Playoff seedings

I would not be able to tolerate losing to the Steelers twice...I can't even comprehend it!

I think seeding is a tad overrated. This Patriots team has proven this year that they can win on the road in hostile environments (e.g. Denver today) with playoff-type ambiance.

Furthermore, it is not like home-field advantage throughout bespeaks a trip to the Super Bowl. We all know how well that played out last season.

Home or away, this team will advance only as far as how well their play/execution in all three phases on that day takes them.

If the current score holds up and the Ravens lose tonight, the bottom line is that the Pats, if they win their Division Game at home, are probably going to have to beat Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, a hallmark of their "dynasty" run in the last decade. I don't see the Steelers losing down the stretch given the sour taste remaining from last year's SB.

And, lets face it, if we did end up 0--2 against the Steelers, we could at least console ourselves that they beat us twice, head to head, and not have anything about which to complain.
Yeah, I'd feel really consoled if they beat us again and the remainder of my winter, plus my spring and summer would be full of contentment knowing we lost twice to Pissburgh. I'd rest easily and be happy that the better team won. Sorry, I'm a much sorer loser than that.

Things could get very simple if San Francisco beats Pittsburgh Monday Night.

Agreed. But I just don't see it happening. I think Big Ben will get injected with the maximum hit of painkiller allowed by the NFL and just "will" the Steelers to victory tomorrow night. Hope I'm wrong, but with the Ravens losing they can taste the Number One seed.

I don't think I said anything about being "happy" about that outcome, just that its implication would be pretty clear.

As for being a "sore loser," well that's your decision. Personally, as I get older, I find that wasting energy on negative feelings like that just isn't worth it.

hey...there's no room to be a sore loser on THIS site....you'll get crowded out entirely by the sore winners

So everything fell in place

Patriots stopped the Denver Tebows and won convincingly...AFC EAST CHAMPS
The Jets got destroyed
The Ravens lost
The Texans lost
and for those who have some Mercury Morris syndrome...the Packers lost too.

Good day, good day

Re: So everything fell in place

It def was a GREAT day for the Pats..The experts can say what they want, but it is what it is...

Good day, good day

If Steelers lose tomorrow, this will rank as one of the best weekends in terms of competition losing that I can remember. I usually hate watching non Pats games because the team I'm rooting for always loses.

Oh and Oakland lost making our 2nd rd pick hopefully a little better. A fine day that the 49ers can put the cherry on top of tomorrow night.

Re: So everything fell in place

not yet..still need pitt to lose

Baltimore is going down in flames IN San Diego. This will make Baltimore 3-4 on the road while perfect at home. It appears playing Baltimore in Foxboro has an added advantage as it appears Balt is a lesser than normal road team. So if we don't get the #1 seed, it is probably a good thing that Pitt gets it over Balt.

The difference between the #1 and #2 seeds for the Patriots using the "likely winner" scenario: As the #1, the Patriots likely end up playing Baltimore then Pitt both in Foxboro. As the #2 the Patriots likely play Houston in Foxboro then Pitt in Pitt.
There's an argument to me made that the #2 seed will be the better scenario.

I got news for ya'...if you tried to even talk seedings on this board last month you would have been buried in an avalanche of "bad this...bad that...worst team in history....(insert any NFL team) is going to kill us this week..BB must go, he's lost touch...BB doesn't have it,BB should be fired for fielding this team...blah blah crying whining blah blah blah.."...myself, I take whatever I get in life and make the best of it...6th seed, 1st seed, bird seed...I don't give a crap...all I know is our team is IN, our coach has proven he can win and I like our chances to do some damage...who knows what's in store?...I'll tell you this, there isn't ONE so called "expert" on this board who knows either.

I don't see any argument that makes playing at Pitt better than at home.
Even with a rookie QB Houston looks like a better team than Baltimore.

I know this is about the Pats but i was playing with the ESPN playoff machine and found out that it is possible for the entire AFC west to go 8-8 and if that happens the Chiefs get the 4 seed

That's a straight to the point way to put it and on second thought I agree. There isn't a scenario where playing Pitt in Pitt is a good thing.

I looked at Balt's wins and losses......they simply have not been formidable on the road. Except for the win in Pitt, they have not beaten a quality road opponent. They haven't even beat a decently mediocre opponent on the road (be interesting to see if Cincy at Cincy can beat them). I agree the #1 is what we want. However, since I think we will likely be the #2, the good news is Balt swept Pitt this year. That makes it a more promising possibility that Balt knocks off Pitt and the #2 seed Patriots still get the Conference round game at home.

Obviously there are a lot of variables and possibilities.....and this is just having a little fun speaking of the possibilities for the Patriots.

At this time (Monday 12-19 a.m.), Denver and the Jets are still in the playoffs due to the incompetence of AFC West teams and the Patriots are the top seed.

If the Steelers (without Ben Roethlisberger) lose tonight at San Francisco - a very real possibility - the Pats once again control their destiny to be the #1 seed.

The Jets are the worst team among the six playoff teams in the AFC this morning on both offense and defense. They luck out and get the QB-challenged Texans if the playoffs started today (how do the Jets catch these breaks?).

Roethlisberger's ankle injury is a huge factor in these playoffs. He takes a beating as it is, but make it so he can't play or can't run out of the pocket and the Steelers become more like the Ravens. The only elite offense left in the AFC is the Patriots'.

If Chung, Spikes, Vollmer and Deion Branch could get back by mid-January, these Patriots could be formidable.
