The 2013 Prospect Thread

This guy's interesting:

Luke Marquardt, OT, Azusa Pacific

A 6'8-6'10" ( ) former basketball playing OT. Found reference to him in this thread. According to one of the contributors, his OL coach is Jackie Slater. A potential late round UDFA pick for the Patriots? Has the feel of a BB/Dante special.

BTW, it's a worthwhile thread to follow.

So, I finally got to see some tape of Marquadt and I was very impressed:

Skip the first 54 seconds and focus on the LT #77.

In particular, watch the plays at 2:20 and 3:37. They literally made me sit up and take notice. Pretty good athleticism for a guy his size.

John vandenRaadt #10 Highlights The Most Underrated QB in the 2012 Draft Class - YouTube

Good article here on him:

What at first seemed like a temporary gig, has become another transition that Marquardt has embraced. Arriving on campus in 2008 he was 6’10” 230 pounds, he is now 6’10”, 320 pounds and a candidate for the NFL.

“I’ve never seen someone as big as him get such a low pad level,” said Carlton. “It’s why he’s such a great run blocker.”

“He has unbelievable aggression,” says Hall of Famer Jackie Slater, who played 20 years in the NFL for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams and is the Cougars current offensive line coach. “He is technically sound and growing better all the time. He’s going to play a lot of football. One of the reasons is because of the way he uses his ability.

“He has the perfect demeanor of an offensive lineman,” says Slater. “Emotionally he doesn’t get too high or get too low. He has a mental dexterity that’s been the benchmark for his success in overcoming adversity. He loves to hit and he loves to compete.”

When asked about the chances of a D-2 player getting a serious look by the NFL Slater broke it down further.

“Luke has a natural athleticism. Offensive linemen with his height often struggle against explosive defensive ends who play with great leverage. He’s worked on this with his arm range and strength to negate pass rushers. The NFL is drafting bigger offensive linemen now to wall out guys. We have a counter run game and pull our backside tackle, he pulls and makes adjustments and is consistent.”

Latest rumors from Draftinsider:

- It looks as though the 2013 NFL Draft will receive a much needed boost of talent at the running back position. Several sources have confided both Giovani Bernard of North Carolina and Eddie Lacy of Alabama will enter the draft. Bernard grades as the top back on our draft board but sources say there are some medical issues from his past that Bernard must hurdle.
- Word in the draft community is offensive tackle D.J. Fluker of Alabama will also enter the draft.
- We understand Justin Hunter/WR/Tennessee has been researching agents, a sure sign he will enter the draft.
- We hear linebackers Khalil Mack of Buffalo and Kyle Van Noy of BYU will wait to receive grades from the advisory committee before making a final decision on whether or not to enter the draft.
- Van Noy may not be the only BYU underclassman to opt for the draft as we were told receiver Cody Hoffman is seriously entertaining thoughts of leaving for the NFL.
- Bennie Logan/DT/LSU has been stamped as a potential first round pick by area scouts we spoke with. Word is he’s likely to enter the draft.
- Several sources have told us Tony Jefferson of Oklahoma and Matt Elam from Florida are both expected to enter the draft, which would add talent to a safety class NFL scouts already like.

NFL Draft Insider News & Notes: 5.0

Van Noy and Hoffman are both good players.

Ansah at #11?

Don't be surprised if he goes higher. I won't be.

Personally, I don't worry too much about where he or other guys will go. The Pats will no doubt miss out on some good prospects, as they do every year. But there will be tons of talent available within reach, no matter what. I remember feeling terribly disappointed that guys like Aaron Curry and Rolando McClain were way out of reach, and they haven't set the world on fire.

Must remember not to go on the main board anymore. Unless you're prepared to be an all out sycophant for the Patriots, you're not welcome over there. Rational thinking does not apply.

at least there's some semblance of detachment in talking about draft picks.

There really is a witch hunt in the main forum.

I usually only come into the Draft Talk section anyway

This is about binkies d%#*!@t

I'm going to go on record that Ansah is going to be a force in the league, as soon as I saw film on him I knew he'd be great, and I knew about him and endorsed him before he really caught on.

This isn't about logic, it's about binkies!

I want him, too. But if he goes earlier, he goes earlier.

We missed out on JJ Watt. How great would he have been. But we got Nate Solder. And how great he's becoming for us.

But I understand binkylust quite well. I'm just suppressing it.

Binkielust cannot be supressed, if you try it just rebounds back twice as fierce

It can only be transferred, perhaps if I got some tape of Louis Nix I could throw some his way

Does anyone have any links to tape of Nick Kasa? He's a fascinating prospect based on his physicality but I can't see him play.

I think he plays with that Rodney-esque chip on his shoulders.

Michael Silver from Yahoo.com had a nice article yesterday on Seattle CB Richard Sherman, who was one of my binkie's in 2011:

Seahawks' Richard Sherman wants to 'destroy' the NFL and become the best CB of all time - Yahoo! Sports

Sherman has a Brady-esque chip on his shoulders from being passed up in the draft in favor of guys he considered inferior prospects. He obviously considered it a humiliating experience. Like Brady, he's an ultra-competitive and highly driven guy.

Those are the kind of guys you want to find in the draft. Guys not just with superior talent, but with the inner fire and drive, and hopefully a chip on their shoulder driving them to be the best. Rodney had it. Welker has it. Brady is the poster boy for it. Alfonzo Dennard may have a little bit of that. Figuring out who some of those ultra-competitive, ultra-driven guys are and targeting them might be an interesting approach. And if some of those guys slip a bit and get a chip on their shoulder ... watch out.

Anyone have any thoughts as to who some of those guys might be in this draft?

John Simon. Because I think he'll fall. He's already got that character drive so think of his fall being a top up to an already driven character.

Jarvis Jones. Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he falls to the bottom of the first or even into the 2nd round (Spinal Stenosis).

I hope he accepts:

The Senior Bowl has also extended an invitation to Ohio State right tackle Reid Fragel, though Fragel has not yet committed to the game.

Fragel played in 39 games at tight end, making nine starts, in his first three college seasons before starting all 12 games at right tackle last season. The 2012 Ohio State roster listed Fragel at 6'8, 310.

"When I was at Ohio State in September to watch practice, (Fragel's) talent was obvious," Savage said. "He has a long way to go, and it's too early to tell how he'll fit in this draft with guys who have been playing the position for so long, but he's certainly an intriguing project.

"He has the athleticism. It will be interesting to see how he holds the weight he added to play tackle. There's a possibility teams will look at him at left tackle because of his athleticism."

John Simon has accepted an invite to the Senior Bowl.

I wouldn't say that there's a big witch hunt, or calls for a purity test.

That said, we have, in the past, had more than a few posters who seemingly cannot find anything positive to say about the Patriots. For example, I know one poster whose recurring theme was that Brady had "gotten soft" or somesuch and that the Patriots should trade him before it's too late.

And then, of course, there's the return of NEM. . . .

Yes, absolutely. Rodgers has it too. I've been thinking about this idea for a while now, since I saw Brady 6. I only applied it to quarterbacks, but applying the idea to other positions is a good idea. I'm not surprised it came from you, Mayo.

Anyone have any thoughts as to who some of those guys might be in this draft?

That's hard to figure out, especially only at this stage and without the resources of NFL teams. Perhaps you could find former top prospects that haven fallen. That could cause a "chip" but it wouldn't necessitate the ultra competitiveness or drive.

Matt Elam is my binky this year. He plays like a crazy SOB. Even drilled a couple of teammates to celebrate at times. He played a dominant game vs LSU. Check the 2nd play.
Hear he's going back for his senior year. l

2012 Florida Gators vs LSU Highlights (Dirty) - YouTube

Elam is a beast. I referenced that very play 2 months ago.

Now I only scouted him vs LSU last Sat, but he was easily the best player there that day. I only had two criticisms. One he's shorter than ideal at 5'10", and two he was so energetic and physical that hurt his teammates in celebrations.

Has anybody watched film of Ra'Shede Hageman vs UNLV and seen him play in more recent games too? I'm wondering how much improvement he showed between the two games.
