The 2013 Prospect Thread

No, but I love watching him pancake people. Sort of like Mike Iupati. Would be nice opening some holes for Ridley. His tackle background is a plus if he look at him as a guard convert, and it looks like he gets out of his stance very quickly with a lot of explosion. Definitely another great find, and a kid to keep a close eye on.

Re-watching him, you're right about him coming out of his stance. The other thing that impresses me is that he keeps nice and low for a man of his size. Tends to lunge a bit but there's stuff to like there.

Personally, I find Williams (and his counterpart, Rambo) both to be very average prospects. Rambo is soft, contact-shy, takes bizarre angles, and is undisciplined in coverage. Williams is a better football player, but doesn't have the range and fluidity to cover well in the NFL. He also is an inconsistent tackler, which is a no-no for a strong safety. Not sure he offers anything that Tavon Wilson doesn't.

i disagree about williams. he has fluid hips and he can cover in the nfl. and hes a very instinctive player and can diagnose

Yup. Really nice find. He jumps to the head of the class as a late round/UDFA sleeper with a lot of upside at guard.

Speaking of which, have you seen anything of JC Tretter of Cornell? 6'4" 305" former QB and TE, smart and athletic. Plays tackle but will probable move inside, possibly even to center. I think he got a Senior Bowl invite.

Michael Silver from Yahoo.com had a nice article yesterday on Seattle CB Richard Sherman, who was one of my binkie's in 2011:

Seahawks' Richard Sherman wants to 'destroy' the NFL and become the best CB of all time - Yahoo! Sports

Sherman has a Brady-esque chip on his shoulders from being passed up in the draft in favor of guys he considered inferior prospects. He obviously considered it a humiliating experience. Like Brady, he's an ultra-competitive and highly driven guy.

Those are the kind of guys you want to find in the draft. Guys not just with superior talent, but with the inner fire and drive, and hopefully a chip on their shoulder driving them to be the best. Rodney had it. Welker has it. Brady is the poster boy for it. Alfonzo Dennard may have a little bit of that. Figuring out who some of those ultra-competitive, ultra-driven guys are and targeting them might be an interesting approach. And if some of those guys slip a bit and get a chip on their shoulder ... watch out.

Anyone have any thoughts as to who some of those guys might be in this draft?

Sherman was one of my binkies last year as well. Really liked him in the Senior Bowl as he silenced quite a few people who said he couldn't play CB in the NFL..

The question that immediately came to mind for me was why did he switch from QB to TE to OT.. Was it just because of his growth? Or was it because he didn't actually have the ability to read defenses to continue to be a QB..

I'm liking this guy, great find.

He's got another important factor going for him.

Just playin', Brother Gilkey, you handsome Devil.

Potential 7th Round/UDFA backup left offensive tackles:

Tanner Hawkinson, OT - Kansas
David Quessenberry, OT - San Jose State

"Diamonds in the rough" so to speak.

I was a Sherman fan too. I believed the only thing he lacked was straight line speed. His speed may have been horrible, all kinds of terrible, just pathetic. Beyond that, close to perfect

I have seen Quessenberry once (I've got more games on my TiVo's). It was mediocre competition, but you absolutely couldn't ask for better play. The only way he could have played better would be if he pancaked opponents on literally every play, as opposed to simply making sure no defender he blocked could make a tackle

Sherman may not have had Patrick Peterson's straight line speed, but he wasn't slow at all. He was a high school All American track athlete in the triple jump (California record 50'8"), broad jump (23'8"), and 100M hurdle (13.99 seconds) with a 100M time of 10.77 seconds. He had an 11" broad jump, 38" vertical and 6.72 3-cone at 6'3" prior to the draft. Every single number was solid EXCEPT his damn 40 time (4.54), and he had a history of plenty of linear speed based on his track experience. He never played slow on the football field.

There's a number of very scouting nuggets of small school guys from JB Scouting in the below thread. JB Scouting is a service that does scouting for some bowl games and all-star games. Seems to specialise in small school stuff. Nothing very detailed but I thought Mayo and others will like what he has to say about Brandon Williams:

Brandon Williams / DT / Missouri Southern- Had a monster year. Best small DT in the draft and best I have seen in a long time. 2nd or 3rd round. Great size, length, and athleticism. Every team who I have talked to about him either loves him or is chomping at the bit to see him based on what myself and the combine said on him. When I say teams have no seen him I'm talking GMs and directors. All the area guys love him. Even attracted a few GMs during the fall.
