Anyone else a little nervous right now?

I'm just repeating what Mike and Mike reported this morning. If 5 of 8 teams are eliminated, the remaining 3 teams (until they play each other) have a 33% chance of taking home the Lombardi.

And that's where you went wrong my friend.

Mike and Mike have about as much brains as a duo as Mike Tyson and Michael Jackson.

Hehe, I watch Mike and Mike pretty much every day (when I making breakfasts and lunches for my 3 kids) but I view it as a sort of comedy program staring two clowns named Mike & Mike.

However, when Greenberg rattled off those stats Friday morning, I was like: "Huh? That's interesting."

My own view is that the playoffs are all about sustained momentum and limiting turnovers. Denver's 3 losses to finish out the season were all related to losing the turnover battle, but luckily we had a big enough lead over Oakland that we held on and "backed into the playoffs". Well, in the playoffs, that's not good enough.

Fox's formula for winning (and I don't necessarily agree with all of it) is this:
  • run the ball most of the time
  • do not throw on 1st down
  • do not throw into coverage
  • throw the ball into the ground unless your guy is open
  • control the clock with running plays
  • never go for it on 4th and short
  • punt the ball a lot
  • always play for field position
  • play a solid defense, but rely on the line to get pressure rather than use lots of blitzes

This is not, IMO, a balanced team. It's a very one dimensional team, and I think it fails to really take full advantage of Tebow's unique skills. However, it has worked (just barely) so far (with 5 overtime victories this year!), so I doubt Fox is going to change anything for this game.

But Denver's Defense is clearly superior to New England's Defense. Our Defense has kept most games close; and when this wasn't the case, it was usually because the Offense or Special Teams stupidly turned the ball over deep in our own territory.

The problem I see is this--(and I am not taking DEN lightly at all as a fan):

New England was caught off guard a bit in the first matchup, not to mention the fact that they don't normally do very well (at all) in Mile High stadium, or even vs the Broncos alone in the past.

On top of that, they were missing Branch, Chung, Vollmer and Spikes. Those are 4 pretty important players who can make a big difference.

Since it's their 2nd meeting, I believe they may be a bit more prepared this time around, and they are certainly more healthy. Then there's the much better play in Gillette stadium too. They just barely blew a very huge streak of consecutive wins at home to the NYG on a last min drive (although it was regular season of course, but the fact remains the same, they are much better at home).

There's also the fact that no .500 team has ever made it further than the divisional round in the history of the NFL--ever.

Then there's the unlikelihood that NE would lose 3 straight home playoff games after not losing one for what? 30 yrs?

There's also the fact that DEN in 3-8 all time on the road in the playoffs.

If you want to delve even deeper, there's also the fact that once NE beat you, DEN went into a huge tailspin only to be rescued by the ineptness of the Pittsburgh Steelers putting 9 guys in the box and leaving NO SAFETY help for a CB who has been known to get smoked a lot.

To that point, PIT had held DEN to 3 points in the second half once they adjusted.

I think it may have been the ridiculous coverage schemes of the Steelers, who were willing to gamble that Tebow wouldn't hit a 15 yd out route. Once that happened, Thomas was gone, as he made good use of his stiff arm and speed on pathetic Ike Taylor.

When you consider that was THE only good thing that happened to them in the last month, I am not sure why everyone's so worried that Tebow is going to pick apart a NE defense on the road, especially since we'll be playing much better schemes than PIT did.

I think the game may be very close in the 1st half, but after the adjustments are made at halftime, there really should not be much threat to winning by at least 10 points.

Next Sunday vs BAL may be a totally different story altogether, as I'm not quite convinced that the 2011 Pats team can win that game to go to the SB, let alone beat one of the tough NFC teams. Then again, I do feel that they have just as good a chance as anyone else, and they would be favored to beat Baltimore at home too.

But Denver's Defense is clearly superior to New England's Defense.

How?

By what superficial ranking? It's pts allowed that is important.

Denver averaged giving up 24.4 pts a game (24th in the NFL).

That worse than NE, especially NE at home.

On top of that, DEN had a 25th ranked offense.

---------

So you consider a 24th ranked defense, and a 25th ranked offense to be so tremendously capable of going on the road and becoming the first team in NFL history to finish .500 or worse and win in the divisional round?

All because they were able to keep some games close (many at home), against teams with sub-par quality?

They went into a huge dramatic tailspin at the end of the yr, losing what? 4 out of 5 games in a row?

Due to the ridiculous and semi-brainless defensive scheme of the Pittsburgh Steelers, we're now supposed to worry about them? And even worse, they are somehow "God's team" all over again?

Didn't we put an end to this nonsense once already this yr?

Again...you are posting superficial stats.

Apparently, these don't mean all that much when 3 out of the last 4 teams in "yardage allowed" (a skewed stat for teams who play with leads) are the top 3 teams in the NFL.

POINTS are what matters.

Well, he said by "keeping it close". Of course in many games the Pat's D didn't "keep it close" because the NE offense put a lot of daylight between our scores and the opponent's.
In the Patriot's three losses we lost by a combined 15 points. Denver lost by more than that in just the NE game at Mile High alone.

This has all the makings of a major upset--the Broncos see themselves as a team of destiny and the Pats must be doubting themselves a bit after after being shocked in the first round the last two years.

I hate playing teams we beat in the regular season a second time around in the playoffs: see Giants, Ravens, and Jets. This game follows that pattern to T--media circus, Pats heavy favorites, etc. The more I think about it i wish we drawn anyone but the Broncos, even though I think they and Tebow suck overall. They are riding a ton of momentum right now. I'd honestly like our chance more against the Steelers, Ravens, or Texans, who we might take more seriously

But in BB and Brady I trust--the gameplan and QB play is extra crucial because the Broncos, player for player, are as talented as the Pats.

There's also the fact that no .500 team has ever made it further than the divisional round in the history of the NFL--ever.

I did not know that. Damn it! And now I'm going to conveniently forget that stat.

"Move along. These are not the droids you are you looking for."

Well, in your defense, I am assuming that there haven't been all that many .500 teams to go by--so it may be just another worthless stat in the big picture of things.

I enjoyed talking some good football with you dude.

It's getting near daylight on the E.Coast though. I'm going to turn in.

Good luck to your team...next yr ;)

I enjoyed the back and forth, too.

And thanks for wishing us luck, too. We'll need it when we try to decide how to make the best use of our 32nd pick in the first round! :rocker:

They give up more points, but like you said they don't have Brady scoring 32 ppg to make their job easier. On the other hand Denver runs the ball well and that helps a D, but one thing for sure is that in a passing league, 21 sacks by Dumervil and Miller + Champ Bailey is better than what we have with McCourty struggling and Carter out.

Nah! Not At All! Just want this game started & overwith already. Tired of hearin all this Tebow saving our universe BS! With Pats being eliminated home last 2 years Brady is fired up waitin for tonite since that Jet loss.
PILE IT ON!!!

I'm nervous, especially after what happened last year.

There are genuinely people out there that don't get nervous before games? I'm nervous before every single game.

7am here in Arizona on gameday and I'm still not nervous. EXCITED!!!

Hell yes I'm nervous. Always nervous before a playoff game. Having nightmares of the Patriots repeatedly turning the ball over and Tebow doing some crazyness to pull it out.
