Patriots officially a top 10 Defense!

I said "the rabbit eats lettuce"...LMAO...best line in history

You make a poor argument based on the available data. Remove the KC game and over the last 6 games -- a 6 game snapshot is a fair sample -- the Patriot defense is averaging just about 20 PPG (6 games/121 points allowed). That puts them where? Huh, that would put them right around a ranking of #10.

But I agree a single snapshot can be misleading. You are averaging 100% bad posting in your last 1 post but that could be misleading. Listen, sorry for the jab but you are being too hysterical over a stat that is unarguably the most important stat. However, if you are ultimately trying to say you are concerned about the Patriot defense, there are few objective fans who would disagree. Fortunately there is some evidence that improvement is occurring. Exactly what is wrong with taking that evidence and looking at it optimistically?

he is what he is.

In all seriousness, you're absolutely right. A perennial contender in the NFL is a coach and coaching staff that takes the pieces of his team and places them in an optimum position to win. The Patriots over the BB years have routinely beaten teams that had more talent. However, this year, if they make a serious run at the SB, will be the crowned jewel of BB's coaching performance.

I still have a hard time with the equation that equals a serious championship run -- with this secondary -- but it will be supremely grand if it does happen.

Arrington is playing well and the combination of Carter and Anderson are creating somewhat of a consistent pass rush (in obvious passing situations where Anderson can be inserted, of course). This defense needs McCourty to get healthy and keep improving. The combo of McCourty and Arrington healthy plus a pass rush and, as has been said, great coaching would really go a long way to improving the defense over what it was at the beginning of the season. Right now, the Pats are in a golden position. They sit at the top of the AFC with the softest part of their schedule within shooting distance after the Eagles game with a chance to get their starters healthy and experienced for the playoffs.

Unsurprisingly, given the way the schedule has been laid out, we are repeating the same patterns as last year. The defense sucks but, after being exposed for the lousy defense that it is, it faces crap competition and competition that is struggling when it meets the Patriots, and people begin to overrate the defense.

Hopefully, the end of the pattern is not repeated. Hell, for that matter, hopefully the end of the pattern isn't repeated with the offense, either.

I agree that the defense is still giving up way too many yards and T.O.P. and that the level of competition is going to mask that over the rest of the season, but I actually think that the soft schedule is a good thing. Gives some of the newcomers a chance to get used to the system even more and gives those injured in the LB corps and secondary a chance to get better without the Pats having to worry too much about losing the top seed and the AFC East.

hate to be a downer but I'm not completely sold on the defense just yet...

As well you shouldn't be. The real moment of truth will come in the playoffs. As for now, just enjoy the season.

Aaron Rodgers would destroy this defense in the Super Bowl. Pats better hope the Pack don't make it there

And Tom F'ing Brady would destroy the Packs defense.

It'll be a shootout for the ages. (final score like 13-10 )

Let's not jump the gun here, the competition will get easier so our stats will improve but there is lots of fixing to do.

The Patriots can only play the teams on their schedule, just like everybody else. There are some good offenses and special teams in the coming weeks, especially the one coming up.

While the Philadelphia Eagles are in turmoil, it is not unlikely they will score points in a hurry against the Patriots and freak us all out. The Eagles may have gotten better with Vince Young under center with all those weapons.

The Eagles average 24 points per game and it would be an accomplishment for the Patriots with Julian Edelman at CB and Ross Ventrone at Safety to hold them to 24 at Philadelphia.

This is pretty funny considering the packers defense isn't that great. Rodgers hides a lot of it with the numbers he puts up.

Tampa put 400+ on them Sunday.

Yards is a garbage stat yea, but that was a pretty tight game the whole time. there was no "comeback".

I would suggest TFB feels the same way about the Packers secondary

Unbelievable. Two weeks off the "worst defense in the league" threads based on yards (because we all play fantasy football or something??? IDK...) We're now "officially a top 10 Defense" based on points allowed. Now, since games are, in fact, decided by who scores the most points, at least the stat's slightly more relevant. But this week we beat a team without its starting running back and quarterback. Come on guys.

I loved watching them put together two "statement" games in a row, so to speak -- high octane performances full of the big defensive plays that can make it actually FUN to watch the game when the other guy has the ball.

Now -- do you go on an interception binge against Rivers or Rothlisburger or Rogers? You think sacks will keep coming that easy come playoff time?

Hell, right now I'm watching to see if we can keep playing at a high level even against the remaining soft regular season schedule. And BTW, while we're on the topic, you may have noticed we can afford zero more injuries in our secondary. I'm pretty sure I'm on the depth chart at safety at this point, and I'm pushing 50.

You're never as good as the highs or as bad as the lows... fans always think you are, but you're not.

This is a team that's outperformed expectations for a couple of games. So did Trung Canidate. Who? Yeah.

I'm just excited that we have an Elephant again. Carter was lining up all over the place. Hand on the ground, standing upright. BB has toys that he's just starting to play with. Mayo is also back where he belongs.

The defense actually had a pretty good hold on the game once the Chiefs knocked off the shenanigans. This defense isn't pretty, but we can (and have been) rely on them.

Ditto!

Funny how people always talk about the 32nd ranked defense in yards but never speak about the Packer's 31st ranked defense.

If I cherry pick stats I can make anyone look good.

I'm not trying to discredit the team. But it's not a top 10 defense.

Its not cherry picking, it is ranking them based on the most important criteria.
Do you think the 11th-32nd defenses would rather allow fewer points or is that misleading?

Getting Shaun Ellis out of DE rotation has helped the pass rush immeasurably. Deaderick plays the run well and M. Anderson(Who many have been calling for more PT all year) are a nice combo at LDE. I'd like to get a 3rd DT to rotate in there. G. Warren not playing much and Brace has been invisible. Maybe, Ellis can help there until Brace gets in shape.

Spikes and Fletcher returns will help the lb corps. Especially vs the run.

Chung and McCourty seem close to returning. Another upturn for the defense.

The defense is trending in the right direction and will be getting some additions. Don't know if it's championship caliber. But, nothing like the one that started the season. I think we're a a good FS away from having a good defense. We misplay so many balls in the air, and take poor tackling angles. Ihedigbo's effort(Or whatever you call that) on the Thomas Jones run to the 5 in the 1st quarter was reminiscent of Meriweather.

The Patriots defense has been getting pummeled by the good offenses, and it's been getting moved on almost at will by the bad offenses until they hit the red zone. Stop kidding yourself about that group. It doesn't make games more enjoyable, and it doesn't impact the team in any way at all.

The good thing we're seeing with the defense is that the red zone play has been much better than last year. How much of that is genuinely improved play, and how much of that is just the odds working themselves out, could go a long way to determining the kind of chance this team has in the playoffs.

Douche

The one thing I admire about you is that you never waste a chance to be stupid. Actually, you continually top yourself.

Where exactly is all this pummeling? Outside of your intellect, that is?

I think the soft schedule is great, if it allows players like Brady to get healthy and the secondary a chance to improve both health-wise and play-wise.

Looking at the stats NE is dominating the stats in a lot of categories, even when you have a 9-1 and 10-0 team.

Still a lot of it seems flukish. After this 6 game stretch we will be a 12-13 win powerhouse top 3 in scoring, yardage, turnovers etc. but its obviously not the important thing for our season, all we need is health and maybe a good matchup in round one.
