The 2013 Prospect Thread

does anyone know where Tyrann Mathieu is gonna go in the draft? I would love to get him despite his off the field problems. He's a playmaker and is always all over who hes covering btw i like bennie logan a lot. If our draft was Matt elam, Bennie Logan, Quinton Patton, Tyrann Mathieu, Caraun Reed i would be very happy

Seriously, how can anyone have any idea where he's going to go? He's a day 2 talent (great playmaker, but undersized and limited in man coverage) who will almost certainly go somewhere on day 3. He should probably go 6th or 7th round because of all the risk factors. But that won't necessarily stop someone from reaching, and there's still too much time between now and the draft for his stock to change.

You can have Mathieu. I'll take Tharold Simon - he could be a Richard Sherman kind of big press-man CB, hopefully with less punk attitude. No way of knowing if he'll be as good, but there was no way of knowing Sherman would be this good this fast, either.

I have markus wheaton in about the 5th round.

Sam Montgomery and Bennie Logan reportedly coming out:

Barkevious Mingo, Sam Montgomery, Bennie Logan of LSU Tigers to declare for 2013 NFL draft -- sources - ESPN

LSU's going to have a lot of rebuilding to do next year.

Montgomery seems to be a good candidate for the "overexposure stock slide" that a couple of prospects experience every year. It seems like in the past year the perception of his upside went down and the perception of his floor went up. That's how a lot of the slides start - sexier prospects take the spotlight.

Right now it looks like late 5th round but there's still some uncertainty.

You're probably the only one right now, but it's early. I'm guessing top 75 pick.

A video of Ansah only playing outside the tackle would be so very useful.

Wheaton in the 5th? I wish.

A fair point. Though with respect to the Captain, I'm not sure that much "constructive" has been offered for years.

Ouch!

In the words of Lord Vader himself, I find your lack of faith in me disturbing.

And a tip o' the scally cap to Manxman for having the Force within him to understand
the true meaning of my bottom sig.

I don't know Mayo. Honey Badger is worth at least a 5th for his special teams play alone. Not only was he a great return guy, he played on coverage units. We used a 6th on a rugby player who can't play safety. I'd pick him in Round 5 if we trade down a couple of times. At worst, can prob be a good nickel/dime back. Better than Arrington.

(Yet)

. . . . .

At some positions certain physical traits can be projected a little. So much of safety play is instincts, feel, sense, play recognition. Experience. He has a mountain of work to do before he can be trusted back there.

That said, I look at it this way: if he plays like this for the next three years, he'll have been worth the draft pick they used on him (just as Slater has proven worthy of the pick they used on him). Anything more they get from him is gravy.

He's already second on the team in special teams tackles.

My point isn't to disparage Ebner's special teams play. It's to point out how much "more" valuable Honey Badger could be. Can cover kicks just as well. Oh, and he can return them. Oh, and he can prob play nickel/dime back significantly better. So, if Ebner's worth a 6th. What is Honey Badger worth?

Probably less to BB, I would guess. Ebner has incredible athleticism and work ethic with great intangibles and upside. He's a ST demon who could possibly turn into more. That's worth a 6 to BB. Mathieu is an undersized playmaker with great instincts and poor man coverage skills who has multiple character issues and repeat drug problems. My guess is he won't be on BB's draft board.

Sounds like Hernandez and Spikes. Meyer just never threw any of their problem guys off of the team. Kept them around. Never said he can play cb in the NFL. But, I do know he'd be a better slot player than Ebner will ever be a safety.

Spikes was a 2-time team captain and lauded for his leadership and toughness. His only incident was an eye-gouging episode for which he was suspended half a game (and chose to sit out the entire game as an example). Hardly a question of kicking him off the team. Hernandez reportedly had repeated failed drug tests, but no other character issues, and was reportedly an exemplary on field performer. Mathieu has had repeated violations, been suspended, been kicked out of school, been arrested after going through rehab. He's failed every second chance he's had. He's repeated claimed that he would clean up his act or change, and then fallen short. Why would things be any different when he gets money and the attention that comes with the NFL?

I'm amused at the idea that BB likes high character people. Didn't we just trade for Talib? And Haynesworth. And Ocho.

Where was that idea expressed recently in this thread? I certainly wasn't trying to imply it.

I think that BB is fine taking some guys with character risks. But selectively. I personally doubt that Mathieu will be one of them, and if so, not before the 6th-7th round. I think BB picks and chooses his spots to take risks.

This article says that Spikes, Hernandez and Harvin all failed drug tests at Florida. Spikes has even failed one in the NFL and cost himself 4 games his rookie year. We also wanted to draft Harvin.
