If that eventuates, I wonder if the Patriots would attempt to trade Mankins?

We're into that interesting time of the year. I don't know about you guys but I can't wait for Free Agency and the Draft.

Come on, guys. Cutting (or trading) Mankins HURTS the cap rather than helping it. If you want to make a "Mankins sucks" thread, then go ahead and put that stuff there. In a "Mankins is taking up lots of the Pats' cap" thread, then cutting/trading him makes no sense at all.

My preference is for Mankins to return to full health and (if he's around for the Patriots) take Matt Elam at their pick. That's a best of both worlds scenario.

Aye. Matt Elam with the first pick, hopefully after trading down a few picks to secure others throughout the draft.

Kontra liking your mention of a Gator? Big shocker there

Edit: See his post above mine

I used to like Kontra... until I found out he was a Miami Heat fan. There's no turning back from that.

As for Elam, he's a darn good Safety and it's an area of need. BB hits on Pro Bowlers in the first round for New England. One can only hope!

It's no secret that Elam is my overall binky in the draft. Offensively, it's Justin Hunter.

Brady should volunteer to forgo a couple years' salary. It's not like he needs the money or would miss it with the Mrs. closing in on $1 billion.

who out there would NOT want tom brady to sponsor their product? the guy can make so much MORE through advertisements than through the NEP,

is it legal for Brady to take a HUGE pay cut, and simply recoup his losses from advertisements? lmao

also, looking back, it seems signing mankins to that deal was the wrong move

I completely agree, there is no point getting rid of Mankins this year. Next year however we can have this discussion because his cap hit is $10.5mil and we can actually save some space by cutting or trading him. Right now though it would not only be a downgrade on the field but have negative cap implications.

What are the specifics to allowing him to walk next year, as far as less dead cap hit?

I figured it would be a fair improvement over this year's nonsensical choice of a 12 million dollar dead cap hit, but I wasn't sure how much better it would be.
