While it's an important subject and football certainly takes a toll on the body, that's not what the article is about. It's about the toll of steroids and HGH.

What the league needs is a valid test for HGH to keep players from taking it, and they need to disallow postseason awards to any player suspended for drug abuse. The NFLPA should be the first group advocating longer suspensions and disallowing awards, to protect their own membership.

OTOH, football takes a huge toll on the body, most of all through all the accumulated concussions. That's a subject they don't write about nearly enough.

As usual, I am in complete agreement with you, PF37 -- great points. The fact that the NFLPA resists tougher drug testing makes me angry and sick.

Belichick has said the game takes a very heavy physical toll on Defensive lineman in particular. OL is probably next. All lineman for the Pat's are relatively young compared to some of the Pat's LB's who are fairly old. There's obviously a reason for that. Seymour is already slowed up after playing very strongly around week 12. I'm not sure if it's some lingering injury or the game is wearing him out, but we will see more on that against the Colts.

Fortunately the Players Association seems to be carefully considering the physical toll on retired players, and they seem to sponsor quite a lot of research as well. There are new improved helmets for example and this new artificial playing surface installed. The Players Association will push for older artificial surfaces to be replaced.

While specifically on the HDH and steroids, I was seeing it in the way that if they were not playing professional football, they would not of been exposed to these issues. Its the football, and its associated toll on the body that causes the player to look for relief.
