He wasn't a great offensive co-ordinator. Period. I'd go as far as to say he was a MEDIOCRE OC. I mean I know our forums can get a little bombastic, but nearly everyy week you would see dozens of people saying how ***** he was... and there was def a fair amount of truth to a lot of those claims.

yeah, I can't believe a school that's banned from bowls for four years, lost $60m and all recruiting power didn't attract better candidates. A better question is why did he accept?

well he made a common mistake which was to take the first job offered to him. If he had coached through this year with lets says the first or second best offense in the NFL, he would have gotten better offers next year than PSU this year. The money will always be there - there is no reason to think coaching salaries aren't going anywhere but up - so bide your time.

yeah I mean that's probably why, but unless BB told him McD was replacing him I have to believe he'd end up with more money and a more prestigious position somewhere in the next 2-3 years. People say he's got nothing to lose but what job is he going to get if PSU is a 3 win team for the next 4 years? He's almost going to have to start over again...

Like where? Death Penalty or not, HC of PSU is still one of the most prestigious jobs in the country. Granted a veteran HC with a track record like Urban Meyer would never take that job, but which marquise program that plays regularly on National TV was going to hire BOB?
WE know BOB because of our infatuation of all things Patriots…but to the rest of America, they probably couldn't tell BOB from Bill O'Brien. This is a guy that was basically unknown outside of New England until he had a sideline spat with Tom Brady?
Don't get me wrong, I like BOB and feel this is a great job for him (no where to go but up) and hope he succeeds; but I also felt that way about Charlie Weis so maybe I should not become an AD or GM.

Even after the defections, PSU has more highly rated talent than most of the teams it will play this year. If they don't do well, it isn't about talent.

It wasn't just because of the transgressions of one man and the negligence of others now was it PittPatriot? It was the systematic cover up of a heinous sexual predator against children by those in positions of power over "bad PR". IMO PSU got off lightly. If it were up to me PSU would and should have been hammered harder than SMU.

I sympathise with BOB and the football team but not the institution.

I do not believe it was a "systematic cover up" - I think it was a bunch of busy good 'ol boys who had too many other important things to worry about, hence brushing it aside. I think they should pay for that. But I also feel there is so much blame that needs to be handed out on so many levels, that I do not choose to hold ONLY those in power (deep pockets) responsible. I understand if you feel differently as this is an emotionally charged issue like no other and I may carry some bias as I am from PA (not a PSU fan, though) and a close family friend is the defense attorney for one of the lead defendants in the perjury case.

There isn't a faster track to an NFL HCing job that Pats OC. Prestigious or not nobody in the NFL or anywhere else is going to know what they have in BOB 4 years from now unless he pulls off a miracle.

That pretty well defines the thin line between "being busy and distracted" and "abandoning your most important duties for personal gain" that will define much of these cases.

He has a 10 year contract, not a 4 year contract.

People should relax, it's his first game. That defense he has is not suited to the strategy. If anything, his coaching error was to go with an attack style D that is so popular in college. But PSU's defenders are big plodders of the Devon Still/Navorro Bowman type. Hodges and Mauti are not blitz-type attackers. The big guys in the middle are there to pressure the pocket. Yet the D-Co. is playing ultra aggressive D. It's just wrong for the team.

The offensive side of the ball looked really good the first half (despite 2 huge turnovers after long drives). The defense looked awful.

When I read most of the stuff on PSU in the media and from fans, it's clear they are operating on a limited set of facts. If you really want to decied on the culpability for not reporting to police, all you need to do is to look at the last several pages of the Freeh report. Most haven't read it. Not even journalists. Most have only read the newspaper reports based on the early leaks of the emails between the 4 men who decided what to do. Those leaks were released strategically to take the pressure off of politicians and the BOT who were informed about the case well before the grand jury (indeed, Sandusky was outed as a deranged molester back in 2008!).

If you read the Freeh report, you see in evidence handwritten plans in response to the shower molestation that predate the email from Curley by 3 entire weeks. Which begs the question: why was the email released to make it seem as though the plan was hatched on the 28th of Feb. 2001, when it was already designed by attorneys back on Feb. 10th?

Furthermore, the NCAA in its rush to judgment went ahead and added a year of postseason bans, penalties, and fines based on the Freeh report's claim that PSU knew about Sandusky way back in 1998 and did nothing. They even removed wins from that period. It's ironic because Sandusky was investigated and reported to police back in 1998--PSU did what people are clamoring about now. Yet the Freeh report cited a Curley email in which he said Paterno sought an update on where they were with the Sandusky case. This seemed to be a huge lie in which Paterno absolutely knew about 1998. Two days after the NCAA sanctioned PSU, Freeh amended the report to state that this Curley email actually was from 2001 and was incorrectly listed as 1998 in the report. It was this email upon which the NCAA decided to sanction the program all the way back to 1998.

If they got dealt heavier sanctions such as the death penalty those very same people (as well as the locals and a key part of their economy) that you 'sympathise' with would have been hurt tge most.

The three or four people who covered this up will pay tge ultimate price for their crime. What's suspending the program going to do? No good at all.

iirc he had a clause in that his contract couldn't be terminated within 4 years in the event of the sanctions that eventually came down.
