The 2013 Prospect Thread

Wouldn't be surprised if Belichick maneuvers his future draft board to have a chance to get him when he comes out.

You know he already has Bill's interest with the fact that he went to a Military Academy not to mention i'm sure O'Brien probably put in a call to Belichick and told him to watch for him.

The fact that O'Brien and Saban both recruited him tells you something.

yeah that does say something itll be cool to see how well hackenberg does with bill obriens offense mcgloin threw for 3000 so i think hackenberg will do well and im sure obrien was looking for a qb similar to brady in his style and im sure he will give us as much info as possible. Right now i love bridgewater but maybe watching hackenberg will change that.

I don't know about others, but I've been following Jordan longer than probably anyone on this board, and I've consistently said that I would never project him as a full time DE for the Pats, or try to bulk him up and make him one, and that his value isn't primarily as a pass rusher. He's a space player. I don't know how many times I have to say that.

Collins is an intriguing prospect and I have no problem with liking his athleticism, but he's 6' 2.5" so he doesn't have anywhere near Jordan's length (Jordan is probably a full 4" taller, which is significant in coverage), and I don't believe he's been used in nearly as many ways Jordan has, against nearly the same level of competition. Again, I have no problem with liking Collins as a prospect, but I don't see him as the kind of guy who is going to create mismatches the way Jordan will. JMHO.
But here's the problem; Jordan's inability to use his hands makes his length completely useless as a pass rusher. The only reason length is important in terms of rushing the quarterback is being able to dominate with good hand usage. The only advantage of Jordan's length is deflecting passes. But even there, you must keep in mind that a person's wingspan and height are roughly the same. So, after subtracting chest width, an inch difference in height usually means about a 3/8 inch difference in arm length (remember, two arms). Times 4 inches=1 1/2 inches longer. That can be a huge difference in shedding blocks, because if you are facing a guy with a similar arm length that difference may help you control your opponent's body first and shed a block. But in coverage? It's not a big deal at all.

Will be interesting to watch him next year. Didn,'t do a great deal in the Rose Bowl but that might have been down to scheme.

Smart move for Murphy. He's not a finished product at all (converted tight end?), and he's a really good athlete. A strong year will get his name into the day 1 mix.

Skov going back makes less sense to me. I'd think he'd have been a 2nd round pick this year, but with next year's class presumably being more talented (not a hard thing to do), he has to improve his game a lot just to tread water in that 2nd round range.

Just watching The Cotton Bowl and a thought just occurred to me. Chip Kelly + Johnny Manziel = The Perfect Storm.

I'll admit, I struggle to read Oregon uniform numbers, but I don't think I've ever seen him play corner. Plus, once again, he played his best against weak teams.
I read about 10 coaching books every offseason. I don't know as much as Belichick, but I'm as good as anyone on the internet. It's tough to get a feel for certain zone coverage schemes when the camera only shows one side of the field (the side the ball went to), but I have a fairly good understanding of what's going on
With regard to injuries, I try to be humble. I'm arrogant everywhere else.
One thing that also confuses me; are all torn ACL's the same? When we hear about a torn ACL, the only thing we're told is "torn ACL." But I assume some are worse than others, and, even if I was a doctor, I don't know how I could make a prediction with a guy like Lattimore without seeing his particular X-rays. Am I right?
I don't get it
One thing you guys should know about Kyle Long: he plays guard right now for Oregon. I definitely don't think it's a good fit, but, keep in mind, there's a lot of difficulty involved in position changes, and it makes him a project as an NFL tackle.
Junior year? I've watch 3 games this year, haven't seen it.

The force is with you, young Mackenzie, but you are not a Jedi yet.

Hackenberg isn't coming out till 2017.

My binkie sleeper pass rusher is Quanterus Smith out of Western Kentucky. Great length at 6'5. He was leading CFB in sacks before he got injured. Had 3 sacks against Bama against both Fluker and Kouandijo. Watch his tape he is a beast and will be a steal.

Bill should've used 21 on DeCastro, then taken Jones at 25.
Hightower is way too slow for 4-3 OLB, and his effort sometimes is appalling.
Seems to happen every year. There are, however, always a couple of sliders who are there for
the taking in every round, including the early ones. This April, Bill must hit on every one of them;
he has no margin for error due to his lack of multiple picks in any of the first 6 rounds.
Taking Tavon Feckin Wilson at 48 is simply gawd-awful poker-playing at the draft table.
Bill showed his hand way, way, way too early on that one.

I find your lack of faith disturbing.

I love this guy!!

Two posts critical of other posters and offering nothing constructive. Just what the forum needs.

A fair point. Though with respect to the Captain, I'm not sure that much "constructive" has been offered for years.

It's an opinion though and in the words (wrongly) attributed to Voltaire, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"?

I suppose the same applies to Mr Vader although I'm slightly less inclined to meet my Maker on his behalf rather than The Captain's because The Captain is talking about the Patriots rather than other posters. In fact, The Captain doesn't criticise other posters at all that I remember.

Anyways, this is my bug-bear but I'll climb back down off the soapbox now.

Honestly, I disagree. He didn't look anything like the guy who ran a 4.60 pre-ACL surgery. If he continues to rehab and regain his athleticism, the return of the inside linebacker who got 7.5 sacks as a sophomore could get him in the first round in 2014. But, for now, I wouldn't take him in the top 100.

Apparently, the force is with me. I have potential. I am taking the post as a complement. I can't expect to be a Jedi before I've done basic things, such as get a driver's license, right?

I'm not going to get too emotionally invested in any of the DEs in the draft. I'm predicting that BB will look to stock the shelves at other positions as he has generally not used high round draft picks at a single position in back to back years. With the Jones/Bequette/Francis haul of 2012 I highly doubt he drafts another high round DE in 2013. My guess is that the positions at the top of the draft will be interior OL, DT, and WR.

And, I think this is where Hightower ends up. For me, It's DT, OLB and secondary depth. Hoping we re-up Talib. On offense, Cooper if he falls. If not, just wr in Rounds 1-3. Try to pick a developmental OL or two in the 7th.
