Gronk: arm injury

A lot of mediots will likely agree with you today. Not so much coaches.

Rob Gronkowski, Andrew Luck, Andre Johnson, more NFL Week 11 thoughts - Peter King - SI.com

As to Peter's concerns about starters playing in blowouts I'd just remind him that you cannot replace everybody and Belichick builds his team on the premise that there are no stars, just football players. And on a team that has had a maddening tendancy to sputter on one side of the ball or the other if not both late in games, insuring they can all retain focus and play 60 minutes over rides risk of injury. If Bill started sitting regulars to plan for games we have yet to secure a right to play in and this team started folding like a house of cards lucky to eek out wins...the same fans and mediots would be tearing him a new one just for a different reason. And I could just hear the shrieks now were Mallett to be inserted into a 3 score game only to make poor throw/decision that resulted in a key WR or TE getting concussed or worse...

A couple things. You're quoting a "mediot" positively (in part) here, so I'd suggest that collectively the board drops that phrase--there's idiots here, there's idiots in the media, there's idiot coaches, etc. Better to take them individiually.

On your last point, I wouldn't want Mallett in there throwing in a 3 score game, unless there was only a minute left or something (and even then, he should just be handing off, so never mind.)

On Gronkowski, Dungy agreeing, you've only got so many players, blah blah blah. I get all that. Really. But bottom line, if he wasn't out there, he doesn't break his arm on that play. He's one of the most important players they have. Just sit him down.

I'm confident the Pats will weather the storm, and being an optimisitic guy, I'll take the view that he's getting rest now, other injuries can heal, etc. But on balance, I'd prefer he didn't break his arm. And if we could go into a time machine to before that play, let me know if you still leave him out there.

I just read 39 pages hoping--in vain--for some real information.

Right, because had this extra point failed, we surely would have lost this game....

right.... makes sense now.

I believe he was speaking in general, and not specifically to that one play...

And as others have mentioned, rarely are players who are part of the PAT team removed due to a lopsided score.

Don't feel that all is lost! It's "real information" to me that anyone actually reads "39 pages," so, cheer up, your efforts were not in vain. :singing:

out of pure ignorance, what happens to screws/plates inserted to help the bone heal faster? do they stay in forever or do they get taken out later?

If it's like the screws they put in for my ACL, they stay in..

(BTW and not to hijack the thread to another topic, but injuries like these are what make me completely sympathetic to players who hold out or negotiate to get the best possible contract when they are healthy; booing #4 yesterday was classless...I count two Lombardis that we might not have without his leg.)

Too bad that Vinatieri didn't think so. In fact, he said "That's what they are supposed to do".

You don't pull every starter. You do pull your key players in a blowout especially when you have to turn around and play 4 days later.
This notion that Gronk could not be replaced on the PAT team is laughable.
Guess they're going to have to replace him now eh??

What makes Gronk's injury even worse is that Hernandez can't be counted on. Aaron will be hampered with that ankle for the rest of the year.

You are amusing.

Close as we will get per Schefter:

November 19, 2012atriots TE Rob Gronkowski underwent surgery this am. Team uncertain exactly how long he will be out, but one source said he expects Gronkowski to miss "probably a few weeks."

Gresh and Zo are on now and Zo thinks there is a shot at 3 weeks (which due to scheduling would be 2 games) or back after Miami.

and Vinnie Testaverde the year 1999? the Jets were on a tear with a decent team blows out his achillies untouched. You-know-what happens.

I know! I know! Call on me! Call on me!

What happened:

The Jets sucked that year.

They sucked so badly that Parcells got fed up and moved to the Front Office.

Belichick was so freaked out at the prospect of becoming HC for that **** show with Woody Johnson as owner and with Bill Parcells breathing down his neck as GM that he resigned after one day as "HC of the NYJ"...

...and the rest is history.

Went back a few pages and didn't see this mentioned, but Gronk had been sitting before the PAT:

As far as the play where the injury occurred, it was the final extra point. Colts cornerback Marshay Green rushed inside Gronkowski, and then his arm crumpled a little awkwardly. Gronkowski had been on the bench for that series but re-entered for the extra point. I don’t have a problem with that. Your field goal unit is your field goal unit. Could they have subbed him out for anybody? Yes, but it is what it is.

Albert Breer?@AlbertBreer

As @ProFootballTalk reported a minute ago, I've been told Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski already went thru surgery, will be out a few weeks.

Or the time Welker tore his ACL running a pass route, without contact?

Welker, Brady, and all the other important starters should have never been playing in that game in 2009. Our playoff position was wrapped up and the starters had nothing to gain out of that game.

As for Gronk being in yesterday, people need to understand that starters are never usually pulled on the PAT team, even in a blow out. That some here are having trouble with that notion is funny. This was an unfortunate, freak injury.

I'll go with that prediction. No more than three weeks. Though they should not rush him back until he's fully ready.

I am pretty sure that there is a greater risk of injury on a TD celebration then there is blocking on a PAT attempt. Its obvious that these people are just angry and looking for someone to blame.

I don't think people are having any "trouble with that notion." The fact that something is "usually" done doesn't make it smart.

Gronkowski broke his arm on the play, and will be out for weeks. Hilarious.

Quick! Name the last time an injury happened on the PAT team. Go!

It's been mentioned a couple of times but half the folks here don't read the threads they post in and the other half don't care once they've staked out their position.

Hah --guess I fall into the former category.

Well, it's frustrating when players get injured, but I always go back to that old saying: A ship is safe in harbor - but that's not what ships are for.
